That engine has all the signs of good maintenance and a healthy amount of Italian tuneup. The windage from frequent high rpm keeps the oil deposits from building up, running a high quality synthetic oil doesn't sludge and varnish very easily, the intake ports have a nice healthy fuel washdown pattern, the back of the intake valves are clean, and the dry areas of the ports have minimal buildup. It would have been interesting to see how the rings looked as far as how clean or fouled the grooves and oil rings were, as hard driving tends to keep them relatively clean as well.

I think the point to take here is if you don't change your oil, you get variable length rods and piston mcnuggets. If you do change your oil, you get them newfangled cracked cams and a nifty timing cover access port. That's why I don't use Amsoil. Instead I use Nozoil. Because no oil = no problems!

I cant stand knowing a VQ whether a 35 or 40 has failed. Because these motors are built SUPER TOUGH. So it must take a lot to kill one. And Nissans greatest feat for a mass produced motor will always be the VQ series in my opinion. Edit: The reason i am so confident in these motors is because i bought an 06 Xterra with 236,000 miles. After SMOD, and 3,000 miles and 1 Winter later, it developed the oh so annoying CHATTER. Well, i drove the X like this up until 322,600 miles. It just got to be so loud in drive thrus that i HAD to replace the Timing Components. And upon Front Cover Removal, i had ZERO ZERO ZERO ZERO ZERO ZERO timing chain tension. The guides were destroyed and all 3 tensioners were collapsed. But this engine kept running non stop. The chain was so loose it chewed a 1/4" valley into the rear timing cover and oil gallery plate. No misfire, no failure and no timing jumped. Now i want all readers who are mechanically inclined to think about that for a moment. NO CHAIN TENSION? And running it at 5500 RPMs a lot to pass? And this engine is STILL running good? How?!?!?!?!

Never heard of a bearing issue on a vq lol, only thing major that should be done on vq's roughly between 100-140k miles depending is timing chain stuff and do water pump & valve cover gaskets (valve cover gaskets are easy asf) while you're in there. Other than that if you literally keep routine basic stuff(oil change + filter, diff oil, transmission fluid), these are literally some of the most consistently reliable engines.

Stopping the crank for harmonic change. I use a trick my uncle showed me, i know not the best method. But remove plug and go to tdc on c1. 1/2 rotation on crank, feed about 6-8" of some 1/4" rope thru plug hole, clothes line works great. Intake valve will close, then continue spinning crank. The rope will stop piston without metal to metal contact. Turn back for removal. Helps for changing valve seals without pulling heads too.

This engine reminds me of an ambulance the yard I work for bought a few years back, it had a low output version of a duramax with a 4L80E behind it. It bumped into something and bent the torque converter. (yes you read that correctly) The torque converter neck being bent bound it over the input shaft of the transmission, 2 or 3 of the original 6 torque converter bolts were still holding on (heads popped off the other bolts) to the stamped drive plate (which was bent like potato chip) but still bolted to the crank. This drive plate being separate from the cast flywheel on a duramax, which in this case was in pieces. Were it not for what you just read the transmission likely would've been ejected, and all that was required to separate the engine from the trans was cutting the steel drive plate with the torch around the converter bolts through the convenient user installed access gap between the engine and trans.

The fact that it still turns over relatively easily means its likely "ok" since its not binding up in the rear main, but still would be good to check. I'd also want to check for cracks as well in that area, but it might not be so easy to inspect without fully tearing it down. I suspect what broke the trans off was having the front of the motor impact whatever the car ran into which then turned it at an angle relative to the trans, which snapped the bellhousing. Amazing the short-block survived that.

@@justsumguy2u maybe in cars from 30 years ago. Nowadays with crumple zones, air bags, head rests, stretching seatbelts, and the fact that its lateral movement that breaks vertebrae and severs the spinal cord, the odds of survival in a frontal collision are very high. Fatal injuries due to frontal collisions are typically incurred due to internal bleeding, which can happen, but it takes enough force to overcome the other safety systems. And that much force would annihilate the engine compartment. Now, a side collision is another matter. It doesn't take much of that to kill someone.

@@lovelessissimo I gotta admit this all seems so ghoulish and macabre. Unfortunately for me, it's all too real. I saw 2 kids killed in a 350Z in 2008 right in my rearview mirror. - Driver (who had been drinking) was speeding and rounded an S curve in town, went wide, driver jerked the wheel, overcorrected, the car slewed right then left and sailed across the center median, just missing me and T-boning itself sideways into a brand new Tundra behind me. Estimated impact speed about 130mph (Tundra 50mph+350Z about 80mph). Tundra was crushed to the firewall, its occupants sustained only minor injuries. The passenger in the Z had no chance, DRT. Driver was DOA at the hospital. It was a terrible thing to see happen, and I'll never forget it as long as I live. Modern cars are tremendously well engineered, but physics is still physics.

