New generations - more and more - fail to progress past social strategies conceived by the age of two. Dr. Jordan B Peterson explains how roles dictated by feelings and ego, rather than by social and group progression, can be entirely detrimental.

Dr. Peterson, Thank you. I am a single mother and I am always looking for wise advice on how to raise my child without allowing my single motherhood to damage her, and to give her as much possibility, as I can, for a productive future. This video gave me more direction, pointed out more things I need to address, in under 30 minutes, than many things I have researched. I am a psychology student at a university, but I have yet to sit through a lecture like yours. I'm so thankful for these lectures/videos.

I was a male single parent. My younger girl is probably older than you… What I did was approach the wife of some friends of mine that had some skills and characteristics that I’d thought about and identified as positive and in common with my (in this case) older daughter’s personality and interests. I asked if she would be willing to actively, proactively provide role model, mentor, and relational roles in her life an an ongoing, weekly basis. The woman asked to think about it and discussed with her husband- and then agreed, thankfully, as I had not a plan “B.” That she was married and she knew me and my character removed the ulterior motive factors that one might imagine could be construed more readily with a single woman AND the fact her “life conflict” was as a married family woman I think gave my daughter the best surrogate female role model I could have engineered. I did the same for my younger- a little more difficult due to her needs and personality but still a strong positive influence was resulting. So that is a pattern you could duplicate in time as it appears that your child’s father isn’t filling or isn’t available to fulfill that vital role. In your case I think it would be better to ask the couple together if ‘John.x’ would be willing to accept that role and run with it. You do need to be quite contemplative before picking a potential couple and be discriminating with who you even consider. I don’t know if you ‘follow’ your posts but I hope you read this. Have a great life!

@@fishhuntadventure I have read/heard similar solutions/suggestions, and have considered something along those lines. I think Dr. Peterson was on point when he called out the higher-caution, lower-risk-taking parenting style of mothers compared to fathers. This along with what he called "the broad-scale distrust of male patterns of child and adolescent care that now characterize our society" (27:30), point out precisely why the notion of reaching out in such a manner (seeking surrogate father figures, that is) is not mainstream, even though doing so feels somewhat intuitive. I agree that every child needs both a mother figure and a father figure, and I can never be a father. My personal applications were: 1.Don't let the demands of providing a home and building a future tire me to the point that I passify her with screens. 2.Don't allow the fact that she doesn't have a father tempt me to indulge her out of pity. 3.Don't smother her with over-protection. There was much more to the video, of course, but these were my areas of caution.

The more letters they add, the more inconsistent it becomes. Consider the further additions of "IA". Both of those supposed homogeneous groups have nothing to do with LGBTQ. The asexuals effectively having an inverse interest to those groups. Though, I doubt that anyone who was actually asexual would identify as such. It would be something that they just don't care about. Imagine joining a club of people specifically not interested in a particular hobby, that would be absurd.

It has an effect throughout life, and is never really completely healed. despite years of attempts to 'get help'. It's not just the college age kids of today. It's also their parents generation, who grew up in the 70's, during the great divorce wave. Gen-X has boatloads of "issues", and it has just multiplied over time, now that they are parents and grandparents, the resulting mess is..... well, look at it.... quite depressing. Many see the 80's with fond nostalgia, but the antics of the 80's teens were a dark omen of what was to come. I also had learned that a child's inner ear development benefited from dad's tossing children into the air. Something that makes some mom's cringe. I knew they needed to wrestle to understand what hurts themselves ... & therefore hurts others. This was in the early 80's I don't know how I knew it. But I made sure that they got to spend time with my brother-in-law. He stepped up teaching them guy stuff. He dedicated time for them. Maybe more time than a lot of dads. I also made myself resist the tendency to stop my kids from climbing trees & such 'dangerous' activity. I once had to climb the tree to help my youngest who got up & couldn't get down. Even then I guided her down herself. "Grab that branch ... step down to your right ... etc". We had wrestling fests with all of us on my bed. I hadn't planned to be a single mom. I pulled Mr. Mom duty for the first few years of our first couple of children. Not too long after I accepted my limitations causing our family income to drop slightly in the short term, we went to a small regional zoo. While at the zoo, I took my 2nd (girl, probably about 18 months at the time) to the swings. So, I am there just flinging her, and she is having a blast. A mother brings her son (probably 3 or 4) to the swing next to us, and the kid was freaking out whenever he goes even half as high as my younger daughter was comfortable with. I could tell that the kid was going to have problems with the way he was being coddled. I think we all know that kids need that physical play at a young age, but we far too often sacrifice our children's development to their mother's comfort. It won't end well for anyone. I applaud you ability to put your children above your comfort level.

