The most photographed are still the standard. symmetrical bone structure, smooth skin, young. The camera likes those features. The photogenic are still just models. Simply put.....it’s not new or different. The “styles” are the only thing that changes but the models are still cookie cutter....even if they shave their eyebrows.

@finnebleue67815 жыл бұрын
yes because natural aesthetics play a role in what humans find attractive and pleasing to look at. The canvas doesn't change, but the character, message and overall style changes. I feel like the point in this is to break social standards which prohibit self-expression, meaning the possibility for every single individual to DARE to act in a way they want without fearing certain consequences. And I think that changing one's own appearance in an unusual way and bringing this positivity and kindness to whatever situation one enters really can have a positive impact on people and, in conclusion, society.

i think people like this have had some type trauma in their childhood that makes them crave attention by any means necessary and for some the more extreme the better. i've seen some vids of people like this when they get a little older and start to mature into the real world of adult hood regret everything they have done because instead of being seen as an edgy dumb kid they now look like irresponsible worthless adults then the drug addiction kicks in hard core and now they want to commit suicide because they feel the world is against them and they cant fit in ect.. lol i dont know about all that but nothing positive can come from this in the long run im sure.

People that look like Jazzelle represent a very small percent of NYC these days, so if anyone gets the idea NYC is the US/western version of Harajuku, it's absolutely not. Even trendy neighborhoods are still mostly locals, regular looking working people, yuppies, and more mainstream/parent-friendly hipsters. She would stick out even in those neighborhoods (Bushwick, Ridgewood, Crown Heights, Bed-stuy, Harlem).

jazzelle is literally so sweet in this video and makes a point about discussing how important it is to make others feel included and loved in the underground fashion scene. yet a lot of people in the comments are assuming a lot of negative things about her and her friends without any actual basis - saying they’re the type of people to be judgemental of how other people dress, superficial simply because the video focuses on fashion, saying they’re not actually all that alternative, saying they’re too alternative to the point of looking like try hards, that they probably think they’re superior to other people, etc., without even realizing they’re being the same judgemental assholes they claim to hate :/
@synaestheticVI6 жыл бұрын
Can't help but feel that all this emphasis on "expressing yourself", "visualizing yourself" etc. is so superficial and self-centered... I get the point that it's important to not conform to other people's expectations of what you have to look like and what they create does look good and unique...but it seems that all they busy themselves with is themselves and their appearance :-/
@rhysf.5056 жыл бұрын
Agree, except the good and unique part. This stuff is dime-a-dozen in the modern world. Even the music is right in tune with the popular trends of today.
@wukilu3266 жыл бұрын
I also agree with both of your comments. My hairdresser even said to me that it´s nice that I have my natural hair colour, because dying it, isn´t even unique anymore... So many people try to fullfill themselves so hard that they don´t even realize what they already have...

I couldn't agree more, this is the very definition of self righteousness , self indulgence and vain self centered stupidity and uselessness . I can only think of one word to describe this video and this is , Vapid . And not in a good way .
@morganolfursson25606 жыл бұрын
So what Tamar, because you can have a career in it , it makes it less vapid ? I did modelling for about 10 years in the 90s (very successfully) , i haven't met more uninteresting and superficial people in my entire life. This job was torture whenever i had to interact with people , all i wanted was get paid and get on with med school . Those people are so full of it and by IT i don't only mean shit but also themselves (which is basically a pleonasm) it is absolutely staggering . There are different types of superficiality , one based on stupidity , and one based on profit . People in the beauty industry , whether it is classic, modern, post modern , neo bullshit contemporary , futuristic, deconstructed , arty farty my ass, and whether they are there for vanity or/and profit are ALL the same . A big mass of hypertrophied selfish and hypocritical ego, based on absolutely nothing even remotely relevant , and the personality to match .

"It's this beautiful time for weirdos and alternative people who've been swept under the rug..." Yet makes no references to the club kid generation of the 80's that are the culture that created the climate and art form she is practically calling her own. Know your history sis... you are not the unique butterfly you wish you were, just a carbon copy of the real pioneers of New York underground. And let's talk about weird. To be weird is not a fashion statement. It's a trait that a socially awkward individual laments, they don't embrace being legitimately awkward.. I HATE that people try to label trendy wardrobe and costume make-up as something akin to how a real social outcast feels. You will change your style with new trends or age and will always be surrounded with equally artistic friends, a social outcast will be who they are until they die and don't celebrate how they feel because it's actually painful.

manu ochenta , isn't that what most fashion is today? A repeat... Most people don't wanna show skin tight clothes and long hair, fair skin.. etc...blah blah. It's a more advanced look, uniquely their own twist. That's what is true fashion and boldness. You can tell when someone tries too hard ( seek attention), now a days. Can we all just love each other and stop the bs. I love it when I wear my gyaru styles but being in a " fit in" society, says it's not sexy or attractive. I say middle finger up! I tell individual all the time how I love their style, instead of just staring. Or I ask them, where did they get their sense of style from? It's good to get to know a person.

This isn't artistic. Or weird. Weird things do not get spotlighted by the biggest video sharing platform in the world. To be honest, I am damn sick of people claiming their weirdos while simultaneously having praise lumped at their feet. It doesn't happen that way, the two are mutually exclusive, if you are weird you will not be accepted but that's part of your life and you have to accept it.
@yee_kermit6 жыл бұрын

@liliebilie6 жыл бұрын
But what is "weird"? In my opinion everyone is. There is no such thing as normal. We all have our quirks that make us different. Some of those things are on the inside. People may look the part of what society deems as "normal" but that doesn't mean they are. I think people shouldn't look into these things so deeply. Live your truth.

@PedofilHare6 жыл бұрын
I just don't think it would get the same attention if it was an average and/or ''ugly'' girl (in the sense of conformity of society). It's the easy way out but not the right presentation of the subject. This is only my personal opinion and there's no need to be offended. Imagine how boring it would be if everybody just agreed on everything!
@stringybeanss6 жыл бұрын
yeahhhh! it's like the show ugly betty... she's not ugly, she just has braces and glasses
@ezracampbell99746 жыл бұрын
There's definitely room to talk about people who are perceived as ugly by society, versus those who are seen as pretty but just a little weird, and who gets more recognition, definitely the latter. But I think she's holding space for people who would be considered "ugly" and she's just the person who is gonna end up getting more recognized and interviewed. I don't think ugly even has one single set meaning and it's like ... There IS so much pressure to fit into societal beauty standards, on women especially, that you might roll your eyes about someone thinking they're "ugly" but yet it wouldn't change the fact that they deep down feel ugly and rejected. So it's also important for those people to feel accepted if that makes sense?? so idk i get your feeling about this and want to see like....... more fat people and people with "bad" skin and etc. etc. etc people who aren't accepted as beautiful by society get featured, but at the same time I don't think this is totally meaningless.

You don't pass through the "real you". If you really accept yourself and what your personality is, it won't change, it's permanent. What these people are doing is following a trend, and that's precisely why it won't last.

I listen to news and kind of meditate while doing my make up too, I get carried away and use like ten different eye shadow shades and 3 different lipstick colors just to prolong the experience.

Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso's crew were all weirdos who did their own thing. Their look isn't my jam, but their desire to live authentically is. Good on em, and it's good practice to not try to project my own insecurities onto this edited documentary.
