Mike Janich of Martial Blade Concepts shows the Master Technique, the three basic moves that lay the foundation for effectively using a knife for defense. Notice there is no mention of stabbing. Good knife fighting is about taking away the attacker's ability to fight. That means cutting the muscle groups that allow your attacker to wield a weapon or move effectively.

I'm glad the other gentlemen addressed that military knife fighting techniques It's when your rifle stops, sidearm stops, and you're down to your last tool. A knife is alao employed as a close quarter device should you have to go hand to hand. Yes shooting all the time would be great, blunt force with a rifle would be great. But in the service, we're taught and trained how to use all of our tools that we have available and to always have the will to win

Instead of backing away you should move in especially if it something long being swung at you
@bushwhacker482
@bushwhacker482 3 жыл бұрын
That would be one option. However, then you would be moving to the inside of your attacker, which leaves you open to attack by their other hand... plus their legs which you will now be squarely in front of. You have to keep in mind now the hand with the weapon you are trying to deal with and disarm, and their other hand which you will probably not be able to pay much attention to until you've taken care of the weapon. Allowing the weapon to pass and moving to the outside accomplishes a number of things. It removes the threat of attack from the opposite hand and legs. When your knife meets the flesh of the wrist or forearm on the first cut, you have the combine power of your swing and their swing meeting, the resulting cut will be much more damaging and most likely deeper and longer. Meeting the strike from the inside means you will have to stop/block the strike dead, and then rely only on the power of your own arm to deliver the cut. By stepping outside, you will also immediately be setting yourself up for the follow-up slash to the bicep. With a blade, the flow of movement is everything. The first cut is what we call an Angle 1, at the completion of that cut, your knife hand is naturally positioned to follow up with an Angle 2 or 4 to the bicep area. By moving outside, after you made your cut or cuts, you are now also in position to apply the elbow check as demonstrated. Despite what some of the "experts" in the comments say, elbow checks work very well. By applying constant pressure just above the elbow, you control the limb and are keeping your attacker from being able to redirect their weapon in case your first 2 cuts didn't actually work for some reason. The constant push also keeps them from being able to bring there other hand into play as you are turning their upper body away from you. Turning the body also as the added benefit of turning their hips, which disrupts their stance and takes them off balance. The third cut to the inside of the thigh doesn't have to be directed at that point. The stab could just as well be directed into the front of the thigh and then "comma (C) cut out, to produce pretty much the same disabling effect of that muscle group. Despite what some are saying about needing a larger knife, no, you don't. A two-inch blade will reach just about every major blood vessel and tendon in the human body. The goal in this technique is disable the limb by severing tendons. Once a tendon is cut, it snaps up inside the body and the limb is done for. Its lost some manner of function. The only fix for this is surgery. So tactically, closing inside with your attacker is not ideal with the knife if you can move to the outside. You let them offer you a limb, and you cut that first as far from their body as you can. Then you work your way inward from a safer (outside, with you controlling the attacker as much as possible) position. Chose your targets as they offer them to you and work your way inward: 1) Fingers, Hands, Inside of wrist 2) Inside and outside of forearms 3)Inside of elbow 4) Bicep 5) Armpit Same thing with the legs. In short, whittle them down a bit before stepping in close to go for the body. Cutting the blood vessels in the arms can lead to unconsciousness in 2 to 3 minutes, and to death in 4 to 6 minutes if the bleeding is not controlled. The idea that someone is going to keep fighting for up to 10 minutes in this situation as some said is unrealistic. Most people get real concerned when their limb stops working and they see their blood spurting out of them in a non-stop rush.

@@bushwhacker482 it doesn’t matter much about the other hand if you come in and start stabbing his torso or neck, I’m pretty sure he won’t be thinking to land a basass left hook on you either after swinging his long weapon. you typed a lot of things that only have a small chance of going down that way just like this man, it’s obvious a person with a longer weapon would rather be at a farther distance that gives his the most effectiveness and limits your shorter weapon.saying just do a side step is way harder then doing it lol especially when your adding in a simultaneous strike to their arm. The most practical way you would see people doing somn like this is two swordsman doing a parry then arm cut. attempting to do this on an opponent with a much longer weapon, brings the chances way to low to be consistently attempted.

@bushwhacker482
@bushwhacker482 3 жыл бұрын
@@Handsomeguy-kj2jg Humm... except you're forgetting, before you start your stabbing of his neck or torso, you still have to take care of that weapon that is still coming in at you first, otherwise you still stand a pretty good chance of being clocked before you can start your stabbing. Just because you stepped inside and way from the leading tip of the weapon, doesn't mean you are safe from the butt-end of the weapon. You moving inside only changes my original choice of impact points, I still have other options that will work with the weapon's current flow. Add to this, I also have my other hand, and legs as well that you are willing to ignore. Just because you "think" my other hand is empty, doesn't necessary mean it is either. Sure, you can try rushing inside and it might work. You might get lucky and I don't make the change in time with the longer weapon, And my other hand might actually be empty and waiting with just a punch. Or I can't get a kick off to you nuts in time. There's a lot of "ifs" that can go either way. What is almost a sure bet is letting the longer weapon pass, follow and check, and none of those "ifs" matter because you have the tactically superior position where your opponent is completely open and unable to defend themselves. And by the way, I type a lot of things that are basic knowledge and practice in most bladed system, regardless of origin... or the size of the blade.

