It's great to see your videos everytime on different topics and discuss the nuance of the topic and how it can be interpreted at an individual level.I'd say it's extra-ordinary.That's because,it takes the examinees to the level that is easy to understand what is the effective method to score 7 and more than that Thanks & regards......

Stumbled upon this video 2 days before my exam and all the while being taught by the review center I go to, to paraphrase. I had to make last minute changes to the way I write. Effective paraphrasing is the best tip here and an answer should start from the 1st sentence. I got an 8 in my writing. Thanks, guys.

Traffic jams in urban areas lead to severe health issues such as lung cancer, asthma, and other respiratory diseases. In general, this affects people’s quality of life, including dissatisfaction of people regarding living their life in order. The solution to these problems is fast and comfortable public transportation. To begin with, traffic congestion contributes significantly to adverse health issues. The major cause of traffic congestion is the enormous counting of the moving vehicles on the roads so that people have to wait more hours during rush hours. As a result, vehicles emit a large number of chemical gases such as carbon dioxide and monoxide, which are the main cause of air pollution and degrade air quality. Therefore, asthma is not an uncommon disease among people. For instance, my cousin's brother has to go to Delhi for his further studies, although he did not have any health problems in his village before going to Delhi, now he is facing respiratory issues for 2 years. Therefore, he said to his parents,” he will come back as soon as possible. Similarly, traffic jams affect people’s quality of life. The quality of life is the perceived satisfaction of people regarding living their life in order so that increasing dissatisfaction among people is caused by traffic congestion. To exemplify, people get more frustrated and annoyed, whenever they are stuck in traffic jams during the day. Thus, it not only disrupts the people’s daily routines but also their lifestyles. Consequently, people face problems like wastage of time, when they spent more hours on the roads and they have to delay to reach their destinations such as workplace, meeting,s, and activities. For example, I recently missed my government exam because of a traffic jam, which I had to face in Ludhiana city where my exam venue was, the exam was conducted by government officials. Furthermore, to eradicate this problem government should take a concrete step. This step can be for the condition of public transportation as public transportation is time-consuming and uncomfortable. People have to travel by their vehicle when the public transportation does not match their expectations. Government should promote public transportation by making it fast and comfortable. For example, in Delhi, the traffic congestion has improved after launching the metro. Everybody prefers to go by this now because it is not only providing fast and comfortable services but also giving air conditioning service. In conclusion, traffic congestion in towns not only increases acute health issues, and lung cancer but also influences people’s quality of life. I explain in the above paragraphs that I certainly agree with this notion. The solution to this issue can be removed by promoting public transportation

is it important to use connectors in the starting of all sentences ? and is it important to write at least 2 reasons in every body paragraph or explaining one reason clearly ?
@Oxfordonlineenglish16 жыл бұрын
Good questions. If you're aiming for a score above 6.0, I would ignore any advice that says, "Always do X" or "Always do Y," unless it's specifically mentioned in the IELTS scoring scheme. You can't write a good essay from a template! Use connectors where it makes sense to do so in order to show the connections between your ideas. In your body paragraphs, make sure you have one central focus, which you justify with your supporting ideas. It's not about having a fixed number of reasons.

Paraphrase is best trick to show that we got the topic correctly.. If we start without paraphrase it feels like we are starting from the middle so does the examiner.. Paraphrase is not there in the criteria but better strategy to begin an essay.
@Oxfordonlineenglish13 жыл бұрын
You're right in that paraphrase is the most common starting strategy, so in many cases it's what the examiner expects to see. However, the points from the video still stand: paraphrase is not strictly necessary, and it can do more harm than good if you do a bad job.

What about the structure of an IELTS introduction?? Hook Body Thesis
@Oxfordonlineenglish16 жыл бұрын
Your introduction doesn't really need a structure. It should only be 2-3 sentences. A high-scoring introduction needs an intelligent paraphrase and a clear thesis statement. If you're a good writer and you have spare time, adding a hook can help you to use some interesting language, but it's not necessary, even for high scores.

Nice, Feroz! Here are a few tips: 1) 'They are capable to be replaced with them...'. This is a little confusing, what do 'they' and 'them' refer to? 2) 'We are going to see' is not bad, but it is better to use something like 'I am going to discuss' to explain that it is your own argument. Hopefully that helps!

But all the "IELTS" publications by Cambridge University indicates the paraphrasing is a good way to start the writing. Why is that?
@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
The point isn't whether paraphrasing is a good way to start or not. The point is that it's not always necessary, and that it's better not to do it than to do it badly. A lot of IELTS students get very fixated on the introduction, which is a less important part of the essay, and then have less time for other, more important things (e.g. planning, writing well-developed body paragraphs, etc.).

This video does something very irresponsible. It starts off by emphasizing how you should NOT paraphrase at all, but then in the second half of the video goes about HOW to PARAPHRASE. The proper way this video should have been framed was: You should NOT paraphrase IN THIS SPECIFIC WAY, or HERE IS A BAD PARAPHRASE. But to make a blanket statement and say "DONT PARAPHRASE AT ALL" will only confuse many students and leave them clueless. Bad presentation
@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, Sahar. Maybe it could be clearer, but what you say is not actually what we say in the video. We're not saying 'Don't paraphrase ever.' The point is conditional: if your target score is
@sahar-os2cy4 жыл бұрын
@@Oxfordonlineenglish1 at minute 1:13 you make a clear and direct statement "You DONT need to paraphrase," and you built on to that, without ever saying, "IF you are band 6 and below student," this conditional clause makes a HUGE difference to your statement. I understand the point you were trying to make, but my confusion lies within that initial general statement in not needing to paraphrase at all. So if in the essay scoring scheme they do not ask the students to paraphrase at all, then why go on about teaching the proper paraphrasing throughout the video? Thanks :)
@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
@@sahar-os2cy I see! Those are good points, and I agree that it could have been clearer. Once again, I do appreciate the feedback. I'd like to add three things here: 1) The score scheme says nothing about paraphrasing; it's not a direct requirement for any band score. 2) The introduction is not generally a big factor in your band score unless you get something wrong (which many IELTS candidates do, unfortunately). To look at it another way, a bad introduction can hurt your score, but a good introduction won't help it much. BUT: 3) IELTS essays are generally taught in a certain way, and IELTS examiners, who read the essays *very* fast when scoring them, expect essays to follow certain patterns. Since so many sources say 'paraphrase the question', examiners may expect you to do this and may not take the time to understand what you're doing if you take a different approach. Plus, paraphrasing is not useless; it can demonstrate range of vocabulary and also show the examiner that you understand the nuances of the question. (3) is a difficult point to deal with, for both IELTS candidates and teachers. IELTS examiners (based on conversations I've had) are not entirely consistent with how they interpret scoring criteria.
