Last year was the first year that I’ve stalked my zucchini. I got more zucchini off my plant then I ever had before when I just left it on the ground. I would cut all the limbs off below the closest zucchini to the ground. And continue to cut the limbs off. In a way it looks like a miniature palm tree. One thing I really liked about it it did not use a lot of the ground and I can plant my other zucchini closer to each other

You are lucky. Even with a routine I haven't been able to keep things off by this time. Usually late August is my time when nothing I do seems to stop anything here in Georgia. But on the bright side, it gives me a bit to transition to Fall/Winter Lol

Thanks for the info! Struggle with this every year. Question about fertilizing. When planting from seed, at what point do you start fertilizing the plant?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
Most of my beds are prepared early before planting. I water seeds and starts in with liquid fertilizer and feed mid growth. You dont have to feed every month for in ground plants. I don’t bother at all about the PM just let my plants go, is natural. I used to stress but then I realized that is not worth it. So I always have more seedlings ready to go when one is going down. I know is not possible for everyone but squash is so easy to grow.

A question about powdery mildew and gardener manners and ethics: my garden is a section of an oversized planter behind my apartment building's parking lot, which I share with a couple of neighbors. The other gardening neighbors don't seem to be doing anything about powdery mildew - there's a squash plant growing in the patch next to mine (brushing up against some of my plants) that's so covered with mildew it looks like it was spray-painted white. Ordinarily, I would never touch another gardener's plants. But I look at this neighbor's plant and see a fungal bomb that's endangering my garden no matter how I treat my own plants. Would I be completely out of line if I "accidentally" overshot and sprayed their plant with neem oil while I'm spraying my own? 🤔
@cynthiafisher99074 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t seem like anyone should care if you’re using an organic spray like Neem oil, but could you ask the other gardener? Maybe they are totally unaware of what it is and that it’s a bad thing.
@chalseywilder9374 жыл бұрын
That's a health hazard, I'm not saying report it. But talk to them
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Best thing is to talk to them. Whats the worst that can happen. But the PM there or not there wont harm you or your plants. Only because it would show up with or without their gardens there. Spraying protects your plants. Annoying yes, but maybe ask them if they need help with the powdery mildew, especially if you found a solution. Good luck. Can I use the leaves of my Zuchini plants that are covered in PM in my compost bin?
@C...G...4 жыл бұрын
you can do whatever you like
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Honestly yes. The spores survive on living host plants, weeds and dont survive the compost process. Some people say toss them but remember it is airborne and overwinters on host plants. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN yeah I meant the patreon button... You're asking for help That's one way that people could help I mean you've been doing this for years as so why not have people that want to donate money that way also instead of never mind okay. Lots of KZbin people have a join button. I was just thinking it would be a good way to save money for your cause right now. But I guess if people donate directly to the cause then I can use it as a write off. I'm not used to this kind of thing so that was my thought pattern.

I didn't have this problem when I was doing my container gardening last year. Does it require a certain type of environment to grow? I live in Washington state zone 6b. It's very dry here and when I'm growing vegetables, I do have to add water to keep the plants hydrated.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Yep. Environmental factors are key. They are lots of mildews and sometimes they look similar. But just take notes and ask around about what you get. Maybe you dont have the right conditions. What do you think of a milk spray for PM? It has been a horrible year for PM for me. Between the vine borers and the powdery mildew I've only gotten a handful of melons, 2 summer squash, 1 spaghetti squash and no zucchini😭
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
So my though is if it is wiping out crops, you might want to go for the chemical types that are rain resistant. If it is not wiping out crops, figuring out a prevention routine is key. Organic serenade is good. Milk works but I have not done it for a full season. I experiment but the mechanism is unclear. I am reading a lot about it now. You want whole milk. You want all the proteins to be in it. You actually want this to be spread on a sunny day as evidence show the sun and proteins interact on the leaf.
