We meet the Tokyo youth celebrating genderless fashion. Using make-up, clothes and Instagram filters, these young people are challenging international beauty norms and drawing on japan's anime-fluid-beauty standards to express themselves.

This is fecked up. You have a society whose population growth is well below replacement rate, and here you are **celebrating** life styles which deny the fact that women give birth and take care of the children and men work to support the family until the children are old enough for both parents to work either full or part time. With a few generations there will be no genderless youth to celebrate because there won't be any children produced of either gender.

To quote a spoken line in The Cement Garden, "Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots because it's okay to be a boy. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, because you think that being a girl is degrading." Respect for these people for choosing what they believe in, despite the usual perceptions of society.

But hopefully, as the years go by, more and more people accept one's individual choices and respect each other.

Yes, I was amazed when he said that. All of these young people are brave strong and are incredibly dedicated to staying their true, authentic selves even in a society such as Japan's. Tokyo is a massive modern city. There are thousands and thousands of people there who don't fit into Japanese societal norms and you can find your place easily if you are a weirdo. Ad Hoc i think your missing the point. not everyone is open to genderless fashion and especially japan isn't. @flower-ld5id7 жыл бұрын

I also think it's because since it is patriarchal society to be seen in women's wear is like an insult. Ofcourse women can wear mens clothes, men are superior but to dress as a women makes you inferior. Which hinders mens ability to be expressive not just in fashion but in everything else. If you act and dress similar to a girl then you are seen as something less than.
@flower-ld5id7 жыл бұрын
TheNanamariam I think about the very same thing. For women to be seen as masculine is accepted because it's admirable in what remains a patriarchal society. Men that are feminine are definitely seen as degraded as men are also bound by gender roles

Kim Yugyeom, Of course they love what they're doing--they have lost their sanity. Biologically, they are still the same gender no matter what they do to change their genitals. The only change they are doing is their personality--which adds to their mental state. And obviously changing your personality doesn't mean negative. However it does DEPEND. Such as this one: This guy(Because that's who he really is)decided to chop his raw dick off. This is obviously because he thought it was style. It isn't because he just wants to be genderless. In fact, there is no damn purpose of being genderless other than being influenced of style.

I get comments like I look like a boy, people might take you as a lesbian. And when I wear business casual like a man would I get comment that I look endogenous. It stresses me out so much. I strongly agree with what he said; I don't think it should matter in what "gender" women and men dress up. Looking/dressing like a woman or man is a standard that we humans created over time. But if you think about it, men used to wear long toga in Greek which could look like a maxi dress today, heels in France, and even long hair. So, "gender" of what you are wearing was determined by the culture at that place and at that era; We can't set a rule that skirts are for girls and short hair is for guys. I am glad I found this video and happy to see these young people are promoting this "Genderless Youth" movement.

I think their style would be better described as "androgynous" rather than "genderless". "Androgynous" means personal presentation that appearings neither distinctly male nor female (or a blend of both), whereas "genderless" is usually used by nonbinary/transgender people to refer to their experiences outside the gender binary. There's a big difference between "I'm a boy that likes wearing skirts" and "I have no gender"... I think it's better to be clear with the terminology that's used. 😕

I'm a nonbinary person who lives in the U.S. and adores several Japanese fashion styles. I understand the confusion in labeling this style "genderless" as opposed to "androgynous", which is pretty analogous to what was described here but in western terms. I think there's likely a cultural disconnect of sorts between our understanding of this type of dress in Japan (assuming you're also from the West, but pls feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sorry for the assumption) and its connotations there and how we might interpret it here. It's called "genderless" there, and folks who wear it probably fall all over the actual gender identity spectrum (and may have different language for their experience than what non-cisgender folks in the West may use to describe their identities also!) but its closest parallel in the west would be "androgynous" styles of dress. Its not necessarily wrong that this what Japanese wearers of this style call it "Genderless", it's just their way of describing and relating to the style in their culture.

