I Built An Infinite Terrarium

I wanted to make a terrarium build that was unique, this one features an infinity cube as the container. I am still new to terrariums and a beginner but they are fairly easy to set up. Making this DIY terrarium has plants from the native area and I might try a waterfall or aquarium terrarium for the next time I want to try making a closed terrarium ecosystem. Making a terrarium for beginners is not difficult as the most complicated part of this project is the custom container and figuring out how to make a terrarium and following guides was not difficult to learn the basics. For inspiration on this I looked at SerpaDesign to learn more about terrariums before fully building one. Feel free to ask any questions you might have for how to build a terrarium and I hope this serves as a tutorial for you to make your own.

Probably should have made a pinned comment sooner for the update but I am still new and scuffed so here is the update for the status of all the plants and the ability to get the files: -Do you have files you can sell? EDITED 1/14: Files are now available over on my Etsy Store: idealideacreations.etsy.com , the digital files that I used to make this project can be found there. Take a look at the product description if you want more information on them, -How is the terrarium doing? Overall good, some parts not so good. For the simplest answer, the container has been working well, its mainly my lack of knowledge of what plants would be best in here that is the problem. The thing that had the most problems were the ferns, they died off really quickly so I don't think this was the right environment for them but everything besides those have been growing well. Going into this I was planning on leaving the terrarium untouched for 6months before doing anything to it just to see how it does but a month in there was a mold problem from the dead ferns so I added in springtails and they instantly solved the problem and it hasn't been a problem since. Everything else has been doing fine, the "vine like" plant that I added has been growing still almost to much and it crowds the lower lights so I might have to trim them back if they continue. The moss is just being moss and just vibing. The lighting and atmosphere of the terrarium has been good, with the plants still growing the lighting seems to be working fine and the acrylic fogs up in the early mornings but clears up pretty quickly after. The actual design specifics on the container have all worked well, there are some things that I will change for the Version 2.0 though but nothing critical that is a glaring issue, more just ease of use now that I have had it for a while. -Version 2.0 when? Honestly, it will be a little while but with the second version of this I plan to make it more manageable to recreate so that I can sell them to people who want one and have been asking if they can get one. The new version is in the works but It will be a bit since I want to see how this terrarium continues to grow as I incorporate everything that I have learned from making this initial design into the new and improved one while still balancing everything else I am working on but I am just as excited for the new version as you all are. I will try to keep you all updated as I get closer to finishing it. Thank you all for the continued support! Feel free to continue to ask any questions that I didn't get answered well or didn't cover.

That's my one issue with this video. I tried to make a (non-infinite) terrarium once with native plants, but a bunch of slugs, snails, and a few tiny insects hatched. There must have been eggs laid on the plants that I couldn't see and I would warn others about that if they tried using wild plants. Other than that, wonderful video and a beautiful piece or work.

It would be a good idea to add some spring tails to your terrarium, they're also called garden lice. They eat fungal spores (preventing mold outbreaks) and decaying plant matter (promoting faster compost cycles). You could use isopods (like pill bugs / rolly polies) but they eat living plants as well and are prone to large die offs.
@klippschliefer4968

all these animals are in there since the start. you cant put earth and rotten wood in a terrarium without taking isopods, springtails and small ant colonies with it. ( own experience)

@ChrisAegrim
@ChrisAegrim Жыл бұрын
@@officialnoonon it's common practice to put some in, but the necessity depends on the type of terrarium you are building. For a reptile the stuff we use is "sterile" not literally, as that's borderline impossible, but the idea is to build something as clean as possible, as to include as little outside influences that could potentially harm the animal (bacteria, parasites, etc.), wood for example gets baked to kill everything off and substrate is specifically mixed for that purpose out of clean components and it's a bad idea to include just stuff gathered outside in the terrarium for that reason. So there is little (non is basically impossible) microfauna in the system and we jumpstart a new one by introducing springtails and isopods. But if you do a native terrarium where you don't intend to keep an animal in, it's fine to gather stuff from outside and you'll already have the microfauna included, so adding springtails for example is totally optional.

9:55 - That is Phedimus; probably Phedimus spurius The "fern" plant you are refering to might be Achillea millefolium (not a fern). I believe you also added a Potentilla hippiana, the silvery plant. I am not too sure because I couldn't find any good shots of it. The moss you are adding is probably Syntrichia ruralis; especially if you are on the west coast, or very up in the North. If you are on the west coast, I would probably say the plant added at 11:35 might be bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). This is such a cool idea! If you decide to build a version 2.0, I'd highly reccomend going to a nursery and buying tropical plants (many will carry small pots of plants specifically for small terrariums). The issue with collecting plants from outdoors, especially if you live somewhere temperate, is that many of the plants aren't suited for living in a almost consistently moist environment with mild temperatures for a long period of time. Hope this helps!

If you get your plants from the forest, try to dig out the roots, not just plucking them. Or harvest their seeds when they're done flowering and sow them directly! 9:52 that plant with the silvery/white leaves belongs to the Rosaceae family, genus is Argentina and the species might be anserina but i'm not entirely sure about the last one, lots of species similarity. Argentina anserina would be my guess. Likes to grow between pavement in my country and almost impossible to kill (will die but will grow next year again) if the roots stay alive, flowers are yellow and nice. 9:54 Thats a Hylotelephium, the species is almost impossible to tell if not flowering, and without roots, so most likely wouldn't survive. Gets quite tall, big flowers.

I've seen you talking about being a "small channel" and that you are "growing slowly" in the comments, but if you keep up videos of this quality, I believe the channel will grow SUPER fast. Keep up the hard work, and know that it is paying off!!!

Crazy to think given the right conditions one of these terrariums could outlast humanity.

This video was offered to me on the start page and I'm absolutely surprised that your canal is so small. 100% gonna give you a sub, you really deserved it.👏

You can also try making one with 2 mirrors that are facing each other at 90 degree. That spread the forest out horizontally.

OK that is pretty dope. Two thoughts. 1: Fingerprints. 2: D20 numbering. I liked, three thoughts. They make special fabric for keeping the soil in a pot with big holes in the bottom. It's called drainage mesh and is very common in bonsai.

Imagine being a little springtail living in some forest, going about your daily life, and then you're suddenly teleported into this kaleidoscopic geometric disco ball.

I would have used single WS2812B leds for the corners because it would be less messy without the strip inbetween and they are individual addressable.

Since the inside is mostly a mirror you can have most of the lighting in the lid at the top and point the led's in the corners. You could of cut the edges at an angle and glued it on a flat plane.

In the end result, the mirrored surfaces had kind of a milky appearance. I don't know if it has to do with the photography, the internal lighting, or both. I did enjoy the novel construction technique using the tensioning cables. That rocks!.
