I worked at a huge Chevy dealership between 2022, and 2024. I currently work at a higher end used car dealership. The l84 still have cam, and lifter problems. with lifters sticking in the shut position. There has also been a problem with the plastic lifter guides stripping the centering part causing the lifters to spin, and take out the cam shaft. Have replaced many camshafts/ engines because of this.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, I was the chief mechanic for a bus company in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. One Australian-built Bedford bus had been modified to put the engine in the rear, making it easier for passengers to enter the vehicle. But the poor engine suffered from its inability to talk to the driver. On one trip, I drove it into some rather rough country, unpaved roads, etc. After that, we lifted the engine 3 inches, which lifted the front of the engine too much. Resulting in several blowups. I have recently written all this up in a series of books on my life and travels so far. A group was on the way to Fleays Wildlife Park on the Gold Coast when there was a bang, and the engine lost power; looking in the mirror, the driver saw pieces of the engine bouncing along the road. The engine was still running (on 4 cylinders), but oil was gushing out of a large hole near the starter motor. A teacher bent down to pick up a piece of engine when the driver yelled, “Don’t touch that, it will be very hot”. The camshaft had broken, and a piece was knocked out through the side of the block. Another rescue, another tow it home. Another time, it was going out West and stopped in Toowoomba to get refreshments. When restarted, the oil pressure failed, and the engine seized. Dare I repeat, another rescue, another tow it home. I fitted a new crankshaft and bearings. I was getting so used to working on this engine that, from driving into the yard with air tools, I could have the gearbox out in 7 minutes and the head off in ten. One of the first modifications I made to this vehicle was to grind part of the Bell housing away to allow gearbox removal without dropping the engine out of its mounts. My brother Jim was coming back from the Sunshine Coast, empty, suddenly the oil buzzer came on; glancing in the mirror, he saw a red flash, then lots of blue smoke over the front of a car about to overtake. The number one big-end bearing had overheated, the bolt had broken, the connecting rod was so hot that it bent around the crankshaft, and the piston went straight out the bottom, taking the oil pump with it. Another R.A.T.I.H. This engine we salvaged, the crankshaft that had seized previously, I set up in John’s lathe and cleaned up the bearing surfaces with emery tape; it had a 0.006” bend in it (twice the thickness of a cigarette paper). I could move it that far with my thumb. I didn’t think that would be a problem. (But it only took a small bump to ruin this crankshaft) We had plenty of other parts on hand from blown engines. After a while, we noticed a vibration problem. Things typically mounted on the engine were being damaged, such as temperature gages, the oil switch, etc. On a trip back from Airlie Beach, a brass plug came loose and fell out of the block, causing a loss of engine coolant. The engine seized so severely that it could not be turned over, even when towing the vehicle. I’ll come back to this later. We left it in Rockhampton with a seized motor back on page 7, and it got another mention on page 12 before the shift out of Goodna. A few weeks after the change, a bus and 2 men were sent up to bring it home. We, the apprentices and I, (by this time I have 2 Russell’s working under me) just left it parked in a corner of the shed, knowing full well that if we worked on it, it would go back out on the road until the next ‘Tow it Home’. Eighteen months later, another company closing, gave us a used engine, so we set about getting it up and running again. Now to get the seized motor out, I undid the exhaust manifold but could not remove it, eventually it broke away and to our astonishment the manifold had a thick layer of aluminium all the way through. During the seizure, the alloy pistons melted, and the alloy flowed right through to the muffler. On page nine, we jacked the motor up 75mm; after that, the extra slope of the motor allowed the oil to drain out of the oil pump if the vehicle was parked nose downhill. This caused the pump to fail to pick up, especially this used one. (pump failing also mentioned on page 7) I had thought of putting a rise in the pickup pipe and later found that Hino had done just that in their larger models to ensure that there was always oil in the pump. The vehicle was sold, and of course, the new owner very soon had trouble picking up oil pressure. Ted from Down Under.

