This movie was bubblegum jukebox "musical" theater, for audiences that don't understand, or appreciate Musical Theater. But never fear Musical Theater fans, Queen Menzel saves the movie with the best arrangement for Material Girl the world has ever heard. There is no doubt that Idina had a hand in the conception of this number. From the ography, to the vocal arrangements, this is truly a stage act. When Idina pauses for speaking lines, the Theater nerd in me swoons.

I was so happy whenever Idina was on screen because otherwise I would notice every single flaw, the weird camera work (is as if they were trying to be Moulin Rouge, but didn't work because the energy of the story was not appropiate for that direction style), the weird musical choices and careless attention the voices of certain singers (we all know who).

I agree that it’s bubblegum jukebox, and I agree that “musical” needs to be put in quotes with this one. At the same time, if you want to break it down technically, a story in which music, song and dance is used to help advance the plot, reveal character thoughts and motivations, and musically illustrate the story, well, this kinda checks all the boxes. And you can most certainly understand and appreciate musical theater (thank you for using the “er” spelling, btw, which I appreciate!) and enjoy this. But you do have to be in the right mind space for it, and watching with the right group of friends with whom you can laugh at the silliness does help. And I agree that Idina Menzel was far and away the best thing about this!
