My granddad told me that in WW2 you could identify the enemy very easily by their behavior. If you were met with disciplined rifle fire it was Brits, if it was artillery then you had ran into Americans, if it was heavy machine gun fire you had finally found some Germans. This was almost 80 years ago. So, if you are head to head with a knife wielding enemy something has gone horribly, horribly wrong and you should use the almost 100% reliable, time tested counter to any opponent wielding a knife, and that is a good pair of Nikes.

Most training knife fights descend into a game of tag. Proper knife fighting involves using all your tools, punches, kicks, clinches, etc
@EthansElement7 жыл бұрын
If your kick in a knife fight... you are hands down a fucking idiot. In a knife fight, you should be using feints and swift footwork to create and then exploit openings in your opponents defence. Kicks are so easy to counter, it's stupidly risky to use them in a knife fight unless you have physical control of the enemy's weapon/weapon hand. Put him in a clinch and he'll stab you in the side, stomach, everywhere you're open. If he is quick stab you before you get the clinch on. Why punch when you have a knife to stab? Do you even know what you're talking about?Your free hand should be kept out of the way until you counter to gain control of the opponent's weapon.

+RogueSmurfz Please tell me how kicks are so easy to counter when I could do 1000x2 (each leg) in 20 minutes time at around 2-3 kicks per second without losing focus.
@Userius17 жыл бұрын
+RogueSmurfz Who says I would do a roundhouse kick? I make my kicks direct and sudden. What makes you think your knife is faster than my kicks? In a fight like that you'd likely be using low kicks to begin with. I'm not saying that kicks are the most practical thing in a knife fight, but you sound like you're dismissing them altogether from everything the way you phrased your comment. Let's say it this way: weapon>kick>punch.
@EthansElement7 жыл бұрын
Direct and sudden like what? A front kick? Or a side kick? Both easily dismissible in a knife fight, they aren't hard to dodge, especially if thrown above the waist. But no, in no way did I dismiss kicks altogether, they can be a useful tool in an encounter, especially kicks kept below the waist. (Your comment about my hands/knife possibly not being faster than your kicks is a bit of a joke). Your combo 'weapon>kick>punch isn't bad, but it would only work once if that is all you have in your combo. Maybe you are fast with your legs, but how is your hand work? And your foot work? If your hand work is slow, its easy to work angles to counter, you may not get time to get your kick in. If you are quick all around good for you, but if my defence is better I just have to get your pattern and exploit it. Everybody has a pattern, everyone has an idiosyncrasy that telegraphs their next move, even if it is small.

Of corse. Knife is not a sword a lot of so called "martial artists" forget about that. There''s a reason whyt most combat knives are not very sharp and also they are made from spring steel (that will loose sharpness very quickly). Plus - best combat knife is a dagger - not so good for slashes, but devastating on stabs...
@user-od3yt4tk6t4 жыл бұрын
@@free00to00ryhme The stab is quicker, and more precise. That's why the slash is easier to dodge and block/counter. The slash also leads to over commitment, making it WAY easier to counter

the backslash grip is easier to counter by lunging at the attacker and grabbing and holding the attacker's forearm in a C-grip while attacking the attacker with the other hand, but forward stabs and slashes need to be parried by watching for them and then deflecting them away from your body with your open hand and then you counterattack with your other hand, but unless you want a mutual death, the first step is to do very fast jab slashes to the attacker's knife hand while dancing around to the outside of the attacker to keep distance and outflank them

@Kaydje10 жыл бұрын
After messing around with fake knives and play-fighting as a kid with sticks and paintbrushes I've found that wielding your knife like a fencer (leading hand holds the knife) is the most superior way to "knife fight". You don't really need the power of cocking up a power hand to the rear, you have the ability to just wave that shit around to deter/attack fingers, your weapon is closer to your target, etc.
@kcvanderpool6 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's very true. Also, don't square up like these guys. Stand slightly sideways (but not all the way). Keep knife point directed at opponent at all times. A few inches of reach works wonders. If they're taller than you, if at all possible put as little distance as is safe between, making it harder for your opponent to maneuver. If they're shorter, keep your distance and use your reach advantage to the maximum potential. Also, don't cock back before the swing because either way you won't need TONS of force if stabbing into the abdomen. It just gives your opponent more time to react and counter you, leaving you VERY vulnerable. Pro-tips.
@kpsiex2 жыл бұрын
@@kcvanderpool Left forearm should be over the stomach 99% of the time, this prevents getting disemboweled(this is how duels were won back in the day). you don't need counter balance because you shouldn't be power swinging, your tool is already sharp.

Most Kali instructors will tell you when you have a knife and your opponent has a knife the ice pick or reverse grip is not a good idea as the normal grip gives you more distance, if you are fighting some one who doesn't have a weapon or more than one opponent the reverse would be better because its harder for them to see exactly where your knife is I prefer striking with a back fist motion you get a lot of speed and can use all kinds of trapping moves, also with a normal grip its best to hold the knife with a fist grip because theirs a good chance your going to hit bone however after having said all this most top knife fighters well tell you to run like shit, even if you are very good your chances of getting hurt are great.

