What's interesting about the scene of the Collector "forgiving" Belos is that while yes, it is played for tragic comedy and to establish that Belos is NOT getting redeemed, what a lot of people don't talk about is that it's a very powerful gesture from the Collector. Because it wasn't an empty one- Belos straight up used and manipulated the Collector for 400 years. Then he dropped him into a hole to rot for the rest of eternity. That kid is the pawn that has been abused and betrayed by Belos for the longest. But even if he doesn't fully understand what Luz was getting at, he wants love and friendship so much that he is willing to set that betrayal aside and forgive, because that's what she said is the right thing to do. It was a pretty compressed moment in the actual episode for obvious reasons, but I can easily imagine that in better circumstances we might have seen the Collector directly bring all of this up when "forgiving" Belos.

I think the intent of the bluebird palismen was to represent kind of an inflection point in Hunter's life. The bluebird has visual similarities to cardinals, so it's like an homage that Hunter made to Flapjack. But the bluebird also has substantial differences in recognition that it's not flapjack, and isn't just a replacement for flapjack, but a new relationship for Hunter. So it's sort of a "honor the past while moving forward" sort of thing. In this way, it also could be interpreted as a contrast with Phillip's long chain of expendable replacements for Caleb, of which Hunter was a part, and so demonstrates Hunter's moral superiority in that way.

Blue Jay's symbolize 'new beginnings' as they help in invoking confidence and discovering ones true self. It makes sense for Hunter as his entire story is about becoming a full person instead of a tool. It honors Flapjack, while giving Hunter the ability to start a new in his new life on his terms. It's such a beautiful and gentle choice, I love it so much.

The way I evaluate this show and its publisher situation is mostly directed at Disney. There is no getting around it: Disney failed Dana Terrace and the show's crew by almost every metric. In today's media landscape, *especially* in animation, the context of corporate fuckery and publishers' relationship to creatives cannot be divorced from the final product. Netflix failed Dead End by cancelling it on a cliffhanger. HBO failed Summer Camp Island by basically erasing the show from on-demand existence before its final season could debut. Disney failed The Owl House with one executive's decision to drastically cut down the show's run before a whole season had aired. And that decision affected all of Season 2 and the Season 3 specials, because the crew were forced to suddenly change directions to make it work. Even independent shows, like Helluva Boss, need to be evaluated in the context of their environment. Season 1 is only 7(ish) episodes, which would be a tiny run by most metrics, but as an independent venture on KZbin, with all of that platform's problems, what SpindleHorse has made is an incredible accomplishment. So yeah, just like you touch on here, you can't properly evaluate shows like The Owl House without taking that context into consideration, because the corporate fuckery in the publishing house affected the final product just as much as any of the writers did. Evaluating the show in a vacuum unfairly minimizes their accomplishments.

I kind of saw the blue bird as a way for hunter to take back the power that oppressed him. blue is associated with belos and now his palisman is a blue bird, he is free from his abuser, flapjack is gone but not forgotten. so the blue jay kind of encompassing acceptance, moving on and being empowered for hunter. maybe sortof idk xD

Theres a specificity to Belos saying "cleanse this perdition" that i like. In many ways i feel like the draconic/demonic form highlights his place as a hypocritical moralizing monster. He's a literal puritan striking out at people he deems impure or even inhuman. He's a colonizer, he conquers a realm and seeks to make himself their god, he is a literal demiurge. Man becomes demon, demon becomes ghoul, ghoul becomes dragon. He forsakes his humanity, he forsakes his dignity, and he forsakes his lies about what he is. He is a dragon, he comes to burn this realm to the ground.

@idlescree I'm amazed frankly they got that much specificity in under the mouse. Yes, they never say the words puritanical evangelical Christian, but they are gushing with symbolism and historical context to place him firmly there. The only thing I can imagine that they drip fed it slowly enough that you had to see it coming to cover up the component pieces. Yeah he's a witch hunter and not a witchfinder, yeah they never say puritan or pilgrim, but considering the standards and practices bullshit Alex Hirsch had to put up with for GF, I can easily see an alternate version of the owl house where they went out of their way to make the witch trial imagery all dudes in cloaks and shunt it to more of an ahistorical weird witch hunting cult. Hell, there's an excuse baked right in, earth has its own titan trapper cult that hates witches.

