Fantastic...as usual coming from Keith Carlock. I always really enjoy his bass drum grooves.

I was lucky enough to grow up near NYC and see him play with Wayne Krantz and Tim Lefebvre at the 55 Bar (small dive bar) since 1996 from 3ft away, and have a beer with him occasionally. It's been a privilege to watch his career flourish, but yet he still plays with these guys because this is how he developed his unique technique, & style from improvising.

I know! I had a few lessons with Keith after having a beer with him there. $75.00 for an hour! He was alway so gracious and generous with his knowledge. That band made the 55 bar literally one of my favorite places on the planet. I'd try to go as much as possible to get my mind blown. I'd even compare that time to being able to see Coltrane's Quartet in person. It was some real magic happening. Lighting in a bottle moments!

Mike Pietrusko Cool!! I live in So Cal now. They don't really have an underground dive scene of top session, and jazz guys. The culture is too corporate, except; The Baked Potato, The Brig, The Blue Whale, and Catalina Club . But, Whenever I'm in NYC (twice a year) I go to the 55 Bar, Smalls, Bitter End, and pay my awesome NYC $15-20 two drink minimum. I try to catch Donny McCaslin, LaFave, Mark Gulianna, Dave Binney's bands, Chris Potter's bands, or Dafnis Prieto if he's playing a show. But my all time favorite power trio ever; 'Krantz, Carlock, LaFave'.

I saw Keith three nights in a row w/ Steely Dan at the Masonic Auditorium in S.F. some years back, before Walter Becker passed, R.I.P. What good a choice on the Dan's part. Go Keith 🤙

Out of all the clinics I've attended, his was my favorite. Sitting front row center was amazing. His bass drum was like a punch to the chest every time.

to me, he really seems to represent something new, something different in drumming. He plays in a way I've never heard before, but at the same time the feel seems familiar

ahhh Keith you groovy sonofagun! Fantastic stuff! I have always loved how Keith uses the bassdrum, for some reason he feathers it just right and gets this beautiful almost ghost note sound out of it in his grooves. I don't hear that very often with drummers, its always with snare, never with the base drum.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I could listen to Keith's solo (because it is his signature solo) all day long. Unlike some amazing drummers that just display lightening fast chops when soloing, Keith actually tells a rhythmic story with his solos. There's an ebb and flow to it and a very cool underlying bass drum beat that holds it all together. He's made variations along the way but, thankfully, stayed true to the core rhythm - a sound no one else has.

This guy is unbelievable, he plays amazing phrases and his stick control is on another level. only thing I can't workout is how his bass sound changes around 2:09? It drops a few notches and becomes more earthy! But his skills are as addictive as "H"!

Adam Correia Yes! Keith gives a great solo, as always, but the clicking is constantly pulling on my attention. I'm thinking it's either clipping at the pre amp with too much gain or the mic could be placed just on the threshold of the resonant head and is picking up too much of the wind blast at louder dynamics which clips at the mic itself. Grr.
@Killenmachine057 жыл бұрын
its the sound guy not really knowing how to handle how carlock set up his kick drum, he has it wide open, so these modern sound guys don't know what to do, they just try to make it punchy, but its the wrong move as its just clipping the sound system hard.
@jumpinjojo5 жыл бұрын
Adam Correia It's something with the kick.

Samsgarden Right. Saw him with Steely Dan and about three years later with John Mayer--same solo. Great, but the same. I think he solos out of a sense of obligation more than desire. And why does his weight fluctuate so much?
@Samsgarden9 жыл бұрын
Michael Anderson I dunno but I'm not concerned about his weight. I became quite engaged with him with the release of Oz Noy's debut album, but now he's tired; like Oz Noy.

Samsgarden well I think that's just nothing special anymore. Many cats sound similar when you listen to their soloing concepts more than twice. Even Vinnie has similarities.