I remember back in the 90s when I was a kid I met a man who fought 3 guys at the same time in front of a disco club in my hometown . I didn't see the fight because I was inside the club having fun. But one of my friends who witnessed the confrontation told me that this guy stabbed the 3 bullies and he just got some cuts on her arms.. People in the 90s loved to play with fake knives and challenging themselves who was better avoiding being cut. In this way I think many guys learn how to use a knife in a real aggression. Just memories as a kid. Anything is possible in a fight. In the ring there's a referee. On the streets you're gonna find threats everyhere. Greetings from Colombia South America.

Thank you all for your comments and feedback! I really appreciate it. Please remember that this was intended to be a short demonstration of one of the key skills in MBC; it does not represent the entire content of the system. Do we have tactics for left handers? Yes. Do we also teach techniques to stay inside the arc of the strike? Yes. Do we teach techniques for folks who don't have the mobility to evade the strike and must stay inside to block it? Yes. Can we fit all those into a five-minute video? Unfortunately not. On the positive side, we do have a complete instructional series on the Martial Blade Concepts system. A little Google-fu and I'm sure you'll find it easily. Thanks again for your feedback! Stay safe, Mike

Your average person is clumsy and slow. What has mentioned to be said is this; you can train this combination/counter attack till the it's engrained in you like breathing, but the amount of variables that you could run into are many. Humans are unpredictable when driven to acts of violence, whether it's motivated through fear, anger, jealousy, passion, you name it, you should always expect the unexpected. Your most useful tool's in a situation that's turned confrontational are going to be, awareness and violence of action. Know when your opportunity presents itself and capitalize on that opportunity, you have to think and move on the fly, because chances are your adversaries will be acting unpredictably.

Good technique but it reminds of the old joke "How to be a millionaire and not pay taxes: first, get a million dollars." The first part of this technique is the hardest, and it's really hard. Getting out of the way is so much easier said than done. It requires advanced training and has nothing to do with knives. Until you can master the timing and movement to get out of the way, you can forget about that lightning fast arm slash. And there's no amount of solo practicing that will get you there. You must train with a partner and build up to full speed with real knocks on the head when you don't get out of the way.

As a student of Filipino Martial Arts, I enjoyed this demo. I feel like I should point some things out though. These are great techniques but they take a lot of training to get them right. Note how the first cut is to the forearm as the attacker is swinging a tire iron. If that swing is full speed I guarantee you'll be backing up and trying to get the hell of out dodge. He continues moving forward with the second cut to the tricep combined with checking the elbow. In a real life confrontation that can be difficult to pull off. In all the chaos you may miss the tricep cut or the elbow check completely. The third cut is to a rather specific area, just above the knee. Again, in the chaos of the fight you may miss low and glance off the shin or kneecap or you may miss high, which could lead to cutting the femoral artery which is fatal. However that may be the intention, to end the fight permanently. There are also legal implications. Using a knife tends to be looked down upon in court as opposed to using a gun. It may sound strange, but the knife just has bad connotations. Serial killers use knives because they like the intimacy of it - they are up close and able to see first hand every bit of damage they are causing. If you use a knife a jury may see you as being in the same position. A gun puts distance between you and the attacker. In short, I think you should avoid using a knife at all cost for self defense. It's messy and up close and personal. But if it's the only option you've got left these techniques, with a good amount of training, will definitely get the job done.

Lots of interesting comments. The one thing, these techniques are basics for several blade systems. They have been around and have worked for several centuries, for a number of different blade cultures. Blade on blade fighting is a slightly different animal, but for this topic, I will stick to the knife defense against a club/tire iron scenario presented in the video. Many seem to like the idea of stepping into the attack with a club-like instrument instead of stepping away. Yes, that would also be one option on how to handle this scenario. Keep in mind that the technique demonstrated here is only one of many possible responses. However there are things to also consider then you move to the inside of your attacker, which leaves you open to attack by their other hand... plus their legs which you will now be squarely in front of. You have to keep in mind now the hand with the weapon you are trying to deal with and disarm, and their other hand which you will probably not be able to pay much attention to until you've taken care of the weapon. Just because your attacker is using a weapon, doesn't mean they also won't be employing their empty hand, elbows, knees and feet at the same time as well. Allowing the weapon to pass and moving to the outside accomplishes a number of things. It removes much of the threat of attack from the opposite hand and the legs. The first cut is what we call an Angle 1, at the completion of that cut, your knife hand is naturally positioned to follow up with an Angle 2, 4, or 10 to the bicep area. By moving outside, after you made your cut or cuts, you are now also in position to apply the elbow check as demonstrated. Despite what some of the "experts" in the comments say, elbow checks work very well. By applying constant pressure just above the elbow, you control the limb and are keeping your attacker from being able to redirect their weapon in case your first cuts didn't actually work for some reason. The constant push also keeps them from being able to bring their other hand into play as you are forcing their upper body to turn away from you. Or you can chose a completely different target, as the elbow check will have opened up a number of target to you. The idea that someone is going to keep fighting for up to 10 minutes in this situation as some have said is unrealistic. Most people get real concerned when their limb stops working and they see their blood spurting out of them in a non-stop rush.

