In a later season the son of one of the contestants had a serious medical emergency and the father immediately left the game when given the offer, it's a completely understandable situation to be concerned about a loved one, especially one who is in such critical condition. The only real difference between these situations is that Cancer is a slow burn and a severe medical emergency is very sudden, one could maybe justify their disappointment with "if your mother was dying, why did you decide to join the game?" but even then it's a very justified departure.

Its incredible her intuition was strong enough to make her strong enough to make that decision when she had no contact whatsoever....in retrospect it was of the bravest and most respectable moves in survivor history. What happened to Sue was a very typical and common sexual harassment case- where a man has set up a situation for a woman to be sexually humiliated if she does not change direction, where she would experience other consequences (often criticism from others) if she tries to avoid it, resulting in it appearing to everyone else like she walked into or permitted the act. Many women grow up having been taught that they need to take up minimal space and make everything convenient for others, and so they end up in a point where they eg. don't shove a guy away when he gets in her space, even if she is clearly rejecting it. Then the fact that she was violated nags at her mental health in the days, weeks, months following, and people look down on her for blowing up about something she seemed fine with when it happened. In Sue's case, she believed because of the competition that everyone expected her to go through with crossing paths with a nude Richard and that she was at risk of being blamed for losing the challenge, and thus getting voted out, if she kicked up a fuss. So she pushed through and was violated and only felt the impact on her psyche when the adrenaline wore off. People who say that she brought the situation on herself need to keep in mind that she was faced with the decision of avoiding the naked guy, or potentially winning a million dollars. Maybe some of the others are comfortable enough with nudity to have done it even if it was a dare alone, but in her case, it is very possible that she would have firmly said no, if she hadn't had so much at stake. And when consent is gained by threat like that, it's not consent. Kathy's reaction was very disappointing, because while judging Sue she highlights the exact social standards that forced Sue into that situation- women have to contain their emotions or else be disrespected. Sue did contain her emotions, when she stepped into the violation on everyone else's pressure. And that screwed up her health. Is it not maybe more important for men to contain whatever emotions led to them thinking putting women under sexual threat was a good strategy?
@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong
@Captain-Sum.Ting-Wong Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the early 2000s were still just a different time. You can see that with the way media handled women at the time. Just look at the type of women on magazine covers, watch almost any comedy movie from that era and you'll see so much sexism. Kathy's response was how most people reacted to Sue at the time. I remember even rewatching the season with my parents a few years ago and they agreed with what Kathy said. I've had conversations with my mom who worked in an office in the 70s and 80s and described what was sexual harassment to me but just brushed it off as "the way things were"

Can we point out the Big Tom was an a**hole about BOTH quits on All-Stars? Not cool, dude. Sue’s quit in all stars still haunts me - that was the first season of survivor I ever watched (I was 6) and my mom made my sister and I look away from the tv and put it on mute. I didn’t understand why it was so upsetting at the time, but I watched again when I was about 18 and realized not only how disturbing that situation and the reaction to it was, but also how differently I think it would’ve been portrayed if it happened in a newer season.

I can’t watch the Kathy quit at all, I have to skip over it whenever it comes up. I’m heavily medicated on antidepressants and the same thing happened to me mentally when I went off my antidepressants for a week due to money. Survivor could not create a more emotional scene if they tried. If you have depression or OCD or PTSD or any other mental illness and have went off medications, you know how it feels. It seriously hurts to watch and is quite triggering. I will always defend Kathy’s decision to quit because I know what that’s like.

I remember hearing somewhere (don’t remember where) about this situation that somehow makes the circumstances around Kathy’s quit worse. Why they couldn’t extend Kathy the same courtesy is beyond me.

@@kingofthorns203oh I know how it gets even worse, remember FairPlay asking to get voted off? @@kingofthorns203 This is one reason why I would rather be on the production side of Survivor instead of trying to play it. I went through HELL AND BACK after I went off my medication for ADHD as it literally felt like my body's senses were being rewired as I was awake, and I don't think I want to go through a similar situation again, even if it's for a million bucks. In case your wondering what I mean, basically if I swung my arm forward, my brain was telling me I was actually swinging it backwards and the same applied whenever I was walking.

