I'm 43 minutes into this video and here's my comment so far: I'm a retired submarine captain, a nuclear engineer, a writer and speaker; I stood in the top 10% of my class at the Naval Academy ( a long time ago) - so I'm not a complete idiot. I have a mathematical and engineering mind. But when it comes to operating computers I'm basically Freddie Flintstone. That's why I put off for so many years "diving" into the world of CNC. Now I am the owner of a Next Wave CNC machine. And after a lot of frustration with the User's Manuals and other videos this video is the first one that has put me at ease - at least so far. Now I'll continue watching and I'll comment again after I am able to compete a basic carving with my basic SD100 CNC machine.

Brad, wow I'm glad to hear that the video is providing you with the clarity and guidance you've been seeking for CNC operation. Your diverse background and expertise are impressive, and it's great to see that you're bridging the gap between your technical knowledge and computer operation in the realm of CNC. Keep watching, learning, and I hope by the end of the video, you'll be confidently crafting with your SD100! Happy cncing brother!

I’m in the exact same boat! Twenty seven years in Intelligence for the USAF, Ivy League education in medicine and aeronautical engineering but when it comes to computers I can email, pay my bills and social media are the extent of my abilities. I still use a drafting machine on a drafting table for my designs. I FINALLY took the leap into both a CNC and laser cutter/engraver and I was utterly out of league. I’ve watched this video 3 times so far and Garret explains the basics far better than Vetric does. Now that my CNC has arrived and is operating after several problems with the controller so I’m looking forward to my first actual attempt!! I at least feel comfortable prior to going to my in person training sessions at Axiom near Nashville in late March. Fingers crossed!!

I should note that since watching this video, I have successfully created about ten CNC carvings. I've made some mistakes too, but all in all I'm off to a great start, which might not have been so great without this guidance. thanks for your videos and teaching style - it's helpful to this Freddie Flintstone trying to be a George Jetson. Soon I'll be buying some of your CNC router bits.@@IDCWoodcraft

I'd previously designed a speaker front baffle but I learned how to do the toolpaths so I could see the model in 3D. Just awesome. Thats going to save a lot of annoying circle routing. @IDCWoodcraft6 ай бұрын
I would not recommend cut 2D for the inlays that you want to make. You want v carve inlays. They seat much better. That will require you to get vcarve desktop or pro. The difference between desktop and pro is desktop will only allow you to work with projects or no bigger than 24 in. So if you're going to inlay on guitar next, you will probably want to use the pro version . That would be this one sienci.com/product/vectric-vcarve-pro-v11/?ref=idcwoodcraft

Hands Down this is the BEST beginner tutorial I have come across so far. It is full of valuable information, and I very much appreciated all the extra information you injected into the tutorial. It is very often important to not only know what a software feature does but why and when it should be used as well. I would have only changed one thing in the video. Since this is a beginner video, it would have been nice to see you take the saved project to the CNC machine and demonstrate the actual procedure of executing the gcode to cut out the project. To be honest I did think the video was very basic and proceeded very slowly - however I acknowledge that there are people who do need that level of instruction. That being said I also found it to be informative. It answered more questions for me than I thought it would and I learned quite a bit. Definitely easier than poking around. So now I'll have to continue watching your videos :). The one remaining question I need to resolve is - with a Snapmaker 2.0, with it's bed size, why do I need VCarve Pro instead of VCarve Desktop. I see in the comparison chart there are some differences so hopefully subsequent videos will make that clear. Thanks!
@IDCWoodcraft10 ай бұрын
fredlef, great question brother! The biggest difference is that with Vcarve pro you are not limited to the 24"x24" project size. With bigger machines, this becomes a big problem.

Over the last two weeks, I've picked up an entry size for my purposes CNC, couple bits from you guys and other places, and have tried no fewer than 6 CAM software packages. I'm transferring a lot of accumulated knowledge so it's pretty easy to figure out a program for me, though there's a lot of necessary details, specifically the bits, that will trip me up at times. Kind of like trying to muddle your way through a new language that some terms you just don't know. Anyway, I'm primarily going after 3D cutting capabilities, which has dramatically reduced available solutions, but I've been really impressed with VCarve. It does everything I need it to do with great resolution and a mostly uncluttered UI, where some software will do XX really well but the UI is a mess, or others have a great UI, easy to figure out, but don't have the capability I need for several upcoming projects (making parts and doing molds most immediately), or having importable tool libraries. I was really using your video to see if there were any tricks I may have missed or other capacities I've not explored, but enjoy the channel in general and think I'll stick around. 👍

C-M-E, I'm glad to hear you've found success with VCarve for your 3D cutting projects! It sounds like you've put in a lot of effort to find the right software fit for your needs. Keep exploring and experimenting! Thanks for your support and for watching our channel!

Im considering getting a CNC (Newbie). The machine itself doesn't scare me, the Software doesn't scare me, it's the router bits and the feed and speeds that concerns me. Seems like there are so many variables. Where to start? @@IDCWoodcraft

Glad for guys like Garrett helping us newbies out. I have purchased a large CnC and would like to make my own stair stringers. I assume this won't be too difficult to route the stringers and risers, using V-Carve Pro. Anyone ever make their own before? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
@IDCWoodcraft5 ай бұрын
sparky494112, That's awesome that you're diving into making your own stair stringers! Using V-Carve Pro will definitely be a big help in routing them out. Make sure to measure accurately and secure your material well before cutting. Remember to do a test run on scrap wood before using your final pieces. Good luck!
