Its a scientific fact that when two objects meet ( tree hitting the ground), it makes a sound, heat and, maybe, a tiny amount of light. It doesn't matter whether there is anyone around to hear it, or not. Sound still occurs.

That was a splendid in-depth video, Mr. Jason! I actually heard this question last year in my studies of acoustics and waves in physics and my answer is parallel to yours! I actually adore when physics, chemistry,biology, math, psychology and philosophy all join the table!

Finally. Thank you. That gave me enough fuel to start an argument, discussion.

The energy conversion argument is "sound" pun intended. But it would suffice with a simple causal argument. Since the presence or absense of the listener is not affecting the process, the process will be the same in both the presence and the absence of the listner. Great video! :)

I am glad that you made a video about sound and last time I was watching your content I quoted a famous British philosopher who proposed this question which is the title of your presentation. Thank you for responding to my comment in the form of this presentation.👍

To your point, the tree falling causes pressure waves that are outside our typical audible range. If it only produced those, then we would believe a tree was silent when it fell. It also generates heat with infrared waves that are outside our visible spectrum, they are there we just cannot see them.

Wow, I first checked out your site to give my son an alternative in learning about math techniques; didn't realize I would be more intrigue than him. This brings me back to electronics 101 and philosophy 101; I love the blend of the two and the scientific explanation. Your illustration resonated (pun intended) with me. LOL :) From a religious perspective; I stand in awe in the complex, seemingly effortless and intricate inner workings of the body; indeed, we are designed by the master planner...God himself! Keep up the good work.

No ears equals no sound. You only have vibrating air molecules, but it takes an ear to complete the sound equation.
@BeatlesBowieKrimson6 сағат бұрын
I disagree. You're implying that if a human isn't a participant in something, then it doesn't happen. Which - clearly - is not the case.

@ Well, animals have ears. Animal ears do count. But without ears, you only have vibration.

If the occultation occurs thru a speaker 🔈 and on the negative side of the speaker that returns to the amp or radio you put a mic in series with the negative side only aren’t you able to send sound as it oscillates back??

Again, amazing video, very educational... I also think there is no sound unless there's a mechanism to convert the pressure waves in to sound. That's all they are, is, particles in the air bunched up together on a certain pattern. Depending on frequency, amplitude etc... But that's not sound. It's like when we convert EM radiation in space to sound... It must be converted. Great video. Thanks, again.

Many sets of ears are likely to interpret those pressure waves as sound in a forest. Those of small and possibly large animals, birds, reptiles, insects, etc. Just because no human is around to hear it doesn't mean it isn't heard.

It's funny to hear you say, near the end, that something you said "does touch a little on philosophy, a little bit...", when the entire video is an exercise in philosophy. Silly scientist, philosophy's for everyone! lol Great video, as usual.

I thought air pressure was due to the weight of all the atmosphere above us. Not the size or mass of molecules down here versus up a thousand feet. Or did I misunderstand him?

I say yes, the vibrations that make a sound where ever they are exist whether or not the human ear picks them up. They vibrate through the surroundings and that is good enough for me! Also, if you want to know which came first the chicken or the egg I say neither! There was some form of evolution that started in the sea that eventually became a chicken...which then laid the eggs! However, I would think the closer of the two would be the egg!

I think sound and light are fundamentally energy waves that travel through space or some medium. Requiring a human to hear the sound or see the light in for it to exist is a strange requirement. If we have a detector that converts the sound or light to an electrical signal; that is displayed on a computer monitor does that now mean the vibrations or energy waves are now sound and light simply by virtue of being detected? To me, that is a ludicrous restriction to impose. If a tree falls it creates a sound. Whether a human hears the sound or a transducer converts the sound to an electrical signal is immaterial to the exist of the sound. Same for an explosion that creates light. The light is created and transmitted whether a human sees it or a photocell detects it.

Sound is easy, it's vibrations in the air . . And with sound we can experience the Doppler effect, but astronomers try to tell us about the Doppler effect with light and it don't wash with me. Not the same thing at all.

The rest of the world, like the ground the tree hits, the air, etc, will all still feel that vibration. That counts. Spiders can't hear, but they'll definitely know!

simply depends on the definition of sound. pertubation of material or reception of pertubation by biological sound receptor.

Of course the tree makes a sound when it falls...if you are not there when it falls, you just can't hear it.
@drumtwo4seven2 күн бұрын
MY ANSWER IS You need a source to create a sound, there has to be a medium to carry the sound waves, lastly there needs to be a receiver to receive the sound waves If all three are present then yes the falling tree will make a sound But if you're not there to hear it, you being the receiver then no it doesn't make sound This is why in outer space 🌌🚀 you can't hear someone else when they talk since there is no compression and rarefaction of air molecules necessary to carry the sound
@sankarde19082 күн бұрын
The question is actually of quantum mechanical perspective. The answer didn't touch quantum mechanics at all. I feel, it is the probability of hearing the sound by anybody. Hearing is the measurement of the sound here. The close anybody is to the forest, the probability increases.
@Burgee_01Күн бұрын
If so, if we are hearing it, shouldn't we be interfering with the energy from the sound for us to hear it?
