Jon Christie, owner of Wild Mountain Bees, locates the queen bee in the hive. We take a look at her distinguishing features as she searches for an empty cell to fertilize the worker eggs. The queen takes one flight out of the hive, soon after she hatches and gains her strength. During that flight, she mates with as many other drones as possible and carries their sperm back with her to the hive. She is then responsible for laying the eggs and fertilizing them for the rest of her life.

Thanks this is a great video. I just did a successful split in my first year of bee keeping. I know she's there because there is fresh larva a month and a half after the split but I've still never spotted the queen in either of my hives! Maybe next spring...

What is the percentage of female and male in bee population? 50% 50% like human?
@Cookieglue

*facepalm The queen is the only female
@Cookieglue
@Cookieglue 6 жыл бұрын
I AM ACTUALLY SO SORRY THAT IS A LIE I AM STUPID!!!!! So basically all the drone bees are male bees. In contrast the worker bees are non-sexually mature female bees that aren't sexually mature as they aren't fed royal jelly their whole life (like the queen). So the ratio of males to females depends on the drone to worker+queen ratio.
@PrairieRoseBitbyaFox
@PrairieRoseBitbyaFox 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't know this! I also assumed the only female was the queen. What fascinating creatures these are! Thanks for doing your research and coming back to correct your original response!

Work bees are female too, only drones are male.
@queenjiwon.768

females are more than males because basically males are only used for mating with the queen and then they die. But that's not all the time!
