You know, it’s interesting you say this as my father growing up now that I think of it always had one hell of a time with a computer and with dealing with the quote on quote so called “computer guys” always used to get frustrated with the Indians on the phone who’s constantly charge him for things, as a kid I unfortunately was blamed a lot of the time as I played games on his computer as a kid, so they’d have my father fooled it was a virus and my dad figured me being young and dumb opened a bad page and got a virus to his work desktop.. Now looking back I remember being blamed so often for this that I completely lost privileges of going on his computer.. wasnt until these issues persisted long after i had stopped using it that he realized something was up. Looking back it was very easy for them to play onto the fact that it was just a young unsuspecting kid who pulled up a bad web page and got a virus while on the computer.

My great-aunt got scammed out of several thousand pounds a few years ago... I don't know which scam it was, but luckily, she mentioned it to several family members just a few hours later and they got down to the bank that day. Unfortunately, it wasn't a big enough amount that the bank flagged it as suspicious and she ended up losing the money :( Disgusting people. Thankfully, she doesn't/didn't have too many outgoing expenses so it didn't hurt her financially (ie she didn't have to borrow money off of people/companies to pay for other things), and she was helped by her family so that it doesn't happen again.

@ninuxy you're such a baby, every older generation will say the new generation is bad and every new generation is going to say the old generation is weak. be a kind human being and be good to people of every age and maybe your life will stop sucking so much since you're this angry over old people (that didn't have technology when growing up) being scammed online.
@towelcritic9891
@towelcritic9891 4 жыл бұрын
@ninuxy The man literally never complained about a millennial once in his comment, Why the hell are you so primed to attack the old that you come frothing at the mouth the moment someone utters the word "senior citizen"? He just thanked jim for helping teach people around his age about scammers and technology and you come in like "Hurr durr old dumb bc they didn't learn computers that I grew up with and have an intuitive knowledge of" Okay pal, Get an instrument you've never played before, then bang me out a fucking master tune with help from a guy that plays it giving you a few quick pointers. After all age/lack of exposure isn't an excuse to be a fucking idiot, right? Literacy with computers and digital tehcnology is a whole new ball game to people who havent been exposed to it nearly their entire life. You have a narrow-minded view, an utterly horrid grasp on generational differences and what the vast majority of senior citizens are actually like, and lastly and possibly most importantly you are the exact person you claim to hate, You literally blame shit on the "other" generation as "payback" when the people you're "paying back" would say the literal exact same thing about you. To them they are getting "payback" on the "millenials" you are what you hate, how do you feel? The funniest part about this is that when boomers come a raging id be right there by your side but jesus fucking christ man all the guy said was thanks and you outright attacked the poor guy. he EVEN specified "trusting individuals" at the end, NOT JUST other senior citizens, which could be anyone of any age or creed, but Nooooo you were so hyped up on your hating people over the age of 50 juice that you still had to take a fucking potshot, Jesus dude grow up.

"Believe me" is a pretty good giveaway. If they were honest, there would be no reason to say that. "I'm telling you" is a technique to avoid cognitive dissonance on the end of the scammer. When they start a phrase with "I'm telling you" the statement will be true no matter what follows, as they are in fact telling you whatever their lie is.

Any English speaking Indians I know around my age or my parents age speak English perfectly normally, but people of my grandparents generation tend to speak like your classic Indian tech support. I truly am at a loss as to where these people learn English like this, but it is infuriating to listen to... Illegal immigrants in the US disagree. A stolen SSN makes it easier for them to find employment. You get a rude surprise from the IRS eventually, though, since they've filed a W2 with your name and SSN and claimed all the exemptions needed to avoid having taxes withheld and often will file fraudulent documents (again, with your ID on them) to get a fat "refund" check.

He's supposed to be worried and upset about making a mistake that loses the 'company' money yet he chuckles in between gasps of horror. @@Nico97fr Sadly this is very true in many case. People can go through a legal process to prevent someone elderly or otherwise unable to manage their account from having control of it. Problem is someone still has to manage it and not everyone has someone they can trust. I also feel like passing a class to use online banking, rather than courtroom filing after someone incapable is given an account, would be more appropriate. Certain parameters are red flags and some scared kids with their first monetary accounts can make mistakes too. Fake holding a computer for ransom may work well on any child old enough to not just unplug the device and pretend they were not using it behind their parents back. A child swiping a card to pay for a video game or a teen afraid after porn are good examples of this scenario, especially paid porn on a device their parents own.