Excellent presentation, and very clear. I'm reminded of a conversation I had to listen to while sitting on a terrace once. A family of about 6, 5 adults and 1 boy of about 6 years old, entertained themselves by picking on this boy's behavior constantly. The boy was bored, didn't know what to do, and no one caught his attention in a positive way. He was judged all of the time, with negative critical remarks, compared to others who did better than him, in short, I watched this boy growing more anxious, annoyed, and helpless at the same time. I thought "This is a child who could easily end up as a member of a criminal gang, welcoming him not for his value, but for his eagerness to be accepted and acknowledged. Do you see?

Having followed many of Dr Peterson's lectures I could say without doubt this is a very concise summary of so many issues he has tried to address. I think this may not be well received BUT it hits the nail on the head, it also exposes weaknesses I have come to realize in my parenting that has made life more (or less?) challenging for my teenagers. A simple thing like "You do not get to choose the name your friends call you." seems to fall into this perfectly: your close social group decide your "social identity" with little you can do to dictate the result and it takes some sophistication to accept it and wear the label proudly. I am glad that he did take some time to say that "adults" who are trying to come to terms with some development delays are to be viewed with sympathy. But the devil in the details is what to find "acceptable" in society, what is to be "normalized" and what should not be to give stimulus to claimed need for further development. I can only say that having a world view of "play" being dictated to with no compromise will make for a rather frustrating state of affairs. This is excellent and I wish you all well.

He always gives me a feeling of …”oh yeah, that’s right. I already KNEW that.” I think back to history class back when I was fifteen. Europe. The Reformation. The Spanish Armada. The Thirty Years War. Wars of Religion. Martin Luther. I was a good kid, I listened, tried to learn the dates, the exam questions etc etc etc…but there was an important BIT which I never understood. Never understood the WHY or HOW. Like…why and how can people have a thirty years war, much worse than Rwanda, that is about issues like….the Pope, infallible or no…the Eucharist, transubstantited or not, Priest, celibate or not, an Anglican Church or a Methodist Church…salvation by grace or by works…English or Latin Bible…..I just did not get it. HOW could people be killing each other over issues like that? That is why I bought the Marxist bullshit about material determinism…everybody fighting over class issues. I thought that stuff they said they were about …could not be it…could not be what they really cared about. And yet…..the question..what is the metaphysical essence of race and gender…what is the soul…in 2022 that unreal stuff is super real. The culture war is religious war. It is why you cannot reason with these people.

Superb explanation of what’s troubling our society today. I was just thinking about the children out there who are confused about their sex/gender because parents refuse to give them a compass to guide them in the right direction. Instead of letting children go through puberty so that they can develop biologically with the hormones that define and cement their sex/gender and thereby feel like they are indeed in the “right body”, puberty blockers are given to inhibit their physical and emotional development. How horrible to let a child believe that their own body isn’t good enough for them and that they must have surgery to “fix it”.

I didn't enjoy competitive play and I preferred the company of adults to that of children. I found it almost impossible to fit in with my peers in secondary school and spent much of my time by myself. Im almost 30 and I have suffered with profound mental health problems since my late teens. It seems to me that my delayed development fostered the anxiety and depression I have fought against for the last 10 years. This thesis makes so much sense to me. It's weird because you put you/us in a submissive passive position where Peterson is something like a higher being that takes petty on a lower class of humans by sharing some sort of hidden wisdom. You probably want things to go well for you, your family and your people. Or just humanity as a whole. I know I do. Let's rather view fighting for justice a duty for all of us. There's no honor in throwing a lifeline to someone that is drowning. Maybe someone is gifted as a good swimmer and can go further in saving someone, but the principle is the same. @@AFringedGentian We all can appreciate Longfellow’s beautiful words. Often, we reminisce about our youth and that of our children’s. Perhaps it’s because of happier times or even the hardships we had to endure. Either way, childhood is an important part of one’s life. Most times it predicts the outcome of adult behaviors. As parents we are fortunate to witness the childhoods of our own children and their dreams. As each generation has their own contribution of childhood nostalgia, the lessons learned, the wonderful innocence, the stubborn rebellion, the bruised knees and broken hearts. All the beautiful and perfect mistakes that become our own path, our own journey in life. I often find myself amazed at the simple yet brilliant and beautiful thoughts of the little ones. They are completely honest and innocent. The youth actually rejuvenate my mind and soften my thoughts. Perhaps that’s why they behold the fountain of youth, if only for a time their cup runneth over whether they realize it or not. It is up to the adults to reinforce and reassure a safe and loving environment for the little ones. God bless ✝️🙏🏻🕊

Thankyou I really found this conversation kind of revelating. My son is 14 and I'm a single mom I had one relationship where I was with his sisters father for about 11 years after. The entire time my 1rst ex was in his usual stage either absent or acting like a two year old himself. When me and my daughters father parted ways. It was not something I had much choice in. My sons father became much worse. And then my son. I have been flipping through everything I can to try to understand everything better. So that I can help keep him mentally healthy and stop backsliding. He was very often through 13 throwing two year old fits. I recently watched a video by Dr. Ramani on Malignant Narccism. ( Much to my chagrin I didn't know there were multiple types ) I simply don't usually involve myself with words that are at times. Thrown around too easily or often. But I believe that between that video and this video. I kind of feel like the light bulb is on and not off. Everyone's situation is always different due to external and internal factors. But this definitely helps me view my parenting with another lens of truth.