@@pockylovingrangerAsperger’s is no longer an official diagnosis, since research has shown that there isn’t enough difference between it and other autism disorders. I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder a few years ago and asked the psychologist about it. And I definitely get what you mean about hard to describe withdrawal symptoms. Whenever I’ve had to go off of an SSRI, even if it’s just a few days because my pharmacy couldn’t fill the prescription before I ran out, I would get a symptom that I found online is called “brain zaps.” I had no idea how to describe it before that, but as soon as I saw that descriptor I knew that’s what I was experiencing.

The people who were critical/mean towards Jenna or Sue's quits, it makes it hard to root for them. I loved Kathy in season 4, but after what she said about Sue's exit, it really changed my opinion of her. I really feel for Jenna and Sue and I hope today they are content with their decisions and know they have a lot of people who support them. Additionally, what Richard did to Sue is so gross. I was grossed out when I first watched the moment and I'm still just as grossed out. What makes a person think rubbing their naked genitals on an acquaintance who did not consent think that's an ok thing to do? I am so frustrated with the particular people in the game, within the crew, and the audience who brushed off the event as a joke. 1. it's just gross, and more importantly, 2. it's incredibly violating.

What’s crazy about Jenna and Sues quits is that Jenna Morasca’s mother died the same day that Sue left the game. The show was filmed from November 3-December 11, 2003. Sue quit on day 17 of filming, which would have been on November 19, 2003, which is the same day Jenna’s mother (Carla Morasca) died.

This is not so much about quits, more about medical evacuations or so called medical quits, I personally think that US Survivor should borrow the sick day standard that is seen in Australian Survivor where the players are able to get one day outside of the game to treat their illnesses or infections and if that can be solved in 1 day which in numerous situations happens, players can get back in the game. For example, this sick day strategy could give Erik from Survivor Caramoan the chance to comeback in a game because seen in the Ponderosa videos, he was all fine in the next day and the stomach problems were instant and painfull but can also be solved very quickly and that can prevent people from leaving a game just because of some very short medical problems.

I do like how Australian Survivor handles it - but I don't think we'll ever see it in US Survivor, especially now that seasons are only 26 days long. Even if you're out for 24 hours, that's a LOT of game to miss.

I felt so mad at the universe on Randen's behalf for what it did to his arm. Out of the game for one little thing because it might have been his spine. But it wasn't his spine. You could see in his exit video he was using both arms and everything. I know they did what they had to do but it feels super unfair that he couldn't come back. I agree with you, the sick day sounds like a great idea and if Randen doesn't get another chance before season 50 I'm going to be mad.

The way the producers handled the Osten situation is so gross. His tribemates backed up his claims of the staph infections. In any season since then, someone with that many infections would be pulled from the game; no questions asked and rightfully so. That sort of stuff is life-threatening. So I've said this in other places before, but my hottest survivor take is that NO ONE and I do mean NO ONE has a right to judge contestants for quitting or wanting to quit. Not Jeff, nor production, or even the audience nobody. You don't know how you will react to the brutal conditions these contestants are put through until you're there. These people are stranded there (and yes I'm very well aware that they're all consenting adults who signed a waiver and put themselves there), they are exposed to the elements, with very little water, very little food , and on very little sleep, not to mention that they are playing a game in which they don't know who to trust. Conditions like that are a recipe for disaster, which is what production and the viewers want since at the end of the day this is an entertainment program, and the contestant's health and safety particularly in the old day wasn't top priority. But these are also human lives and not everybody's equipped to handle that kind of pressure, until you're there, THAT'S where you find out whether or not you're able to handle it.

