Discrimination is not just in college scholarships. It occurs in all public service fields, police, firefighters, paramedics. I want someone who has truly earned the position to come to my need, not someone who scored extra points because of the color of their skin.

I have my own story regarding diversity. As the white, Valedictorian of my high school class during the 1970's I received not even one scholarship despite coming from a low-income family. So, I attended junior college while also working to pay my own way through college as my parents were not able to help me. That allowed me to live at home, but pay for my own tuition costs, books, transportation, and other fees. My final semester while getting homework assistance from my calculus professor, a man interrupted our session. He was with Gulf Oil and had six, high paying summers jobs offers in the oilfield for minority students who were in the pre-engineering at our school. My professor told the man while I waited that there was not a single, minority student at our junior college who was in the pre-engineering program. However, he said this young man is one of our best students, is paying his own way through college, and would gladly take one of your job applications. So, that is how I got started working in the oilfield and even changing my major to better suit Gulf Oil, who became my first employer when I graduated 3 years later.

My cousin didn’t have money for college, but wanted to become a nurse. The cure that she found was, she applied at a black college, had to take them to court for refusing her. She reapplied as a minority student, and they knew about the court case, she was accepted and went for free as a minority. Yes she was picked on by the other students, but free helps you to ignore a lot. The sad thing is that with them picking on her, she could have filled more charges against the school. It is amazing how they behave when the situation is reversed, there would have been prison time for white kids picking on someone, if it was reversed.

Back in the day, I graduated #26 out of a class of 428. My grade point average was 3.85 on a 4.0 scale. I looked through 438 scholarships. I didn't qualify for a single one because I was a white male. So, I went took out student loans, got a full time job, and lived in my car when it was necessary. I paid off my student loans, I have two boys that are both Eagle Scouts, and the oldest should graduate next year with three degrees. (In 4 years) He doesn't know it, but there's a possibility that he'll be the valedictorian of the school his original major is in. He has one student loan. It's small, but my salary just wouldn't stretch one year. You have to do what it takes to make it work.

Exactly. When I went to college, I wasted a ton of time looking for scholarships for an average white guy and it was literally that...A waste of time. But if I was a woman, black, or any number of other "minority" statuses, there were books filled with scholarships I would be qualified for. And that was over 20 years ago.

When I was in grad school I actually had two professors tell me to my face that I wasn't receiving a prestigious international scholarship even though I was the most qualified for it and they were giving five of the scholarships to much less qualified minority students because the professors knew that I worked hard and would succeed on my own and the other students probably wouldn't if they weren't given the awards. I spent that summer working for minimum wage and living in a slum and survived on coffee and cold pizza while the other scholarship recipients enjoyed a luxurious summer in a foreign capital. After graduating I went to work in that field of study and none of the scholarship recipients did. They all went to work at jobs that paid the most. So much for affirmative action.

So damn true! Discrimination is discrimination no matter what. Not only in the US, but also in some country's in Europe this is a problem for decades. As a white male I've encountered discrimination more than often over the years. I missed out on opportunities because I'm a male, white, white male, too young, too old, having a learning disability, that I'm not pleasing the wright people, or because I'm suffering from mental health issues related to my job (law enforcement and first responder).

So your story about the engineering student is basically the same thing that happened to me. I was a mechanical engineering poor as crap, raised by a single mom - and did pretty well in some classes. So I would tutor this nice big girl, who was American Samoan. She could barely get through each class we took. Like she absolutely shouldn’t have been an engineer. One day she told me she’s there in a full ride academic scholarship. She also mentioned she’s trying to decide between all her job offers or pursuing a masters degree at our university. It was quite shocking. She had offers from Boeing, Lockeed Martin, and other big companies. But the sad part is even she acknowledged they’re offering her these jobs to “hit their quota”. Yet the best kids I knew in our classes weren’t getting any offers or scholarships.

In 1972-1973 I was not allowed to apply for many many scholarships because I was a white male. Only a very few scholarships were available to ALL races, not just "minorities". Most of those were little $300 to $500 grants that only helped those who could already afford college and just needed some change for beer and pizza. They always went to cheerleaders. I actually was approved for a $350 "loan" .. a LOAN .. by one university. One source stated that my father could sell his house and put me through college. Where does the rest of my family live then? "That's not our problem", I was told. I certainly hope things are better now in the 21st Century. Trouble was, teachers' pay in Puerto Rico is the lowest in the entire nation, so they offered me scholarships. Trouble was, I didn't qualify for any of them because I am Caucasian. So much for Affirmative Achievement... Talent, experience, drive or character mean nothing; only the color of your skin counts, and it better NOT be White. Isn't White Privilege great?

Tell them you identify as black or check the black, Latino or other box on applications. They will probably never ask you "how" you are not white. MANY minority scholarships and grants only use 12.5% as a qualifier.

Sorry for your loss. Dogs are so wonderful. We're going to have to send our oldest boy to the rainbow bridge on the 5th. We've had him for 13 of him 16 years. It's never easy but in the end it's the last kindness we can do for our fur babies.

