IDS and IPS

An intranet is a private network which is heavily protected by many different networking devices, such as router, firewall, proxy server, honeynet, IPS and IDS. This diagram is an overly-simplified version of the reality. I try to put these devices together in a reasonable order, only for teaching and learning purpose.
IDS and IPS are two networking security devices. IDS stands for Intrusion-detection system.IPS stands for Intrusion Prevention System. They play different roles and work together to protect a local area network. In this video, you will learn what they are and what are their main functions.

Love all the videos you post. Very clear and informative. Though, I recommend that you revise this video because you are placing the IDS and IPS outside your firewall in the graph. That does not make sense unless you mean that the firewall is also acting like the IDS and IPS, but still a bit confusing. The IDS and IPS goes behind the firewall between your firewall and nodes. If IPS is host based, then inside the host. Keep up the great work with all the videos. I really enjoy them. :)

Thanks a lot, my friend for your comment. I really appreciate it very much. You are absolutely correct about host-based IPS and network-based IPS. Here I overly simplify the IPS and all other devices, especially the order is also overly simplified. The rationale is to explain distinguished features of each different device. You are right about current technologies: all these separate devices can be combined into one box. Again, I appreciate your comment. Yes, they are software, as well as physical device sold by different vendor, but mainly software. Just you can turn your pc into a server when your software is a server software. Free? It depends. but I believe there are some open source program. Please let me know if you disagree or find more accurate answer.

definitely. Microsoft has its own version, but you can also find other vendor's IPS and IDS to work with MS server 2012.

IDS and IPS are a type of software, and you can get many different implementations of that type of software from different vendors. There are for example open source IDS and IPS software available for Linux and you can put your windows server 2012 behind a linux machine.
