Ola, Pessoas! This episode, we're revisiting the "How Aliens Would Reconstruct the Animal" meme and seeing what happens when our very own resident extra-terrestrial paleontologist attempts to rebuild animals from their skulls alone!
We also are paid a visit by some buddies from Brazil, who have strong opinions on the reconstruction of animals and aren't afraid to let us know!

As a person who is going to go to school for Paleontology, I have to admit: I love this meme. It's based upon the old trend in paleoart of "shrinkwrapping" dinosaurs, meaning applying the skin directly to the bones, leaving the dinosaur looking rather anemic. Mark Witton's blog is a great place to learn more! Your art and ideas of what a extant creature's skull looks like under an alien's perspective is awesome! The reason for the skulls are so odd looking is because they're mammal skulls: mammals have an odd amount of musculature outside of their skulls, to power their lips and jaw muscles! Anyways, you've earned a like and subscription!

This! I grew up on the bad shrinkwrap dinosaur artwork. It was so prevalent that's tarnished world's concept of what a dinosaur should look like, even scientists. I'm glad science finally woke up and thought a little bit deeper about what dinosaur soft tissues might have been, and that we have this meme mocking it enough so hopefully kids (and the rest of us) won't make the same mistake. And now I need to go see this Mark Witton guy.

We've found a skull of a large-skulled dinosaur. It was clearly pachycephalosaur-like due to its thick skull, but had flat and sharp front teeth instead of a beak and it had forward-facing eyes, suggesting a carnivorous or at least omnivorous diet. Let's call this creature "Megacephalus deinodonta". The real owner of this skull is... a human.

It’s like the unconscious mind of whoever left that comment perceived that your video was a joke but their conscious mind just ran in the opposite direction. Like most people in the paleontologist and paleo art communities find purposely messed up dinosaurs like yours hilarious. Like there was literally a trend where all the paleoartists were drawing dinosaurs with long pendulous earlobes primarily as a joke.

My guess is as such. The guy who wrote that lengthy comment watched a video prior to watching yours, perhaps the very one made by Pirulla, and as such he Learned Something™. As he now comes across your video, riddled with things that don't coincide with the actual handling of reconstructing fossils, he thinks back to the video where he Learned Something™, and decides to teach this random guy on the internet a lesson, using his new knowledge that he pretty much learned only recently. And see, I don't fault him; it's how us humans work. If we feel inferior to someone else, we'll generally utilize anything in our power to get a leg up on them. Even if it's just a completely random fact from somewhere, the fact that we Learned Something™ that the person we envy doesn't, is a great item of leverage, in particular if it concerns their own field of knowledge. "You say you're a [profession], yet you don't know about [basic thing], which means your entire profession and persona comes undone". It gives us purpose, and a sense of simply feeling good about ourselves, when we can best someone in even the most minor of things, making us feel like we've toppled their entire foundation and now stand above them. Gotta love the "grow up", too. Us humans are never too underhanded to pull a quip against someone whenever we get the chance.

Okay… IN THE COMMENTS DEFENSE!!! I think they were expecting an educational video on how a skull reconstruction was formed, and comparing your results to see how close it would be to the real thing. If thats what they wanted they would be severely disappointed. Also acknowledging the language barrier here. Even though online someone may appear fluent, the more complex subtleties of language can still be very difficult. As an example, “I want to purchase this watch” would be fine, but “i saw this watch, I don’t want that one but do you have something with a similar dial?” Would be more likely to not be communicated correctly. EDIT: i am actually shocked as to how close i was.

The "shrink-wrapped" reconstructions were a thing, though. The underlying point is that reconstructing soft tissue from bone fossils alone is very much a matter of guess work. Also, he isn't really addressing contemporary reconstructions, but reconstructions that were made in the late 19th century, but persisted in popular science into the 1990s. If shrink-wrapping was still a thing, there would not be a meme about it.

@@blkgardner Not much of guess work when you got a species almost completely right like the nodosaur.
@blkgardner
@blkgardner Жыл бұрын
@@spinosaurusstriker Have you seen a nodosaur in real life? We only think that this or that reconstruction of an animal is right because it's close to the current consensus of the moment. And "consensus" generally means the last peer-reviewed article to go viral. Or to phrase it another way. If, in 1930, the Angel Gabriel handed you an accurate reconstruction of Spinosaurus, the paleontologists of the day would assert that is cartoonish drawing of a water dragon, and bore little resemblance to the actual animal. And, without more source material and improved scientific methods, there would be no disprove the scientific consensus of the day.

the funny thing about the bat part in 09:49 is that's exactly what happened with an actual group of dinosaurs,the scansorioptergidae,which was originally thought to be a small dinosaur with a niche like an eye-eye,but recent fossils of the dinosaur Yi and Ambopteryx,show that the scansoriopterygids were winged gliders/fliers with membranous skin connecting their fingers togwther,just like bat wings. what is interesting about them is that they also possess feathery fuzz as well as having wing made of membranes,essentially a dinosaurian bat

Although I'm not a big fan of the hate for feathered dinosaurs, the topic of "what would future paleontologists discovered modern animals" isn't a new thing, most notably featured in the book "all yesterdays". Ironically, inaccurate Reconstructions are still happening today. Recently, a strange skull was discovered, fossilized in amber, with a long toothed snout and a large braincase. It was assumed it was a small dinosaur, with an appearance strikingly similar to a hummingbird, but, as it turns out, it was a prehistoric lizard. On that topic, i'd love to see you do a part 3 (i doubt you'd do it because it's been 2 years lmao), which has feathers on the dinosaurs, to drive the point home, as most people assume a feathered dinosaur is an accurate one, even if it isn't the case.