Jordan, this is by far the best of your new “rehearsed style” videos. I like how you explain things scientifically and psychologically, and point out the flaws in Freudian psychoanalysis. As an only child raised by a single mother, I can relate all too well to a lot of this. Thankfully my mother put me in lots of social activities during childhood to make up for my lack of siblings, including group therapy. I can still see, as an adult, my own psychological flaws due to having no siblings and a distant father, mostly due, like you said, to my mother’s obsession with safety. Thankfully, in the USA, this immature obsession with identity has not escalated to the legal level yet (thank God for the first amendment), but there are still plenty of companies that insist on using the “right pronouns.” 🙄

@@revan552 Why would some people feel the need to compel others with the law or company policy to be respectful by demanding they be talked to in a certain way? Could this not be seen as an authoritarian sentiment? "You must talk to me how I see fit or else I'll punish you." If that doesn't read authoritarian then you don't know what the word means. As such, it would appear to many that your type of argument is wrong at its moral foundation. Do you understand what Jordan means by the oedipal mother? The tyrannical feminine? The overprotective tendency of absolute compassion? If you don't understand these things then you'll never understand why it is wrong to frame the debate the way that you have. Making compassion the absolute moral imperative is simply a mistake. It is more moral to seek the betterment of others through loving, thoughtful, truthful guidance, and more often than not that requires one to suspend their compassion for instruction and discipline. Jordan has clearly identified this moment in our cultural development as a result of overgrown, underdeveloped children reaching adulthood not knowing what to do. This is exactly the result of parental overprotection and fixation on compassion as the highest moral imperative toward children. Children need discipline and instruction, not to be told that they're perfect exactly the way they are and that they'll figure out who they want to be one day and then be happy. It's a bad strategy. So yes, we can talk about being respectful, but sometimes what people need is to be told that they're wrong by people who know better. Or do we all know perfectly well everything that needs to be known for everyone all the time? If anyone thinks that, they need to be humbled quickly, regardless of how much they actually know.
@tylermoser2830
@tylermoser2830 Жыл бұрын
@@revan552 It depends on what you consider "well-being" to be. I think it's certainly possible that giving into demands of preferred pronouns is ultimately detrimental rather than beneficial, but that's an incredibly complex thing to look at. This is exactly the point of the almost half hour long video made by a well-educated, well-meaning man (unless you have already condemned him as otherwise) who has sought to articulate the complexity of the situation accurately and succinctly. What is simple, however, is the idea that legal force being put behind notions of "compassion" (like pronoun use or similar language use) in an authoritarian way to satisfy the demands of subjectivity of a substantial minority population of society is bad. It is also bad to simply treat them as correct in their supposed self-knowledge. How do they know that the best way for others to refer to them is by certain pronouns that have never before been widely accepted? And how often do these pronouns or identities change or morph or recreate themselves over time as any individual changes? There's very little foundation for many of the claims being made by gender ideology "experts". And many parents are simply bad parents. And many children are simply bad children. Many people are simply uninformed or ignorant people, whether about themselves or others, myself included. I know that sounds harsh, but it's true. And in my mind well-being for them means guiding them toward the truth, toward reason, toward discipline and self-control, toward meaning and sustainability, toward the future and out of an eternal present that has become self-indulgent, impulsive, and narcissistic. That's the role of parenting and education, and it's a role that has been perverted by many well-meaning but ignorant or uninformed people. Can we be respectful then? To a point, but there reaches a point where you have to simply say no to insanity or immaturity. You have to say no. You have to protect children from themselves and their inadequate and immature thoughts and motivate them to seek something better. Or else, how will they survive?

@@revan552 could you clarify what you mean by Peterson's morally flawed argument? You seem to agree with Jordan that compulsory "niceness" has no place being enforced by law, and should be unnecessary in any reasonable society. Also, while compassion is definitely highlighted in modern teachings of Christianity, it is not akin to rolling over for anyone that asks. There's always been nuance within compassion - submissive compassion as well as genuine compassion. The message of doing for others as you would wish others do for yourself is also deeper than simply being nice.

I don’t know how we can stop people from stunting their children’s growth in the developmental years by letting them overuse smart phones and tv screens without becoming authoritarian ourselves. One of the major problems I see is that the parents are not smart/wise or responsible enough (or both) to make sure their children aren’t spending too much time in front of a screen and not enough time interacting with peers and other people of various ages in the real world. There isn’t an easy answer…

It helped that I had a similarly aged neighbor boy that was always happy to play with me and do all sorts of crazy stuff.