Finally got rid of the truck when a catalytic converter failed at 78,000. If I had to take a guess at what happened, I bet when the truck rolled over the engine was still running and oil filled that cylinder on the compression stroke which caused the rod to break. The minimal damage makes me think it was at low RPM and the breakage shut it down, preventing other cylinders from suffering the same fate. Upside down is also why the other cylinders filled with oil. With the exception of that one cylinder, that engine looked to have been well taken care of even if it was slightly over due for plugs and wires.

NHSTA just opened an investigation on the L87, and GM does have recalls on the L84, so getting these trouble resistant is not keeping up with adding complexity

You should get an i.r 2235 ti max 1/2 impact. They have all the balls and never die. Everyone in the shop borrows mine when they can't get bolts off. So often that now 3 of my co-workers bought them. Just make sure you don't get the "quiet" one

Did you see the newer I R gun with the swappable anvils & drive sockets? Pretty cool idea & nice execution too. 👍🏻🛠️

@tdotw77 yep my co-worker bought it and went to go use it and it just blew air right through it and didn't spin or impact. Hopefully just a 1 off lemon.

Mine blew up TWICE due to bad welds on the oil cooler, once at 19,000 miles and again at 23,000. Hell, that probably came out of my old Silverado Trail Boss.

@budlanctot30608 күн бұрын
I'm not a GM guy, but I gotta say I was impressed with the serviceability of this engine. It looked pretty well engineered. The only thing I didn't like was the condition of the DI intake ports, but I don't know if that was poor design or poor maintenance & cheap gas.

The biggest thing is to avoid short trips and change the oil way more often (5k miles of less).

@tdotw77 No thanks. All the other options are worse. 2024 Tundras are still eating bearings and the rest of the truck is trash. Ford's are eating valves and their version of the 10speed is worse. Ram dropped the cam eating 5.7 and replaced it with an inline 6 with a plastic thermostat that fails and warps the head. I can handle changing the oil more often and not worrying about it. Seems a lot of others feel the same way considering lifter issues is a known thing yet GM truck sales have increased every year for the last 4 or so years. Even through this Bidenomics bs.

To turn an engine backwards, what about something like a chain wrench on the timing cog, might have to be custom so there's some chain under the end to protect the cog Or where there's enough acess, a couple of bolts on the back end of the crank

Acquaintance works in a GM engine development facility. When he found out I had an AFM equipped ‘16 Tahoe, and that I did my own maintenance, he emphatically suggested cutting the OCI down to 3K miles if I could, and never go over 5K miles. Their examination of warranty replaced engines, and internal testing, showed that the AFM cylinder deactivation components were very sensitive to oil condition.
@denverkenyon32035 күн бұрын
I’ve heard it called many things, but not “dynamic” fuel management. Active fuel management, cylinder deactivation, etc.

Here’s my experience with the L84: the lifters WILL fail at around 110k+ miles. Seen a 2018 (112k) a 2019 (130k) and another 2018 (115k), all with a lifter failure. A 2018 with 105k that was starting to have some lifter noise, but no wiped out cam, saved that one. After that I have seen a 2018 with ~100k and a 2019 with 95k, no lifter issues yet

It never ceases to amaze me on General Motors’ 1950s technology. People continue to buy them because of their low cost. They still use plug wires and push rods, which is quite surprising considering that GM has been manufacturing the V8 engine since 1950. Instead of improving upon their existing design, they seem to be trying to make it worse.

Glad someone sent you that plastic rod/cylinder punch. The art piece is a great idea, I'd find someone with a plasma cutter, that's only because I'm super impatient.
@jbussey53019 күн бұрын
I'd leave the remaining section of the busted rod in the block. Clean it as is to a shiny new finish. Seal it and mount the block on a display stand with the bottom facing outward. To serve as a remind to customer's that things could be a lot worst. 🤔👍

Any engine with active cylinder management is a ticking timebomb. I had a 2008 Honda J35 in my Accord. It was burning oil and cylinders 2 and 3 had oil fouled plugs. I flushed the engine and installed a VCM tuner and it ran beautifully.
