Ha! I had the Ideal Electronic Jet and the Steve Canyon helmet in 1959, got them for Christmas that year. I was nine. Loved to play with it. Ironically, ten years later, I joined the USAF and calibrated the radar, weapons control systems, and the LCOSS (Lead Computing Optical Sight System) of the F4-D Phantom jet. And, yep, there I was sitting in the cockpit with the radar screen, control stick, combining glass reticle for the front sight...just like the days with my Ideal jet. Small world.

Living in NYC at that time I watched those shows and saw many of the IDEAL commercials. Had quit a few of those toys as well. Ahhhh, the good ole days.

I had the Ideal fighter jet and I loved it. It was the first toy flight simulator.

I had one of these and loved it. Became a pilot in mid 80's probably because of it.

@ironman5454 ...many of the toys back then required you to at least move around, go outside and 'play'. In this respect things have changed. Kids spend more time sitting in front of a screen and 'playing'. We'd play 'war games' which had us running all through the neighborhood, one team chasing the other instead of 'shooter' computer games over the internet. You can't hold a 'program' in your hands ! Ok. gonna shud up now and enjoy all these great vids - thanks for the memories! This is GREAT !

This brought back memories that I thought I could never ever relive! I was 5 when this came out, and I used to watch the Steve Canyon show, Fred Scott, Sandy Becker, and Officer Joe Bolton. I can't thank you enough! I remember the Steve Canyon toys too, my good friend got the Jat cockpit toy, boy, was I in envy!! LOL!!

I remember the fighter jet toy. Unfortunately $20.0 was a ton of money back in 1959. My dad was the only breadwinner in those days in a family if five...so I did without. Mom would constantly remind me that "money doesn't grow on trees".

That's amazing, that those four channels in New York still air today. Of those four, only WPIX, Channel 11, still uses its call letters here in 2012, as a CW affiliate. The other three are now using different call letters (Channel 4 went from WRCA to WNBC in 1960, Channel 5 from WNEW to WNYW-Fox 5 in 1986 and Channel 13 from WNTA to WNDT, going public in 1962, and to WNET in 1970).

Maybe in a way, this helped you to become a better and stronger person...someone who appreciated things more as he got older. Kids today take WAY too much for granted and get too much handed to them! No one appreciates anything anymore! >:(

Did you ever have the red plastic rockets with the pot metal tips ? They took a sticky cap - when you dropped them on the side walk or tossed 'em at a wall, the cap would pop. They were really cheap price wise and I had just as much fun with them as with my 'Robot Commando' which got boring after the 1st week LOL !! Bet my parents would have loved to know this before hand ! I drove 'em nuts for that Robot - had to have it !! If you have extra $ now you can find 'em all on ebay. I bought a few

How 'bout Sonny Fox on Wonderama ? Longest kids show ever - from what, 9am to 1pm Sundays ?? Officer Joe and the 3 Stooges/Popeye. Sandy Becker used to say 'Time for a commercial break' and he'd snap a carrot in half when he said 'break'.Tryin' to remember Officer Joe replacement - "Jack ....?". "Chiller Theatre" was one of my favs along with Saturday morning favs "The Bowery Boys/East Side Comedy". Soupy Sales/White Fang...man, they were the days. And toy commercial after toy commercial !

Anyone NYC areas remember 'Floyd' or 'Loyd" Kirchner and 'Clowny' ? I think on WPIX or WOR ? He was a circus ring master with a wise guy hand puppet ? 'Cocoa Marsh' or 'Bosco'...used to know all the shows and sponsors..all fading now LOL ! "Sky king/Penny" and the 'Nabisco' mark on the planes tale...'TheTexas Rangers'/Tootsie Roll Pops and the 'Nestles Choclate' dog (puppet basset hound ?) on the roller coaster: Kids sing: "N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestles makes the very best" ...Dog sez: chaaawwklit".

@applesweeter, according to the inflation calcuators I used, the equivalent prices today would be $145 for the fighter pilot, $99 for the missile base and 22.75 for the helmet.

9 years later in 2019 the prices would be even higher. That helmet alone would cost probably $40.

@1400deadwood Yes they did force you to use imagination - because after an hour of playing with them you realized you'd been duped and they were boring LOL !! So one had to think of creative ways to make them fun. No 'Control Tower Voice', wind sound effects etc. How many times can you shoot a dart at the wall ? LOL! I remember a stash of fire crackers/M-80s used to make them more exciting. The commercials themselves were exhilarating - the anticipation of Christmas a.m. Hard to live up to.

I suppose it was nice to be warned when these ads would air. It was really done well though and it was not a hard sell at all.

I'm pro military (not pro war) and I grew up with all these toys. I gotta say, looking back here, wtf ?? WHY were we playing machine gunner and bomber pilots etc ? I had a HUGE collection of Army men, used to make my own burnt out buildings/war settings for them - the whole 9 yards but it strikes me now as being a bit bizarre !And we got most of these toys for our 'BIRTHDAY" and CHRISTMAS !! Yeehaa, shoot 'em dead LOL !! I know,'Cold War', nukes, Reds etc but still, a little heavy handed ! LOL!!

@MelanieLouM Maybe but I remember most of these toys winding up in the closet/garbage back then too, There were just tons of toys - like this vid tells, they were 'in our fcae' so to speak and they always kept coming up with the next best thing. Not that much unlike todays electronics that become obsolete in no time. Kids start appreciating 'stuff' when they've earned the money and have to buy for themselves. I luv revisiting the 'good ol' days' here but really, I don't think much has changed.