To answer your question about the bluebird* for hunter, when a bluebird and cardinal are seen together in nature it symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. So having his two Palismen being two halves of that symbolism is him reaching maturity and becoming a whole individual and that he wouldn't have been able to reach that without Flapjack. I teared up when I saw his second Palisman because I knew that symbolism (;~;) It means Flapjack is still a part of his life and that he's found his purpose in life and sense of self. *I have been corrected that her name is Pancakes and she's a Blue Jay but the symbolism is the same, I'm just tired today

Someone probably already mentioned this but the first word in each special spell out Thanks For Watching, and that kinda sums up how well this did. Even with the set backs and such it gave people the emotional pathos that is needed to define a good, even great, finale. It was a sentimental love letter to the series trying to convey this beautiful raw emotion that the crew and fans had, and from all of your emotional responses in the reaction, I'd say it hit home. Will it always be sad we didn't get everything we wanted? Yes, of course but that doesn't lessen what we did get and kinda makes it so much more special because for what it is and what we got? A gem to love for years. Final side thing though, say what you will about him but Belos' voice, savagery, and dragon form gets him a pass into the Disney villain Hall of Greats, Lord help us if he and Maleficent square off because no one will come out unscathed. Though we take great satisfaction in that his Witch Hunter holier the thou self got merced first possibly by Luz summoning the boiling rain and then being stomped out by a bisexual disabled Witch, with her Non-Binary SO, and her adopted Furry son, glorious :)

People felt weird about Belos dragon but I fine with that--the whole show is such an explicit rebuke of a certain set of hypocritical values that it seemed like a fitting and natural thing. It wasn't even Belos, it was his cancerous expression on the Titan's physical heart. I think Belos deserves a seat at that table of great villains and frankly some of them would be taking notes. He's as campy, over the top and despicably evil as the worst of them and I adore him for it XD Thanks for your thoughtful comment!!!!

@@idlescree Your welcome! And full agree on your points, his mindset was a venomous thing that was going to poison and destroy everyone on the Boiling Isles born from a stubbornness and pride mixing with the flawed thought that Witches were monsters that needed to be destroyed when they were very similar to us. All this on top of his selfish want to be the Savior of Humanity from these blasphemous heretics? It was a dream come true to him, as in his mind he would be remembered for all time as this great Warrior of God who cleansed reality of these unclean wretches. His over the top way of things was entertaining to watch but when he let out glimpses of the real monster underneath, and the context clues we got about him through Hunter, that's enough to leave someone chilled to the bone, "Okay, I'll play" will always stay with me as a great showing of his sheer menace mixed with a sort of sadistic campiness.

39:22 exactly!!! everything you brought up before this is *crucial* when talking about this season and what went down, and the main thing is, most of the finale was the closest to greatness as they could've gotten to considering the circumstances. with that being said, my only real gripe with the finale that i really would've liked to be different (or atleast had been showcased more in depth or something) was the Collector's send-off. it was really one note and honestly felt really unfair to me how literally everyone (other than Belos LMAO KEEP THAT GUY DEAD) got their happy ending while the Collector went back to the stars. it doesnt really strike me as a decision coming from a place of newly found maturity so much as self-guilt and resentment for his actions, and the line "no one argued" felt really out of character for Eda, Luz and King, considering how much they went through with this kid. Not to mention that this is the only place they've ever felt welcome and the only place where they've been able to grow as a person in a meaningful way. I could go on about this but I'll probably just end up repeating myself, lol. this in particular bugged me because (for reasons i won't get into) i really resonate with the Collector and see a lot of myself in them. even before season 3 i just wanted them to have an actual family and real friends. so i felt (and still feel) pretty conflicted about the fact that they went with this ending for him. Considering that the show's message of found family, then the show having this character who reflects that theme in their role as an antigonist perfectly, and then leaving him on his own again after all the suffering they went through feels illogical to me. Sorry i for how long this is LMAO i know it's not that related to everything else but i thought i'd bring it up considering that (like you've said) the showrunners got put through literal HELL with all of this and how they handled it was about the closest to what they wanted to do that they could get. i don't really know what else to say lol ^^