We love all dogs. The one we currently have is an Anatolian. His name is Aspen and he is very large and very smart. Tee times it seems like he is trying to train us instead of us training him. He even gives us this look like he's disappointed that we haven't learned better yet. We have a game that we play with him that we call search and find. The way to GameWorks is somebody in the family that is close to where the dog is at the time will tell Aspen to find somebody. For example, if they want Aspen to find me, the person will say fine Daddy. Aspen will start sniffing around and then he'll start tracking. They're about 30 seconds he will find me whether I'm in the same building as him or if I went out to the workshop or garage. We have Aspen do that with everybody in the family. It's one of the games we play with him everyday.

I just discovered this channel last week. What a blessing this young man is to us. I am a 73 year old black woman. This man is so grounded in truth and integrity. His American spirit is contagious. I truly appreciate this guy verbalizing TRUTH with humor. I have been binge watching him today. I love the stories he tells. This man is a treasure. I had two children, both girls, however, God did not bless me with a son. If I had a son, Buddy Brown would be the son I would have desired. Mr. Brown, may you and your family be blessed.

this is so true! I was supporting myself through college. I went through two full large books of scholarships and even with my record of straight A's and A+ THERE WAS NO SCHOLARSHIP FOR A WHITE WOMAN. My English teacher was so impressed with my writing that he talked to the school and even searched himself. Nothing. There were lots of scholarships for blacks, American Indians, and Japanese. The scholarships for Blacks went all the way down to D grades! I still graduated with my Bachelors degree-it just took me 16 years.

My son Valavictorian of his class did get a full ride scholarship because of his smarts and my very low income. He had a hard time finding scholarships that he could apply for. I can remember how hard he worked for Valavictorian. I had a friend who's child didn't have half the grades my son did but different color skin get scholarship offers on top of scholarship offers. I paid all my college bills . Both my boys are now beyond high school educated and are giving back to society. There has to be a better way.

When I got out of high school years ago I was poorer than a church mouse. So I got a book that listed all the scholarships available across the nation. Out of thousands of options I was only eligible for two or three because I am Caucasian. I couldn't afford a four year school without help. I did get a two year degree from a community college and graduated magna cum laude.

Accomplishment, oroven abilities matter. We also are horribly biased by age. What’s with these self imposed limits on achieving our best … for our species- here.

When I returned from my service in the military I applied at 3 jobs I wanted a police man a state trooper or a fire fighter … I went through the whole thing taking the mental tests the physical tests and came out on top I really tried my hardest I wanted in ! I was called in and the exact words were at all 3 jobs were sorry but were only hiring minorities… and that when I left I should be in contact with a civil rights attorney! Because I qualified for all 3 jobs and I would have been hired above anyone else . But they couldn’t offer me a job . I ended up taking a state job driving a dump truck and running heavy equipment and having a crew under me . But still I often wondered what life would have been like if I actually got the jobs? It’s not right look up how many police fire and state trooper jobs were made into a career … the list is short and 99.2 % white Americans. So being discriminated against didn’t help one black family get ahead …

You hit the nail on the head when you said that we believe that whomever works hard can “ ie.go to college and succeed”…you see, this generation has grown up with affirmative action and all they know is handouts and freebies… they don’t know how to work for something… Try this on I’m 72 years of age right now born in 1950 and when I was 14 years old in the summer I went to work with my dad at the Chemical oil plant that he worked at… My salary was one dollar per hour, and at the end of the week my check after taxes were taken out was $36.50. They kept $3.50 for taxes. What did I do for that$1 an hour…I swung a two sided sickle for 8 hours in a tank field at the refinery…then I moved up in jobs..the next year I got to roll 55 gallon drums (585lbs.) for 8 hours loading 18 wheelers ALL DAY! I am only saying this to say young adults expect things to be given to them and they don’t wanna work, they don’t want to sweat, they don’t want to wake up early in the morning and have to be somewhere for 7 o’clock and get off at four and work their rear ends off in sweat and sweat and sweat. They don’t wanna do that! As a society, “society” has “Wussified” this generation…and the adults allowed that to happen! I call this generation, “the gimme generation “.

In 1990, in Canada, when I was 26, I was between jobs. I went to my local Canada Employment Center to look at the job postings on the bulletin boards. Fully one-third of them said "preference in hiring will go to a minority." Considering that Canada had a Conservative government in 1990, I knew from that moment that the best route for me was self-employment

Canadian here too, my daughter didn't get into the law school in our city because they purposely give away many of the spots to minorities, she went to another province and got wonderful marks. They are letting in the "lesser qualified" to university positions and then a lot of them end of dropping out anyways because it's too hard ....so wrong!!

White male here....at one time I was rejected from 8 different agencies for student loans, I finally asked flat out why I can't get the money I need for school. Finally, one of the loan agents looked me straight in the eyes and told me "because I'm a white male with a job. If I was a black female I could have all the money I wanted".....and this was back in the 80's. I figured out how to get a good paying night job, worked my ass off and graduated 4.0 with NO debt. Fux the world.