I've been wondering the same. But Japanese people don't know a lot about the LGBTQ community, so they might have not considered the possibility of being transgender or genderfluid. So they could be something they don't know they are. But at the same time, I think some people in the west who identify as genderfluid or non binary may come to that conclusion to quickly. They might just want to wear genderless clothes and not conform to stereotypes. But because they come in to contact with the LGBTQ community, young people in general conform to the "standard" (nonbinary, transgender, genderfluid) too quickly, as some kind of over compensation. It happened to a friend of me who used to identify as non binary, she now just identifies as a human and as a woman with male tendencies who doesn't conform to the stereotypes. I'm not saying genderfluid people aren't real, but it's interesting to see how much influence the LGBTQ community is in making someone identify as something. Young people who are a bit different than the norm think they must be something like in the LGBTQ community, and feel the need to lable themselves to fit in. In Japan they don't really have something like that, and maybe that just makes people more confortable in not putting a lable on themselves like 'non binary' and just be who they are.
@nicodiangelo84016 жыл бұрын
Probably not. In Japan their culture is very very strict the fact that these people are even doing this alone is amazing. Even then though they probably don't. Japanese people tend to be very comfortable with how they are born and if they're not comfortable they work hard to become something else, say a chubby girl wants to be skinny so she works out. They don't really care about an individual but when a whole group of people do this that's when people become weary, because In Japan if you haven't noticed they care about the group more than the individual.A lot of the time though students don't really care how other people dress or identify they kind of have the "Do what you want just don't affect me" type of mood about it. But the reason they do tease is because the older generations or people in power tease. I hope this helped a bit even though it doesn't really make sense. :/

I`m Canadian, I went to a very liberal university in Canada, and I lived in Japan for 10 years... Ideas/terminology and academic notions about "gender fluid," is VERY cultural specific. "Gender fluid," is a term (somewhat academic term as far as I can remember) that is often used by young city dwellers in parts of "the modern west," i.e. Canada, USA, Western Europe. It`s my opinion that in order to define "gender fluidity," in Japan one would have to back up, and be forced to rethink so many other cultural and historical differences and similarities between Japan and the west. "Gender fluid?, " not sure.... I don`t believe anyone in Japan believes that gender is merely a social construct, but BEING a man (and all its responsibilities), and BEING a woman (and all its responsibilities) in Japan can sometimes be very different than being a man or woman in the west. Japanese culture is fluid and flexible in ways the west is not. In Japan, they have an expression which loosely translates to "feel the atmosphere," or "be in the right kind of mind, in the right moment." Meaning that the Japanese have something of a rubber soul - they can be very different people at work, and outside of work... on weekdays, and on the weekend. Certainly they do not "stick to their guns," or prioritize their own morals and opinions over getting along with others.... difficult to explain. But they ARE far more flexible than westerners in many aspects. I have yet to meet a Japanese person with a completely closed mind, or someone with extreme opinions...the Japanese do not seem to follow ideologies in the same way westerners sometimes do.

Damn I feel like I just found myself right here lol I’m a Japanese girl but I’ve always been such a tomboy. I’m actually bi. that genderless girl is legit my goals. I’ve always wanted to cut my hair short like that but I’ve never been allowed to.
@hammydammy1235 жыл бұрын
Yuri Kawaii that’s really unfortunate. You should be allowed to do whatever you want with your hair. I bet you’ll look beautiful if you do cut it. :)

Being yourself can be one of the hardest things. But if you won't be yourself then who? When it comes to the fashion you have two options how to begin - First: You'll just go crazy and wear what you want and totally dgaf ..... Second: This one is step by step - One day you'll wear one thing from style that you like, next day you'll add one more thing and wear it together.... So, you'll slowly started having style that you like... If people will stare at you just think ,,Oh, they are looking at me 'cause I look awesome... or they are just jelous" (I'm still telling this to myself :D ) It could be really weird in the beginning but it'll help. If people will tell you that it doesn't suit you, don't listen to them. They are not you and you have your own eyes to judge what suits you...... So, yep, that's it. When you'll wear what you like you'll feel more confident and you'll be proud of yourself. And you could think ,,Ou look at these fuckers, they just wear what others around them wears. How sad." ...... Oh god, this is the longest comment on youtube I've ever wrote :D I hope I motivated you a little, good luck! And sorry if I wrote some mistakes :D

In stark contrast to the incredibly bad Buzzfeed video I just watched about Gyary girls, this is a very well made and sensitive report that shows us the culture in a totally neutral way. Thank you for making this piece, but would you please make your English subtitles larger, or in dropshadow, or even white on a black bottom bar? The subs on this are extremely hard to read.