I also love the cute little critters each of you have to represent you. Good fun channel with cute avatars and interesting character analysis. Also I think I really need to rewatch Owl House again. It's been a while and these videos are a good reminder why I loved it so much. Also I definitely did not almost cry during the Hunter video, nope. Definitely did not get emotional at how deeply traumatized that poor boy has been, and how admirable it is that he overcame that trauma and grew stronger. Edit: Just to add some thoughts because I can't help myself lol, I love that The Collector ended up being a fair bit different than I expected. I like that he's childishly ignorant rather than malicious. Flesh dragon Belos also makes me think of some Final Fantasy mixed with Resident Evil type final boss thing. Also the Titan's "I am both king and queen, best of both things" line along with his true form being another massive being with an incomprehensible nature also definitely feels very eldritch. Especially with how he's actually been alive all this time while his body decayed. Also the fact that the Collector we know is just the child version of a species is actually terrifying. I also love how Owl House starts the "the hero and villain aren't so different" thing only for the Titan to immediately shut that down and point out that their intentions make a world of difference. It's funny, but also just nice to see a character in universe break down the difference. And finally Luz's Titan form is adorable and I love it. It's a shame that form is so short lived lol

Interesting conversation at the end about how to evaluate a series that's been done dirty. I know so little about how much work and (especially) time goes into the process of putting together an animated series like this. When I watched s3e1, I was kind of confused and a bit let down; I wanted to see most of that episode be what that opening six-minute montage was. I don't think Luz and Willow spoke a single word to each other the whole episode. And yet, there were really, really important character moments for Hunter and Luz and CAMILA. Similarly in s3e2, after the initial watch, I felt underwhelmed. Some good moments, but it just didn't have penultimate finale tension energy and momentum. Now in retrospect, I see some of the beats they were trying to hit, and I can enjoy both these episodes for what they were. S3e3 was almost flawless on any rubric imaginable. It was a masterwork of concluding a beloved and complex series and doing justice to a lot of characters without feeling bloated or rushed. I sobbed a few times. The only mistake in ToH s3e3 - and this is a hill I will die on - is that there wasn't a final hoot from Hooty.

I am just waiting for a spin of were we can watch the three years between killing belos and the timeskip. rebuilding theisles is interesting in its own way. especially with the new landmasses that came out of the ocean when the titans arm was lifted. I could honestly see people making games like liliths architactual adventures and amity's exploration. and maybe we can get a movie one day where they are all in their late twenties or something and they need to fight the collectors siblings so luz and king have to semi fuse to bring back titan luz, and maybe the collector can give amity a power up. that sounds like something I would watch. edit: also a spin off about political relations between realms and how when some politicians are against it like thousands of people go to protest

your discussion on how to judge season 3 got me thinking about something i've been kind of worried about for a while, that being how TOH will be perceived in the future. like... as a fandom connected online watching the show as it comes out, WE know very well all the BS going on behind the scenes that held the show back, but what about those watching years from now? tweets won't last forever (especially not these days lmfao), and us knowing about the shortening and having Word of God at our touchscreens is, as far as i can see, a privilege of the internet-driven era we live in. i don't know... i just have to wonder what it'd be like for some teen in 2038 checking out this classic "retro" cartoon from the 2020s (god i feel old already), and judging season 3 for what it did and didn't do, as if this were a choice on the crew's part. this show will likely go down in history in some part for its groundbreaking queer rep, among other things, leading it to be rewatched and discussed for years to come; likely not to an insane degree but hey, ATLA is still making the rounds in pop culture 18 years later and i can see TOH doing much the same. how long will the context we have for everything NOW reach? how long until the viewers from 2023 are no longer part of the argument and the question becomes not "what did TOH Season 3 achieve in the little time it had?" but "what did TOH Season 3 achieve?" it's probably silly to be worried about such things, and i mean i'd probably be telling anyone who'll listen about how unfairly disney treated the owl house when i'm in a retirement home lol, but still. kinda lost where i'm going here but, i really really enjoyed your discussion haha. i just think TOH, and any work of art for that matter, deserves not to be divorced from the context surrounding its creation, and such situations are absolutely worth taking into account when judging a piece of media. i just hope that with the advent of the internet, it'll become easier and easier to keep this history together moving forward.

