What I love about this film is that it was created in a pre-social media age. This was made in 2005. Facebook was only set up in 2004. Twitter in 2006. The iPhone wouldn't be invented until 2007. Tiktok and Instagram were unthinkable yet in 2005. And yet, this movie captures the idiocy of the digital age with horrifying precision. The screens. The poor English. The consumerism. I think of this every time I see an iPad kid. Every time I see a stadium getting renamed for a corporate sponsor. Every time I see a person abuse apostrophes on Facebook. It's only been 19 years and I think we're already halfway there.

Most underrated line has to be, "Let's meet our rehabilitation officers for tonight.....with a combined record of SIXTY TWO KILLS!" Likely leftovers from before the population became too dumb. The opening states that there were still scientists creating stuff even when the average intelligence was hitting dangerously low levels so they likely advanced technology to a certain point, enough to automate nearly everything, but those people either didn't have children or their children became dumb from living in a world populated with idiots so after that there was nobody smart enough to maintain machinery or create anything new which is why all the machinery looks like it hasn't been maintained in centuries.

They ended up becoming geniuses and ended up leaving some of these machines behind. 1. It would explain why this dumb population have some high tech stuff throughout the movie and 2. It would create an entertaining war between 1 avg guy with a huge army of idiots vs a small group of geniuses with awesome machines.
@leonardpearlman40172 ай бұрын
This is treated in some detail in "The Marching Morons", a jolly short story along these lines. Guy from the 20th Century wakes up in an America full of shocking boneheads.... There is a small core of smart and well-educated people who keep things going, they all have eight jobs. They keep the moron society going b/c they don't know what else to do, and they dread the idea of mountains of dead rotting people. It's not easy for them btw and there's only so much they can do! In the end they decide to systematically kill off all the regular citizens, which is a big job and takes awhile. It's worth reading! The movie got an unrealistically happy ending. Joe is not that smart! He can't save those people, even as President. He doesn't know anything! As it happens, plants REALLY DO "crave" electrolytes! We call this "fertilizer" now. I love this movie so much that when I'm watering stuff, I put green dye in the water (and some fertilizer. I HAVE what plants crave!) and feel a little better. I got a "Brawndo" sticker online, and stuck it on the watering can. What they need in The Future there isn't water from toilets, it's BRAWNDO for PLANTS! I think you can buy this anywhere, now.
