I watched a lot of your videos, and others and started a nursery and covered my costs, though I lost out on a $100 sale I’ve made a lot of connections and people not only love my plants but I’m becoming known in my community. Your videos have made things much easier along with KZbin in general. So much variety of info. You’ve forced me to bottom water and it’s great. My garden is going to be amazing plus might get to sell my tomatoes, and my parents will have food coming for years to come after covid is over. 🤙🏽

Gary has some of the better videos on starting seeds and getting your garden off to a good start. My collards, kohlrabi, broccoli, and cabbage are growing like weeds, anticipating transplanting them outside as the weather gets closer to spring. Keep in mind I have never grown anything outside before May, last year I tried beets and it was 10 degrees a few days after transplant. About fertilizer, I use the pink Miracle grow for tomatoes and only use 1/2 Tsp per gallon and will increase if the plants start to mature or look like they need more.

Not half dosage. 1 gallon of water and 1 tablespoon is typically a full outdoor does. So 1 gallon, 1/4 tablespoon is reduce by 3/4. How early should I plant my seeds? I live in B.C and was thinking early March but wondering if I should start them soon? (Tomatoes., peppers and cukes) thanks!
@TimSheets
@TimSheets 9 жыл бұрын
My rule of thumb is start pepper seeds 12 weeks before your planned planting out day (average frost date) and 8 weeks for tomatoes and most other faster growing plants. I usually plant outside mid-May, so I will be starting pepper seeds (and maybe some herbs - will have to look at the packages) very soon. If I start tomatoes this early, they will be out of control by the time mid-May gets here.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 9 жыл бұрын
Tim Sheets I agree. I just loaded another video about that. This year I started my peppers 12 weeks before last frost. My tomatoes where huge with 8 week but my peppers always remained small as I once started them at the same time. 12 weeks just will give you bigger pepper transplants.

Any idea why the cotyledons on a few of my pepper seedlings are so small at the time of true leaf emergence? (skip to the tl;dr, everything else is context) The largest, my carolina reaper, being 30mm tall, nice 1-2mm thick purple stem with 12-15mm long cotyledons and true leaves not far behind at 8-10mm. 3 other seedlings share similar behavior, my yellow scorpion is a perfect + shape with all 4 leaves as wide as it is tall at about 20mm. The other reaper has similar proportions to the first but even smaller and and thinner cotyledons relative to the true leaves, I would describe it as genetically weaker relative to its brother but going back to the true leaves, Its as if they emerged really early (on the optimistic side) or the growth of the cotyledons was slowed/true leaf emergence was somehow triggered early conditionally (on the more realistic side) One of my late bloomers (firecracker) that hasnt spent so much time in the cold garage over its life, since ive improved my setup is overtaking my other seedlings in terms of cotyledon growth and its only 11 days old now where the other 3 popped middle of last month, the oldest being 27 days old, 23 days old (reapers) and 20 days old(Yscorpion) which all sprouted leaves at the exact same time despite different ages. Though the large size of my youngest (firecracker) probably also has something to do with it being a variety with nowhere near as much heat as the other three seedlings, it's pretty much an ornamental jalapeno. I have a few other varieties though that have yet to sprout at all (chocolate scorpion, ghosts and chocolate ghosts) which went in at the same time as my sprouted seedlings. What im thinking did it is that they spent some nights soon after sprouting (at this point 2/3rds of their life lol) in a chilly garage with outside temps sometimes as low as 13 or less. They've always had warm light ontop the red/blue aquatic plant light im using as a grow light and more recently a heat pad but the cold is all I can think of as to why the cotyledons are so small, legit like theyre a fkn thumbnail long and i feel like they should be triple the size for having sprouted true leaves. Theyre in a warmer spot in the house now and they seem to be responding to it nicely but the question/curiosity is still present. its definitely not a lack of light because im dancing the razors edge on burning them, they've lightened up little but are still vivid green. Tl;dr: Am I correct in assuming the reason my seedlings have under sized cotyledons relative to their true leaves and relative to the commonly observed cotyledon size of other seedlings growing true leaves, is due to not being given ideal levels of warmth over-night, causing cotyledon growth to slow in the window of time before the plant grew true leaves?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 жыл бұрын
I dont know for sure as its only a few. Generally if there was a problem it would be across all of them. I would agree with you that the cold just slowed them down. As the roots get the warmth they need, the greenery takes off. I’m trying to figure out why a few of my tomato seedlings have both yellow leaves. I have an LED grow light and I think I might have had it too close, 3 inches. Or could it be fertilizer burn? In a 9 gallon container I made my starter mix but added 1/4 cup of blood meal and 1/4 cup of bone meal (direction from a garden page to do). I don’t think it’s that because I mixed it really well and not all the seedlings are like that. Plus, out of a 9 gallon container, the amount I added isn’t enough to really do anything.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN

Adding organic to starting mix like that can cause issues but I dont know if that would do it. Especially since it is a low amount as you say. Best to not over water. They have plenty of food. Good luck. What are the NPK proportions of your liquid fertilizer?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 9 жыл бұрын
They vary. That was Miracle Gro. I think the proportions are 24-8-16. For the seedlings I prefer a bit more Nitrogen. But keep MG at 1/2 strength. I use other but find most of the synthetics copy MG's ratio.

Does using synthetics mean your vegetables will have chemicals in them?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 8 жыл бұрын
+Elijah Purcell Nope. Chemicals are the building blocks of organic fertilizers and processed fertilizers. It is a common mistake people take synthetic as artificial. It is more like synthesized into a form the plant can use. Microbiology takes the chemical compounds in organics and breaks them down into a chemical form the plant can use. People take, for instance, nitrogen and put it through the Haber process to create a form of nitrogen the plant can use. Another example is Magnesium Sulfate or MgSO4. It is a naturally occurring chemical salt but organically excepted. Not processed.
