The 2.0T GME family of engines had Bob Lee and Aldo Marangoni as team leaders. Bob Lee worked for Chrysler since 1978 and worked on the modern HEMI line and Pentastar V6 engine programs. Aldo Marangoni was the Powertrain Engineering Director for Latin America and worked on many diesel engines. The engine was named after the Hawker Hurricane British WWII fighter plane. The block has many similarities to the Neon’s 2.0L DOHC (ECC). For those unaware the 2.0L ECC later evolved into the 2.4L EDZ and later the 2.4T EDV/EDT found in the Neon SRT-4 and PT Cruiser GT. The combustion chambers are similar to the 4.7L H.O. PowerTech V8. Jeep’s 2.0T is referred to as EC1 in terms of engine code. The Alfa Romeo 2.0T uses a closed deck block?! This is actually false. The block is identical to the Jeep 2.0T block. This makes much more sense as at some point the Jeep engines were built alongside the Alfa engines at the Melfi plant in Italy. I know for a fact the engine in mine was assembled at the Melfi plant. After the first quarter of 2021 some production returned to the States. Jeep’s 2.0T was initially assembled in the Trenton Engine Plant. Kokomo Engine Plant currently assembles the engine.

Today I opened up a Cat/Perkins 3054/1004 and I was surprised that it hadn't seized up. #5 lower main bearing was beat and it looked like a one-piece thrust bearing. That and the transfered bearing material tells me that it was close to catastrophe. I didn't do the science though. 3/4 pistons had broken top rings and the ring lands were hammered. It was very impressive to have still been running, although it was pushing a stream of oil out the rear main and by mostly covering the draft tube, it whistled. 😮 Oh, and enough dirt in the intake to grow taters.

I enjoy these IDC videos because I worked for several years as a car mechanic and then switched to dealership motorcycles. I've always been fascinated by mechanical things. My dad was a mechanic for whatever needed fixing. If he worked on our own cars, he'd do it at home where I'd watch as soon as I was tall enough to kind of see what he was doing. I was probably around 5 when I started watching him - and asking him a million questions as he went along. Now I'm retired and get to see all the fun stuff without getting dirty, bleeding or getting something out of my eye. 😏 These videos allow me to see new engine technology. When I switched from cars to motorcycles, I found out that motorcycle engines were way more advanced and efficient over car tech of the 60's, 70's😊, and 80's. That seems to have changed nowadays and looks like car engines are finally catching up. This Jeep 4 banger impressed me too. The use of roller and needle bearings in automotive engines hasn't been in vogue since the early days of autos. Great video. Crappy pistons and rings!

As a 21 4XE owner, I warm the engine up by kicking it into manual D1 to get it idling, otherwise hybrid kicks the motor on only when you need power. My last Jeep I bought new in 07 and had a 148,000 miles on the old 3.8 with I sold in 14 years later. Never had any real issues with it, other than leaked oil out of everything. I think if this was low speed detonation, there would have been a lot of melting on the piston crowns. We didn't see that. What we saw was the rings seized and broken which is why this engine was dead. I'd say that's likely incorrect oil, despite being changed as much as the manufacturer recommended. If you look, the "good" pistons oil rings were also not in good shape. Which is why I think what I think,.. wrong oil,.. either in viscosity, grade or both.

One way to help a little with the detonation issue on a turbo gdi engine is to get a little heat in the engine before giving it the beans. After the morning cold start, gasoline will wash down the cold cylinders due to incomplete combustion and will accumulate between the rings, if the engine is pushed a little to hard during this warm up period, that accumulated gasoline can detonate and will basically explode the ring lands. Drive very gentle with minimum amounts of turbo boost during warm up!

Detonation will show as pepper specs on the plugs and piston top. Didn't get a close enough look at either to tell though the piston tops didn't seem too bad. I'm thinking more of a defect in the ring land machining process. Maybe chatter from worn tooling sets up stress points which will fail given the right conditions. Overspeed might be one of those.

I looked because I thought the 2.0T engine would be like some better version of the GEMA engine. It doesn't look like that to me. Lake Speed Jr said that API SP oil was reformulated to reduce the detonation on T-GDI engines. This may also apply to oil standards on cars that do not use API specification oil, such as BMW or VW.

the m12 and m18 are the exact same except the brain box that gives the power. thats why the m18 lasts a lot longer than the m12, just like a v6 motor pulling a truck vs a v8. v8 doesnt try as hard, almost always ends up better
@@bradhaines3142 More volts=more cells=more power capacity. When comparing the M12 vs M18 fuel drill especially, the M12 seems to have a smaller motor based on the size of the drill and at full chooch the m12 shuts down after give or take 10 seconds even with the 5.0 high output battery meanwhile the M18 keeps chugging along with relative ease. I prefer the M12 fuel for compact size and lighter weight but I bust out the M18 for a more daunting task

Access to these engines seems to start with the instruction: "remove engine from car." The difficult thing about that step is how often major bodywork etc removal is required to remove the engine. It is like the old Jaguar E type, the first step for removing the engine was to remove the front suspension.

To do that on Wranglers you just remove the cab from the frame and make your life 10 times easier. It takes a handful of bolts, disconnecting some harnesses, hoses and their associated fluids, and having a hoist ready to hold the body for a couple of days. I've seen it done a handful of times and know a skilled tech can have the cab off and the engine out in a day, all back together in two.

The new oil requirement to help prevent LSPI is and SP rated engine oil. It has less Calcium in the chemistry. These new oil requirements have just been implemented by the oil manufacturers and there are still plenty of the SN oils out there on the shelf, so be ware when buying oil for small turbo engines. Check to make sure you are buying the SP and not the old formulation SN.

40:30 Detonation, even low speed detonation, tends to scar the piston crowns and affect the compression ring and land first. I wonder if... you'd have to really microscopically examine the bores and the ring edges to see this, but I wonder if there's a specific set of circumstances that causes ring chatter in this engine, like running hard when cold, lugging, or spending too long around a harmonic. Too little tension, a little too much vertical clearance in the groove, and the ring skip-hopping down the bore eventually fatigues and cracks the ring lands. There wasn't any visible evidence of such, but I could also have landed on a brief overheat episode closing the ring gap and popping the lands apart, especially given the coolant spilled across the top of the head. There should be other signs of that though, and I didn't see any.

Removes spring clamp from hose then, as expected takes a Sawzall to it. I feel like I know Eric so well 😆 Treat GDI engines like diesels, which are also direct injection. In cold weather fuel washes down the cylinder and GDI engines benefit from a 2-3 minutes of idling to get the oil moving before driving off gently until the engine reaches full operating temp. The specified oil is thin, which likely adds to the issue. I miss port injection and thicker piston rings.

Dave’s auto center did a vid on low speed preignition. I believe his 2 main takeaways were using the correct oil and make sure you warm the motor up completely before driving. DI turbo motors are notorious for this because it seems like people just start their vehicle and go and causes that. Also… you should invest in an electronic microscope to show good detail closeups on the damaged parts like this. Just a thought, would be cool to see. Great vid.