I appreciate this. There’s been an increase in dog napping where someone approaches you in a friendly manner, you chat a bit, then goes for the lead and tries to take your dog. There a many videos demonstrating how it happens. Sometimes they have backup that joins in the fight and you lose your dog forever. Lose them for their next fix, or for pennies as a bait dog, or big bucks to a dog napping ring. Statistics show that in most cases, you will never see your dog again. Children allowed to walk their pets must be taught to be vigilant, even unfriendly. It’s more common than we think. Most of the missing pets’ on flyers tacked on lamp posts are not runaways, they are stolen. It’s big business. I want to learn these knife techniques because I may need to protect my dog one day. I would love to see a video on someone like me, an elderly woman being attacked while holding a leash with a medium sized dog. I have only one free arm. Do I bring my dog closer to me, or put distance between us? I’ve read to drop the leash so he can run, and they’d have to catch him. Not easy. This video helps me, but not sure I would have the upper strength to wield the knife at the biceps. Hurts just to raise my arm 😂 and I’m in great shape. I walk my dog a lot. We sit in the park, at the beach, and mostly alone. I am vigilant, and stay within earshot of a house or person. But at the beach the other day, My dog and I were the only ones there. I ordinarily would have loved it, but I felt vulnerable because of her. I could never protect her in that situation, so I left.

To my understanding of Anatomy, I agree with (andresec100), from watching the video, it looked like if that knife was real it would nick or cut the femoral artery, which is a major artery and it can take just minutes to bleed out and cause death. I know there are laws that can protect you if you end up killing your attacker in self-defense. To be realistic, you will have to prove that in court and that is not an easy thing to always do, especially if you were trained on cutting that area that would indicate you knew you were providing a lethal cut that can cause death. I'm not saying that you should not defend yourself, but to keep in mind your actions could have a negative effect in court, this is something we should be aware of with any form of self-defense.

Janich has taken a whole lot of techniques from various places and integrated them. He is quite open about this in his videos. He did invent the system that he teaches, and the teaching methodology. But he regularly gives credit to the original systems. It is a synthesis of different systems, although he does modify some stuff, like his instinctive hubud. As far as I know that is his own. It is also more modern in the way it uses bio-mechanical cutting, rather than some purely lethal techniques. I have no problem with what he does and what he says about it.

At 3:35 why wouldn't you just stab them in the throat or eye socket. The person just swung a lethal weapon at you and is still a threat. because in this situation, attacking a large incoming target, like an arm, is easier and safer to do than to enter and try to hit a small target like the eye. If you are already inside and can easily hit the eye, by all means do so, but entering specifically trying to hit a point target is not good tactics. you go after big targets with a high probability of getting a hit.

Edward Hellwig Then there is a simple modification to cover that. He just covered what would be the first three attacks in a simple system with the next three to cover the left side.

Run away? Throw your girlfriend at him and then run away? Orr.. Flip the knife to ice pick grip, as his arm comes down lean/step to the outside of his strike, use your left hand to trap the wrist and deflect/push his arm/weapon away.. at the same time bring your right arm straight across your body from right to left across his arm slicing his cubital fossa (arm crook, inside elbow) now you should be in a strong stance, with his arm pulled uncomfortably across his body off balace and arm sliced open, while your knife is in prime position to gut-stab, back slice his throat or bicep in a quick retracting motion or continue to force him forward onto the ground with your knife at his throat to subdue him. Then you throw your girlfriend at the cops and say "She did it! She sliced this dudes Cubital Fossa! She's a monster! Arrest her!" ... and run away.

Prepper 101 You are trying to incapacitate them, Then turn them in to authority's rather than. Kill them though you would be justified.

with a tire iron or anything with weight, that strike will most probably crash through whatever block you will have.

the logic is key , wonderfully put. you cant just stab someone in self defense or go for a throat shot, it's inexcusable..., anyone can be immobilized....unless they have a gun. treat it like any other sport , practice makes perfect....look at mike...flawless like a symphony

Reminds me of training my SIFU taught years ago. Advanced self defense past the regular animal Kung fu styles. Still remember and appreciate the muscle memory training, 65 , aging, but still got it 😎