On the subject of some people being allowed medication and some not, I was really mad about Jess in season 46. She got booted second because she wasn't doing well in challenges and her explanation was that she was really out of it because she wasn't allowed to take her prescribed ADHD medication. Why TF not? It's not like it's giving her in advantage or something. It's just allowing her to be alert and focused, you know, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! My latest reason to be afraid to apply to Survivor even though I really want to is that they wouldn't let me have medication, which I guess lumps in with the concern that they wouldn't let me through the mental health check.* My buproprion I could do without, I might be fine without allergy meds (e.g. Sudafed), but my main one has scary withdrawal symptoms, not to mention it helps with emotional regulation which is pretty important. And then the hormone regulator. It almost stops my períod, which would be pretty fabulous for a game like Survivor. Those things have a tendency to inhibit athletic performance, even with tampons and such. The idea that it would give me an unfair advantage against the other girls would be awful because that's a disadvantage that none of the boys have. "No period means less risk of emotional outbursts" seems like a good pitch to the producers, but then again so does "My stimulant/iron supplement/nicotine patch allows me to function like a regular human being" yet here we are. *(My previous reasons include: Unathletic. Average height fem. Can't stand fish. Afraid of germs. Afraid of spiders. No TP. No comfort objects. Never camp because I'm afraid of péeing on myself when I go on the ground. I'd probably get booted first like Carolina because I'm smallish, I sometimes struggle not to be bossy, and I struggle a lot more if I'm anxious, which I definitely would be, constantly.)

Naonka was rude as hell, but I can’t lie and say she wasn’t entertaining to watch. You know the producers were so mad that she wanted to quit, considering all the gold they were getting from her. And he isn’t wrong, Naonka had a HUGE chance of making the finals, she was kinda in control of the game for weeks, she could literally go on tangents at tribal council and still make it through without being voted off. Edit: And no, the people that pull the flag at Edge should not be considered quitters. They were voted off, fair and square, and just didn’t want to be miserable for even longer waiting for the slight chance that they might get back in the game. Sandra especially being not great challenges knew there wasn’t a point in staying. It’s a mechanic they added to the game, so no it should not be considered quitting in the traditional sense.

I personally don't consider the Edge quits as quits because they got voted out first. It is an interesting history here.

Mathew I put a big asterisk on his "quit" because it seemed pretty clear to me that medical gave him a choice of how he wanted to leave, did he want to make the choice or get pulled, and he chose to go with some agency.

6 staff infections? Totally sounds believable. Him being terrified by that pelican is classic though. I swear that bird was like domesticated or something like one of the other tribe members just picked it up like It was a lap dog or something super weird

ok but even tho lindsay’s cagayan quit isn’t justifiable, her and trish clearly hadn’t gotten along since day 1, and i don’t blame her for not wanting to make an ass of herself in front of her daughter if she knows she’s an aggressive person that’ll react emotionally.

Kind of sounds like it is justifiable then. Those reasons sound pretty justifiable right there. No shade, just empathy.

I understand all of Jeff’s responses to each quit. Be it positive or negative. Except for Matthew in S44. A couple reasons. Probst said he did not quit, he left as a result of how hard he was playing the game… Jeff, he was climbing a massive rock that he had no reason to climb. Also, he left to prevent further damage to his shoulder/health. It is pretty much the same circumstances of Bi’s quit in DvG. A few slight differences, but ultimately, the same. Let’s call a spade, a spade, he quit. I don’t blame him for quitting, but I don’t like how ambiguous production treated the situation.

I feel comfortable with not calling it a quit. Even though he got injured for a silly reason, it was a major injury. I think of it as more of a "soft medevac."

I’m actually mad that Sandra wasn’t still included in the WaW jury. They shoulda made an exception for the season. They had an amazing loved episode just as a celebration for the 20yrs and 40seasons. ALL our winners should’ve been part of the monumental jury.
@ArcanineEspeon
@ArcanineEspeon 4 ай бұрын
Since she apparently wasn't told that she would be on the jury if she didn't leave, and she was literally given the option to leave, that feels so shady. But tricking Sandra seems like a weird thing for production to do. I thought they loved her.

It's still crazy how Colton was able to convince EVERYONE to vote Bill off... then he decided to quit. Should have kept Bill in hindsight.
