Very much appreciate your commentary on the workings of the Horse Guards. Having tried to guess the process by watching as many as available, generally leave unfulfilled in much beyond the basics. I do find that the support personnel are somewhat erratic in their duties, i.e, not securing the rear box gates, not securing the side gates to the yard before the changeover consistently. We as viewers do not see all the behind the scenes duties performed and so must-give a little leniency to them. It is too bad the tourist seem to not have any appreciation for the history they see here and the potential present for disaster from all quarters.

Great show today, and thanks so much for the informative commentary! I saw a woman early on enter next to the Life Guard then walk to the rear of the box and lean over to look in. I wonder what she thought...yep..that's a horse bum. That one was watching you too while you were hiving us a nice commentary. Surprised me the teacher didn't ask the Life Guard if it was safe for the child to pet the horse. Lucky it wasn't Ormonde. Bit of cool info about the guard's requirement to remain stoic. They are allowed to smile when interacting with children. I thought that was cool. Those Life Guards and their horses leaving were absolutely magnificent.

Thanks for the commentary. Much better than just silently watching a stream of ignorant tourists striking ridiculous poses for the camera. She was really smart to walk up behind a horse wasn’t she? Was walking through the gate just a short distance away too complicated for her? She’s lucky she wasn’t kicked back into the yard by a couple of powerful back legs with iron shod hooves attached. Some people really shouldn’t be allowed out without the supervision of a responsible adult. I think I spotted Ormonde during the change over with that distinctive blaze which looks like a bunched fist with the thumb sticking out to the the horse’s right and what looks like a “dribble” coming from under the nose band on the left plus the three white socks. That should be fun eventually when it’s Ormonde’s turn to do a stint in the box watching some tourists collecting horsey teeth marks as one of their souvenirs of London. Not fun for them maybe but it might teach them to have more respect for a 17hh almost 1000kg horse when he makes it very clear they’re invading his space. Some might try a polite head butt first but Ormonde tends to go straight to the more assertive action. But when the ears go back and the head starts nodding they ignore those obvious signs of irritation at their peril.

The majority, if not all of these horses will be geldings, as mares can be temperamental, ( Hence referring to someone as being mare-ish)! And they use Irish Draught or Irish Draught crosses, They are known to be a reasonably calm breed, taking things in their stride and have to be, as they call it "up to weight", large horses to take the weight of a Trooper with their regimental kit. (Can you imagine if they used thoroughbred horses?! 😂) Btw, the average Irish Draught horse weighs in at between 1300 and 1500 pounds...so, an even bigger kick!

@@libradragon934 He probs knows much more than I do but I bet he's learning like me by posts from people like you. I wish I had taken the time when I was younger to learn more regarding horses but there was and is so much to learn in my specialty that I stuck mostly to that. Horses are magnificent, hilarious with some having a wonderful sense of humour. It's awesome to see those large dignified horses suddenly do something silly. My sis had a quarter horse who'd run to my mom's, stick her head in an open window to grab mom's glass of ice tea she'd set on a counter while she was busy. That horse had a cool personality. I'm so glad there are quite a few knowledgeable people like you willing to share. Oh, I was reading about the colors of the horses used and what that meant and the types of horses used for different duties..all fascinating! For me, learning about something I have always had an interest in is fun. Now I keep searching the internet for more info on these and other horses. Thanks!

Just wanted to say thanks for sharing videos of London. As for the lady with the bags, I'm surprised that she didn't get caught by the Life Guard as she sneaking her way behind the horse. She put herself at risk and also the horse and guard. This is pretty cool to watch and the horses are beautiful. Just a question, how long does King's Guard stay in the box? Do they get to have a snack while on duty?

Each guard and his horse, whether it’s the Life Guards in the red jackets, the Blues & Royals in the blue jackets or the Royal Horse Artillery whose jackets have all the gold frogging, only go in the sentry box for an hour at a time. The horses may get a drink during that hour on really hot days but there’s no drinking or snacking for the guard. He’s a soldier on guard duty in full ceremonial uniform - he not just some actor in costume sitting there as a photo op for tourists and tucking into a picnic while he does.

I cannot wait for the day when one of those tourists who decides to walk through the box gets both barrels from a horse. Not that it would help but a sign telling future tourons that it is out of bounds to them might help. If they add that no accountability is held for resulting injuries that might do it.

