@@XeroMaverick Interesting. I wonder though how the law works in terms of blackmail and fraud. I imagine it may be very difficult and tricky, but possible. Google or any corporation that bought[owns and created] the gift cards would need to become involved. Tax complications may arise, but ultimately it would likely be sorted out, as long as he had not redeemed or read them aloud of course.
@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley3 жыл бұрын
@Step with Stef But keep in mind, the man said the people already were holding his money ransom. If someone tells me that, I'm going to try to get them to call their bank or the police instead, but sometimes people are insistent on going through with something. And aside from contacting those things, if they say their bank account is being held random, I wouldn't know what else to do. So I too would probably go along with giving them the gift cards, because I'm not sure how else to help them. I'm learning more watching these videos, but it sucks when you're just the customer service person caught between "just doing your job" and feeling something might not be right but not sure how to really help someone in a case like this. Frankly though, a smartphone or a call to the bank would both be your best friends in this case. A smartphone to sign into your bank on another device (update the password to be safe! And indeed, as Jim said, use 2 step verification), and that way you can see the real balance. And calling the bank would help put a stop to everything and lock the account.

Steve - Why don't you ask your boss to put a sign up that you can show them ask them to read it before going through with buying the cards? Every store should have something like that to warn customers of these scams.
@toolateforgot2 жыл бұрын
@@annwithaplan9766 I don't see that in canadian stores. It's like the businesses don't want to take responsibility. All the clerk can do it seems is learn and make judgement calls. In this situation I couldn't convince them in this case that this seems fraudulent until after they came back asking how to recover the money. If I speak about this I just outright tell them no legitimate business would ask for gift cards as payment.

So, the other day I had a situation at work (I work retail and I'll leave it at that). An older lady entered and began looking at our Google gift cards and seemed more confused than anyone going in to purchase a card for themselves. She was on the phone so I figured a grandchild was giving her instructions (not really a red flag to be honest). My first red flag was that she grabbed 6 $100 cards. Now, our store has a limit of $500 so I approached to explain this. After no more than three questions, I realized she was being scammed. She told me Amazon had contacted her about a TV that was purchased and shipped (red flag 1). She then said she was instructed to buy the Google cards to begin a refund process (red flag 2). She also told me she was instructed not to talk to any employee aside from making her purchase (red flag 3). I was seething in anger, not at her, but the gall of this situation. My solution? I told her to hang up the call and explained that I would refuse to let any cashier ring her up because I had reason to believe it was a scam. By the end of my interaction, I placed the cards back on the shelf and stopped this. My point? All retail chains should be trained to recognize this behavior.

We are(hopefully). I work retail too and I was called once by a scammer while at work on the store phone. He said it was a code blue that day, which means nothing and is only there to trick people since it sounds professional. I was alone at work that day and I just kept putting the guy on hold till he yelled at me. Another scammer brought up a green dot prepaid card and wanted 500 on it. Fair enough they're basically debit if you don't like using a bank. However...he showed me his debit card and said "Its a cash card you gotta push F1." Now I immediately thought "How would he know what buttons we push?". What i did was a fun con on the con. I processed the transaction as if he used cash, then immediately canceled and refunded the card and money to my drawer and gave him the worthless card.