I'm jealous of these people, because my mom is obsessed with me being "normal". She always wants me to be like the majority. When I'm in a shop with her and she shows me something that I just don't like, she gets mad at me and forces me to get it, because "she works in a school and she knows that girls my age wear it, so I can't not like it". She took my phone and my computer, because I got myself a really small ear tunnel. Even girls in my school liked it and a lot of people my age are doing it now, but she thinks I look like a "drug addict" or a freak with it, so everyone must think that and even though they pretend they like it, they are talking stuff about me in secret, when I don't hear it. So, to get my phone back I had to take it off. I never got my computer back. And she actually thinks that (I'm literally quoting her rn) "It's IMPOSSIBLE to actually like something that's unpopular and EVERYONE that likes something not so mainstream definitely has some problems with their head and some kind of social anxiety and does that just to gain attention". And she says I can't discuss with her, because she tells me she was schooled in psychology and she knows what she's talking about + that those are all facts. Can anybody help me? please ;;

Well...she's probably insecure herself, she doesn't want to be judged or something...Maybe not letting you express yourself is for her a way to protect you from negative comments (that would maybe be more harmful since you're truly yourself and not wearing a "mask") I don't know really...just remind yourself that being different is totally ok! You are you and don't let others put you down because of it. Expressing yourself is something that not everyone has the courage to do and you should never be ashamed of doing it! Try to find friends that support you no matter what and most importantly be your number 1 supporter haha! Just know that your mom won't control your choices for the rest of your life, everything's gonna be ok! My mom also tends to get mad at me because I'm not "feminine" but you know, just let it go, remember that comments say more about the person who said it that it does about you. I hope it made sense and helped you haha Have a nice day!

M. L. Thank you! I don't really care about what some people I don't even know or care about say, I have a girlfriend and friends that support me, my older (25-30 yo) siblings also do, but they don't live with me, so I have to deal with my mom alone ;; I love her of course, but sometimes I feel sad, because she's actually the most close-minded person I know and the one that doesn't let me express myself... If she didn't force me to act like and look like the crowd, I could 100% express myself. It's just sad that I don't like the 90% of clothes in my closet ;;

If she did study psychology she should have known that teenagers NEED TO EXPERIMENT!!! You should be free to wear what you want because that will shape your personality! My mom does the same thing sometimes but now I go shopping myself and make the excuse 'its my money so I do what I want'. Good luck!
@s.r.95597 жыл бұрын
sei Alright! I hope you will help her open up even a little, it often takes a lot of time but you might be surprised. Maybe her opinion about normality, conformity will change, who knows! Good luck! :)

I love this!! Clothing shouldn't even have "gender" in the first place. It's just a piece of fabric in different shapes! Who says just because you're a man, you have to wear pants? Who cares? It doesn't mean anything. I've thought about this a lot, how women are so much more free when it comes to fashion. Within the last century it's still been improper in many places for women to wear pants. But then there was a change in women's rights and fashion, and now I can go outside in a dress or skirt, or I can wear pants or shorts, and no one will care. But if a man goes outside in a dress or skirt, people will stare at him, make fun of him for "looking gay" and so on. People probably used to think it was impossible that one day it would be totally acceptable for women to wear pants, but now it's the norm. So I think we'll see the same thing one day with men wearing "women's clothes." ❤ ~:~

Fidem You kinda do... if you're a boy and are into feminine things do you honestly think in your mind you're a boy? You're slowly shifting over to being a female. As for clothes being just fabric, tell that to tight bikinis 'n bras. Designed for women who have breasts and a vagina. Not dildos 'n man nipples...