The horses of the Household Cavalry, known as Cavalry Blacks, are a mandatory minimum of 16.2 hands high at the withers (top of the shoulder where the mane begins - that's 66-68 inches or a height of 5 foot 6-8 inches! - officers’ chargers should be at least 17 hands high and preferably completely black with no white markings - this horse at 17.2 hands is 6 foot tall at the withers!! Thank You for the excellent commentary of a day beginning at Horse Guards, even though I have watched thousands of videos of Horse Guards this was excellent to watch and listen to Sir. The inevitability of something happening in a second there is always what I enjoy, that totally oblivious woman walking through the Horse Box was not only dangerous to herself The Guard and The Horse but totally disrespectful. At least you got her face so I do hope she feels like the idiot she was, though I doubt it as she obviously has no manners or sense. Always an adventure there as the massive crowds descend and that is when I truly feel for the Box Guards having to deal with so many crowding the face of the Horse trying to outdo each other petting the face or sides watching the Guards eyes swivel from one side to the other and having to be on constant alert. Hello John. We just wanted you to know that your videos are so enjoyable. You are very knowledgeable of the royal military as well as incredibly informant of all aspects of the events to come presented by the royal military. Yes we so agree that some of the Tourists are definitely idiots and can be very disrespectful. It is ashame that these soldiers of all ranks have worked and trained very hard to achieve their careers and have the honour of working for the King and the Common Wealth nations.I am so glad when the solders and officers put people in there place when acting to rude and disrespectful. Please keep up your great work.

I think that you should tell off the people who do wrong. In this case, you had plenty of time to stop her, or at least let the guard know so he could stop her going through.

In all honesty, my function is to document what I see and provide a narrative... not to 'Police' tourist behaviour. I have zero authority (or desire) to do that. 🙏🏻

If he was to "Tell people off" as you say he would have no time to video anything it would be a full time job there are so many that need telling off 😉

Not much point by then anyway. Once she was in that box the LAST thing you would want to do is startle the horse, cos the chance of an unfortunate squish is pretty high. I DO think the cops should have stopped her on the other side tho. But that’s easy to say…..there’s a LOT of people in the yard at any one time.

What I do like about John and his videos is we all get to know what is happening, plus we feel like we are walking round the area ourselves. There are others who do videos but never do any commentary, making it hard for the people who have never watched a video to know what is happening. So try to watch videos done by John of LondonCityWalks, they are more informative.

It’s surprising that either the police officers or foot guard do not stand both in and out of the courtyard to avoid such dim-witted people do not attempt to walk behind horse & guard. A true miracle that the horse did not react, though I realize they are well-trained.

I didn't realize how much i liked ypur commentary until i kust watched a few other channels. They dont talk and all that ypu hear are the tourist's yalking lsughing etc. I found it extremely annoying and boring tbh. You are stuck withe John. I love your channel. It's the best one ive found and i watched manu. Thankyou for all you do for us.

How some of these people manage to negotiate a city street without killing themselves is totally beyond me!! You do NOT, EVER, EVER walk up behind a horse you do not know without warning to the horse, particularly when the horse is in a constricted space. She’s lucky she didn’t get her brains booted clear thru her skull. I really hate to think how powerful a double barrel from a horse that size would be(I know it’s hard enough to break a hip tho cos I’ve seen it happen). I’ve been double barrelled by a yearling and it knocked me flat and left me winded on the floor for several minutes, gasping like a landed fish.(just to clarify, I didn’t walk behind him, I was feeding him in the paddock, and he backed round because he thought another horse in a different paddock was after his grub before nailing me lol….ahh the joys of horses)

@tammybearden4270. Those in red uniforms with white plumes are Lifeguards , in dark blue uniforms with red plumes are The Blues and Royals they are the two regiments of The Household Cavalry both have a long proud history . If you'd like to know more Google Household Cavalry there's lots of information about the regiments , uniforms , ranks .

Walking through the box is not only stupid, but Lazy! They literally don’t want to walk that extra couple of feet to the actual gate! It’s also extremely dangerous to walk up behind a horse they could spook and kick out. Just because your at the side doesn’t mean you are safe, they can “cow kick” which means they can kick to the side!

thank you for the commentary. new subscriber. Would you happen to know the name of the all black horse whose only white marking is a tiny dot on forehead between the eyes. His memorable trait is his penchant for dangling his tongue and being affectionately mouthy.
