Unfortounately a law suit does not effect officers in their individual capacity, you can sue the county but not the officer. The worst he would get is a few paid days off. Abolishing qualified immunity nationwide is the only way we will see real change, until that happens incidents like this will continue to become all too common.

When the Officer acts outside the written scope of his/her authority (when they do or say things that are not allowed), then they lose ‘qualified immunity’, and you can sue the cop in his/her personal capacity, after you win the case against him/her for violating your rights, if they ticket you and drag you into a court case!

Send A Letter to the Supreme Court. There are multiple pathways to end qualified immunity. The Supreme Court can revisit the doctrine and abolish or limit it. Congressional legislation can also abolish qualified immunity, as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act aimed to do before it stalled in the U.S. Senate.