I recently had to transfer a large amount of money from my bank account in the UK to an account in the USA. After deciding to use TransferWise (a legit company) to complete the transfer (they typically offer better exchange rates and lower fees than the banks) I set up the transaction, only for my bank (NatWest) to flag it as a suspicious transaction. Not surprising since TransferWise can be used to ship money just about anywhere in the world, once the money has been sent to them. I received an email from the bank to call their security department, which I did, and spent a few minutes confirming my identity with information only I could know (like when I last changed the address on the account). I was also asked if I had received a call from the bank this morning about the transfer, and since I was out of the country, I said no, but that someone at home might have, but I haven't talked to anyone. Interestingly, that seemed to trigger the rep's concern that I might be being scammed. There was nothing I could say to convince him I knew exactly what the banking scams are, and that I even watch videos (like this one) on a regular basis! He told me I would have to go into a local branch to unlock my account, but I said needed the money before I got back to the UK, so that wouldn't fly. In the end, after talking to his manager, he asked me to ring off and call home to talk to the person who took the call and then call them back. I pointed out that I could simply pretend to do all that, so it wouldn't prove anything, but he would not be moved. I think it was more to confirm to myself that I wasn't being scammed, if that makes any sense... So I did what he asked, found out the approximate time of the call (which I guess would have been confirmation it was legit) and called back a couple of hours later, getting a different rep. I went through the same confirm identity process, and then I was ready to continue the previous conversation, but this new rep cut me off, telling me she'd already unlocked my account and approved the flagged transfer... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Although the whole process was a little aggravating, and the prospect of not being able to get the money to where I needed it was worrying, I find it hard to be mad at them, given what happened in this video. It's good know that they're on the lookout for this type of scam, and at least I know that if anyone else does try to get their hands on the money in my bank account, they're not going to have an easy time of it.

It was probably a PITA for you, but at least you know that they care enough to cross their ts and dot their is. I worked in a loan department at a bank. An elderly woman called in, frantic and desperately needing a 2k loan for her grandson because he had gone to a prison in Tennessee and they wouldn't fix his broken arm without 2k. I told her this sounds like a scam, and advised that maybe we could ring up her grandson or his mom (her daughter) to check. She was so freaked out, she wasn't having any of it and started crying before demanding I take the application. We can't legally deny an application, so I did it, asking her to PLEASE call her family while a loan officer reviewed it. The loan partner, the one who funds the loan and sets up the due date and pay schedule also asked her to just TALK TO HER FAMILY first. When she went to the bank to wire it out, she was on the phone (probably with the scammer) and was very paranoid and frantic. It's crazy to believe that, even when you do everything you can, people can still get so in their heads that they wont listen. I get it, she was elderly, incredibly freaked out, and maybe her mind wasnt in tip top shape. What I'm saying is this; those safeguards are in place so that, when you're older and maybe starting to be forgetful and untrustworthy, you will still have a chance to not get scammed. Did any of our warnings and suggestions work? No, they didn't. And we legally cant stop anyone from doing anything with their own money and information. She came in next week, telling us she'd been scammed. We did forgive the loan. The biggest tool your financial institution has to get you to realize it's a scam is adding time, seeding doubt (have you talked to your family about this?) Likewise when I moved FROM the UK, it was a nightmare to transfer money (from a house sale) from my UK account to my Australia account. But like you, I was grateful for how hard it was, even though I had both a house and car purchase waiting for the money. The more checks in place, the better.

Well done, Jim, always love your videos, Question: Who is watching? Answer: IT literate citizens, Question: Who should watch? Answer: Non-IT literate citizens. Please everyone let's tell our senior citizens/anybody not in the loop, let's spread the word, let's stop these thieves. I am calling them thieves as they hate that and scammers is too soft a word.

Many of your videos actually get my heart pounding on whether you'll be able to intervene or not. Talk about a close call. My legs feel weak sometimes (metaphorically) as I watch some of these innocent people following other people's SUPER DODGY instructions to the letter. It's like some people have an "off" switch for common sense when $500 is put on the table. "Oh boy I'm gonna get $500 out of this random unsolicited phone call! Better do everything they saaay!"

Social engineering. Never let yourself think these scammers are idiots just because they're inaccurately diagnosing your device. They know exactly what buttons to push and when in order to soothe suspicions in people who aren't fully aware of the potential danger. They are clever, just not technicians.

@@iProgramInCpp yeah i know ;) It's a silly one for the scammers to pick, but I guess it's also not as it's a known name and many people will think "but I use apple" and be baited in.

Thank you Jim:) Another think I do when they start asking for personal information is say to them they rang me about my account so they should have it and I don't provide it. Then I just tell them I will call the company back and hang up. Then ring the real company.. with the scammers details and report them.