Technique i got from an experienced retired mechanic to get a crank bolt off without an impact is to take the heads off or at just one and shove some rope in one of the cylinders and put the head back on and can take a breaker bar to the bolt and the engine wont turn all the over. Used it once and it worked great, and the rope is soft enough so it wont damage anything. time consuming taking the head off, on, and then back off but if that's all you got then it works great.

Another great video. How about a Toyota RAV4 2azfe engine? It would appear they are reasonably bulletproof but I've read the newer versions are troublesome.

It'll probably be next to impossible to get but a VC-T nissan engine would be very very interesting to see torn down.

I have the vq40de in my pathfinder, from what I heard It's a 35de, stroked to 4.0L and detuned for towing reliability from nissan. I wonder what is the differences

Here's something to consider from what I see with this engine. The sludge at the bottom of the oil pan, for the bottom half, likely is oil that got exposed to the elements after the engine was hit. Another thing is, the coloration from the bottom to the top shows that either this engine was near brand spanking new before it got hit, probably by a heavier vehicle, or was just that well taken care of. Another thing is... the lack of carbon ontop of the pistons, or even on the head side of the chambers where the valves are. Which is bizarre, but makes me wonder if the engine was taken care well enough to keep carbon build up from being a problem ever, or if the engine was, again, just that new of an engine that it's lifespan was cut a bit short. It would make sense if the engine and car were both fairly new, or if at least the engine was, Which is a bit sad either way but... would explain the lack of any real internal oil varnish from the engine just running. Tho the stuff on the exposed sections of the engine... I presume is a form of varnish produced by some kind of oil product, such as the engine oil itself possibly. Either way, that small corner of the engine is clearly stained from the crash it had. Anyways... as for an engine for you to maybe tear apart... There's one kind of engine that I'd kind like to see, and that's a variable compression engine, which supposedly can adjust their compression on the fly of each piston individually to aid in emissions and also torque and power balancing and all of that stuff. Basically a bunch of fancy stuff, and I'd like to see one of those engines, perhaps a blown up one, but one that failed mostly nondestructively would be nice to see honestly solely for teardown purposes and whatnot.

I think that piston didn't hit the valves is because it happened so fast the piston didn't have the chance to make it back to the top to actually hit the valves

9:15 - The hub bushing is worn off-center. That doesn't happen from a crash. It had to be run misaligned for a long time to do that.

Once you try one of those heavy inertia sockets to get the crank bolt out, you will never struggle again! Also, the crank could be bent.

Congrats on the addition to the family. Reminds me of when my dad hit a parked car with his '67 Fairlane and pushed the other car through a brick wall. Broke the bellhousing and the engine slid under the car. Water pump and timing cover were non existent. Front of the car was nearly pushed around to the driver's door. He was only doing about 15 mph! Great vids. A suggestion for a tear down would be a W12 or W16. Not a cheap engine to find but an engineering marvel.

We use to have a full size, Ford E-350 van with a heavy duty trailer hitch. One day, she was rear ended by a kid driving his Father’s Acura Integra. He & his buddy were looking to the left at a For Sale car parked in a vacant lot. They didn’t notice that the traffic he was following by 20 car lengths had stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Just before impact he noticed the impending collision and jammed on the brakes. Which caused the nose of the Integra to dive, low enough that our van’s trailer hitch took the head off the Integra’s engine. My point is that even minor collisions can destroy an engine depending on the details of the impact.

First time I've seen an engine that was in good condition, and only destroyed from pure mechanical damage because of a wreck. I wonder how fast they were going and what they hit, it's obvious there was quite a bit of force involved.

I’ve changed quite a few of these engines for rod knock and I’ve always thought they pop out far to easy for Nissan to not know they were going to have rod knock.the first one I did took 6 hours to replace the last one took 4 hours to replace

What? You want to stop the crank from turning? Well, son, open an extra inspection port in the engine block, and throw in some piston McNuggets. You DID save some from last time, right? 🤣😆😅

As the new VQ38DD is now getting mature, I would love to see a tear down of one. I'm sure a handful of owners have neglected some of these engines to the point of failure by now.
