Just added a WW2 to my '93 F-250 with (currently) a Factory Turbo 7.3 IDI.
After this test, I did some romping on it and now it boosts a couple PSI more - it may have just needed to tighten everything up a bit. Haven't taken it out for a long drive yet, though.
Edit 1/21/2019: She's still doing fine. Turbo sings, still not as good as a Banks, but better than pre-WW2. Still have a motor with a lifter tick, which may well be hurting flow, but as long as it keeps starting up nicely in the morning and doing everything I need it to, I'm not ready to fix/modify it.

If you have the wastegate tube disconnected like that you’re just releasing boost pressure. You have to keep it hooked up. just crimp the hose.
@groundtogreen1140
@groundtogreen1140 6 жыл бұрын
Did you wire the waste gate lever so it actually stays shut? Just unhooking will still open it. You should be hitting 25 easy with a friggin 110 lots of guys on a stock idit pump have hit over 20.

Might also have a massive boost leak check and see if the up pipes are sealed well

@@groundtogreen1140 do you think it's safe if your not studded? I dont wanna get a stage 1 turbo from R&D but I do want a little more power and boost...and if i did get it should i install how he did it or take the turbo out to do it?

Ryan Paetz Stock idit shouldn’t push anymore than 14-15. Chances of blowing a head gasket are very likely. Get after market headstuds along with the turbo. APR headstuds on the R&D site will work great. I disconnected my wastegate and I push about 11-13psi

its not boosting more than 12psi because its got an internal wastegate ( they all leak when pushed too much), external ftw!

Are you running head studs with that pump and injectors?
@MacRobbSimpson
@MacRobbSimpson 9 ай бұрын
No, I am not. I have head studs in a different rig, the high-HP one with a bigger than stock turbo, but the head gaskets will hold fine with bolts and a reasonable 200-250RWHP. The one thing that will kill them, though, is overheating the motor, especially after many years.

Hello just wanted to throw it out there I had the same issue for awhile more boost is no help unless you want a money pit. But if you can part shop and or have a buddie that knows what's up to help set up a intercooler on it that's the route I went. More boost is nice but a damn good intercooler is were it is. Denser air with the boost. Denser air makes more power.
@maxdavis8995

With less smoke more efficient and better feul. Added with a nice pump that alone can get better results then just throwing more boost at it
@MacRobbSimpson

After seeing the video Gale Banks has put out recently, I am inclined to agree with you. Dropping the temperature makes a *huge* difference. And on the other rig with the turbo making 27 PSI of boost... well, with a good intercooler, I should be able to double the available air easily enough... More fuel and more power! I'm kind of thinking that this setup(factory turbo, probably with ww2) plus a decent intercooler might well be good for 300rwhp, when pared with a 'moderate upgraded' IP like the RD2-110. Get a 150 or 180 for my high-power truck and put the 110 on my DD again.

What’s your favorite exhaust set up sounds different then mine I have factory down pipe to a 4 inch straight pipe
@MacRobbSimpson
@MacRobbSimpson 4 жыл бұрын
My favorite one(so far) is the cheapest - I just took the stock pipes and cut the muffler out. All the bends and curves in the pipe /signifigantly/ reduce noise at most speeds and load levels - at idle, you can't really tell. I do get that popping/crackle on decel at 2200-2800 RPM or so, something the flow-through muffler on my '88 got rid of. One of these days I may upgrade; I can see using 3" or 4" pipe, and a non-crushed downpipe... but for a stock IP, it's not needed at all.

You have to have leaks and I'm not sure why you disconnected the battery for mechanical parts.
@MacRobbSimpson
@MacRobbSimpson 2 жыл бұрын
Leaks - no, as far as I can tell, I don't; there is no soot buildup around various areas, which even a small leak would produce. And no smoke on startup from places other than the tailpipe. I'm still not quite sure the issue, but one cylinder is /not/ right. The motor still "taps" a bit, same as it did a few years back; not worse or better. When I eventually tear it down, I will probably find something horrible lol. (I'm thinking valvetrain or camshaft). As for disconnecting the battery, I likely did it because of the position of the glow plug controller, which is right there on the passenger side valve cover on a factory turbo model. This makes it very easy to short with a tool, and I get annoyed with the sparks.

Do all idis have that crackle at the end when floored ?
@MacRobbSimpson
@MacRobbSimpson 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on whether you have a muffler. No muffler = crackle on decel. Any muffler, even a straight-through glasspack? Really gets rid of it. The first time I heard it on a different truck after not having the muffler was very surprising; I thought something was wrong. I realized it's just some sort of harmonic in the exhaust, and it only happens at a certain RPM range(mainly around 2000-2600 or so)

The #3 rod snapped clean in half about 18 months ago - after the last video was posted. It failed right on cold start. Both bearings were perfect and still moved freely, even 18 months later when I took the motor apart. I've got a new block for it, and going to pick up heads from Typ4/Russ Repair in Newberg, OR, along with a Torque Cam. If I can swing it, I'd like to get it together and running before September 8th and take it to Hunting 4 Horsepower and make some power!

I sure hope you've got headstuds in there. And then, get a proper pump - probably a RD4-150 to match that boost. Otherwise, it's all just wasted boost that isn't helping make power.

@@MacRobbSimpson Yeah I need to get a bigger pump It is studded and also on stock compression Justin at r&d said to not go any bigger than the 90 cc pump I will be adding an intercooler And it's also 6.9 with 4 speed I average 17-18 mpg with 3.55 gears

@@Redneckkid-hl3ty Being a 6.9, yeah. That kind of sucks. The sad part is honestly, the 6.9 is mostly a 'better' motor than a 7.3 - more cylinder wall meat, and they seem to run smoother for some reason. But, those 7/16 studs are the limiter, dangit! Hopefully within a year or so I'm going to mod a 6.9 block and upsize to 1/2" if not 9/16" bolts, to see if I can do it. I just need to find the time...