I enjoyed listening to all what you two had to say, and I agree with everything you said post episode - it's a real shame this happened to such a good story. This show is the main reason I roll my eyes at all of Disney's live action movie representation shenanigans. They axed this wonder show that had an amazing story, and a colorful list of characters of all types because they decided it wasn't 'safe' enough for them to invest in. I hope they realize how beloved this show is and how much they screwed up by screwing this show over.

They've been doing this for over 16 years and I don't expect they'll learn anything from this experience unless they start making executives out of something other than soggy, confusingly stupid and evil cardboard but WE CAN HOPE

@@idlescree Oh, if only. Unfortunately, given the money they get out of the soggy, wet cardboard box scripts that are their live action movies, specially with a good push from the internet (both sides, those screaming for them, those screaming against), why invest in shows like this one? From a corporate stand point... it's a no brainer. Why do the risky one when the other one will 100% make the money on low budget and you get free advertising from all the discourse? At this point I'm terrified of how scripts will be replaced by ai generated ones, because people seem to have forgotten that what makes a good story, at the base... is not the amount of money tossed into the effects or animation, it's, at the heart, the script. A good script can make a low budget movie amazing, but a high budget will never make a bad script any better.

So how does it feel to be wrong and see everyone praise this show for how masterfully it pulled everything? ☺️ I honestly haven't seen much negative whatsoever. I definitely also don't agree with Disney being shitty and cutting short so many things but sometimes restrictions can be good. The owl house felt like it had a significant bit of ..."lag" in the middle of the second season. Nothing too awful but definitely noticeable. Season 3 even as it is, feels like such a legit masterpiece and I gotta wonder if the tight limited time forced all the unnecessary bits to be trimmed down into the very needed essentials and overall badassery. It's not great to not let a story breathe necessarily but witnessing it finish breathless yet victorious and immensely satisfyingly feels so damn good nonetheless. I love the finale as it personally. And I'm very happy many others do too. Also you two are such cuties in your reactions here lol! Great vid!!❤️

Blue Jays and Cardinals are both fairly territorial and they generally do not get along in nature. However, when you see them together, they are often considered a good sign, a sign of strength and wisdom, a sign that you are where you are supposed to be. I haven't seen anything confirming that's what they intended with Waffles, but with the way this whole series has been written, I find it very hard to believe that was coincidental.

This ending was beautiful considering what they had to work with and considering I don't have any blood family around me anymore, death and found family are so deeply ingrained in my life. Aawww I didn't even notice the FlapJack tattoos! That's so touching because that also means his transformation was that important to them too. I like the new bluejay. I always thought they were just blue version of cardinals. LOVE their older versions and your guys chat after have me reflecting nicely. Also, Horny toad cries blood? YEAH! Horny toads have a defense mechanism where they shoot blood out of their eyes. I have had opportunity to think about blue jays a lot more and honestly it makes so much sense for a million reasons but I was so (foolishly) locked into the idea of a wolf a;sdkfjdalkjg. But the Clawthorne bloodline is marked by human realm birds, and the bluejay has a bunch of significance relating to things like wisdom, growth and confidence--on top of rehabilitating the color blue for Hunter (which was previously deeply associated with Belos and death for him).

Okay, so Hunter having a blue palismen bothered me at first too. Y'know, since Belos is very much associated with the colour blue, so wouldn't it be potentially triggering for Hunter? But, and this may be a stretch, I thought, maybe it's reclaiming the colour blue for Hunter? I mean, apart from others in the comments saying what blue jays represent, it could be a visual way of showing that he's moving on and reclaiming his life. A colour that used to represent fear and control, now is associated with strength and freedom. I dunno, I relate a lot to Hunter so I always overthink the meaning of basically any scene he's in xd