The advantage to reverse grip is WAY more power which is something not realized in a sparring match like this. For example a reverse grip stab to the Army guy's lead hand would have likely mangled or disabled that hand. It's much more difficult for a saber grip slash to deal that kind of damage, especially if we start talking about smaller knives (3-4 inch folders) rather than large military fixed blades. At the beginning the IDF guy does attack the hand, but I have a feeling the TV show would not want a fight decided by hand strikes since that would be not nearly as dramatic. In reality though, if you are sane you would always attack the hands/arms first, staying outside as much as possible. If you go for the body and they are at 100%, you are just going to get stabbed yourself. This is also why in knife vs. knife, you do not lead with your empty hand like Army guy does. That's only useful if your opponent doesn't have a knife or won't strike the hand.
@johannes3153 Жыл бұрын
I have seen many videos of knife attacks and all of them held it with the saber grip and nearly all of them first tried to stab the neck. It happens so fast you mist have luck to be able to react to that. I do not think that stabbing the hand of such an attacker is realitic by any means.

The reverse knife position seems like a bad way to fight someone who also has a knife, because it shortens his reach to only as far as his normal punching reach would be, while the american extends his reach with the blade out in front of his hand. It has nothing to do with who's country has better soldiers, the IDF guy just made a very poor tactical decision
@theprogressivecynic24075 жыл бұрын
Not really. Personally, I'm fond of the earth grip when practicing against a heaven grip knife fighter because I will bait them into extending and then deliver a lateral strike across the inside of their wrist/forearm (with real blades, that would damage the tendons and make it much harder for the opponent to continue fighting). Of course, I'm a little biased in that regard because my favored blades are karambit, so I can use the integral ring to whip the blade around clockwise to deliver a long-distance strike with the back edge of the blade.
@ugandanknuckles95955 жыл бұрын
Well, your grip is all based on personal preference. If you train with unarmed or hand to hand combat extensively, the reverse grip can come in very handy, as you would already know the basics. The reverse grip essentially utilizes the same technique and form as a standard hook punch. Meanwhile, the standard grip requires you to learn a whole new way of fighting. I think the biggest mistake of the IDF guy was that he was too defensive, not that he was using the wrong grip. It seemed like he almost refused to attack, meanwhile the US Army guy was extremely aggressive and gave the IDF guy no space to make his moves, and even when he did the IDF guy stayed defensive. You can even see that he switches his grip about halfway through thinking that his grip was his issue, but still falters in his technique.

The reverse hammer grip is wonderful for counterattacks, and it also allows more torque force and speed in alot of slashes. It also allows a downward plunge slash, often lethal. The standard hammer grip that the US Airborne soldier is using isn't as lethal imo, but is perfect for the match situation. Keep in mind these are two very different soldiers.

Well...if you ask me I think in this video they were both untrained with knives. Of course one could say "What da hell do you know about?" - When I was 6 my father which was a veteran to military close combat introduced me to martial arts, such as knife fighting, which was just the beginning. It´s just my opinion - but simply the fact about showing how to catch "points" in knife fighting is not very clever - you will always get injured or die, even if you kill your enemy before you die. Even if you are trained in Krav (I had a few bouts with Krav Maga Instructors) - you die! There is no chance to survive a fierce knife attack if the enemy wants to kill you and has no awareness of himself. Good knife fighters know, that if it comes to a Fight with knives - there is no chance to get out of it with no life threatening injuries - so charge on or retreat! If you decide to charge - expect to die! If you decide to retreat - expect to retreat again! If you expect to die and take some shots - you CAN hit your enemy critical as well. But don´t go for points and expect this shows anything about the Art of fighting with Knives.

@DerSpartaner10 жыл бұрын

Krav is a con game just like most martial arts. It builds your confidence but leaves you with little substance to succeed against a hostile with actual lethal intent.

Then why does the guy in this video suck so bad. This is an IDF guy getting training from the source. I know former 82nd Airborne guys and they are not close to the top of the food chain when it comes to CQB. Krav is nothing but the new Taekwondo in that they marketed it harder than anyone else. Why don't you put up some pictures or vids showing us how effectively you employ what you know about Krav?
@bae31310 жыл бұрын
From Wikipedia: In 1944 Lichtenfeld began training fighters in his areas of expertise: physical fitness, swimming, wrestling, use of the knife, and defenses against knife attacks. Lichtenfeld is the guy who developed Krav, BUT maybe he was wrong and he didn't really teach the use of the knife. Of course your "experts" are probably selling the watered down civilian version. There are several versions. Nice job showing your ignorance on the subject. So what's your experience/ignorance on the IDF? I was seated at a table chatting with three former members the evening of 23 December 2013. I know and associate with several former members as well as a former Krav teacher who subscribes to my page (disillusioned by civilian Krav, he is now studying the special forces version of Krav). Krav's main strength is getting those with little or no fighting experience to an above average level in a relatively short timeframe.
@bae31310 жыл бұрын
You don't know a damned thing. You are just talking out your ass. The reason I check Wikipedia is to fact check before I do what you seem to do very well, which is put your foot in your mouth. What you see those "masters" doing is following a script that has been well rehearsed by all involved. That is nothing like a real fight or even sparring. What the uninitiated (like you), think looks like a real fight is more like a dance. No one is getting hurt, there are no surprises, just choreography. AND you "F"'n idiot, a knife doesn't limit what you can do, it makes you more lethal. The only thing you are proving by continuing this conversation is that you have no martial experience, you have never been in a real fight where someone is trying to break your face, and the dunce cap fits your head perfectly. Now go find a nice dance video to comment on.

bae313 First problem there is you are using Wikipedia as a reference point. Not a good idea. Anybody can change the information on it. You have to remember that this clip is taken from a "reality tv" show. Which is a contradiction. I wouldn't be basing my opinion on it from this kind of bullshit. Like I said though, sounds like you have your mind made up so that's your opinion.

I've seen a few IDF videos but.. I get disappointed most of the time when I see them train or fight. They are very smart about a lot of things, but it seems ground combat is not their specialty. Krav Maga has good techniques, though. But again, it's never really been proven to be effective.
