What about (1,5) (2,10) (4,20). This is linear but the method you demonstrated would indicate nonlinear. a change in the x is fine as long as the change in x divided by the change in y is constant.
@adriannesalazar67 Жыл бұрын
Not even that, like you said it is liner, all he had to do was multiply by 2 with the x 1*2= 2 2*2= 4 4*2= 8 8*2= 16

You can't do a vertical line test from left to right, that would be horizontal. Verticals is up and down and you were doing it from left to right and calling it a verticals line test. So that's wrong so no offense but if that's wrong then who knows what else is in this video
@TheLovaticFandomChannel10 жыл бұрын
That's about the only thing that's wrong. Everything else is fine.
@rod24597 жыл бұрын
The vertical line test goes from left to right as you move it; however the line goes from top to bottom. Hence the word "vertical". You are checking to see if the line touches two or more points (y values) for a given x value. If it does, it isn't a function.

Does it have to be addition or subtraction or would multiplication and division work as well?
@MartyBrandl5 жыл бұрын
It depends what's going on with the variables. Give me an example of what you are thinking of?
@meghanhardin66015 жыл бұрын
Marty Brandl sorry for being late but this is an example: Domain: 1,2,3,4 Range: 3,5,7,9 ^This would be addition Domain: 1,2,3,4 Range: 2,4,6,8 ^This would be multiplication. I am having trouble differentiating between linear functions and direct variation.
@MartyBrandl5 жыл бұрын
@@meghanhardin6601 Actually, both of those would be linear. Another way you could look at it is by graphing the ordered pairs and checking to see if they form a line. Also, direct variation is just a special form of a linear equation where the y-intercept is 0. I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have further questions! Keep after it! You can do it! :-)
@gracej19313 жыл бұрын
If the line is squiggly and going up and down is it a function or non function? And is it a Non linear or linear?
@MartyBrandl3 жыл бұрын
If it passes the vertical line test, it is a function. A "squiggly" line would be nonlinear. It has to be straight to be linear. I hope that helps! Keep working hard and asking great questions! 👍

How come at 2:09 it is not a function I can see how it’s a linear but why not a function?
@MartyBrandl Жыл бұрын
Vertical lines are the only type of line that is not a function. It would fail the vertical line test because on the line it would touch an infinite number of times. Another way to look at it would be that all the x-values are the same. I hope that helps! Good question!! 😊

An x = line is a vertical line. It would fail the vertical line test, so it would not be a function.
