@@iamthehype3684 Jeremy is correct. Breathing pure oxygen is harmful and can be toxic. People on oxygen are not just breathing the oxygen from the tank, they are also breathing the surrounding air. The tank of oxygen is supplementing the oxygen they are breathing from the air. I believe his point was about breathing ONLY the pure oxygen.

Like so many other medications out there. Some acne meds can cause suicidal thoughts. but at least one can be monitored and kept safe (in hospital if need be) until the true effect of the meds can be determined. taking heart meds can have permanent consequences from a risk that lasts indefinitely yet hardly anyone bashes those.

maddokcan Well, I've never heard of anyone feeling euphoria when going to the gym, but getting back on target: You have misread me. Positive psychology teaches people to subject happiness on themselves, and if they can't subject happiness on themselves,-like they are supposed to believe- than they should take drugs to help them get their. Either way, its implied that you should artificially manifest happiness, when in reality, emotions don't work that way. I am not here to discredit the reality of depression, and thank you for your information about the drugs, but I am speaking in the perspective of a man indifferent to the idea of blocking out unpleasant thoughts, when, for most people, what we should really be doing is working out those unpleasant emotions. Sadness and anger don't just exist to give us a hard time,, after all.

Those warnings actually lies too. If you don't have suicidal or homicidal thoughts to begin with, taking anti depressants can't make them magically appear, just like they don't make them magically disappear. That means, if you already have them, then in a depressed state they are likely either supressed or used as a fixation point, because in a depressed state you aren't energetic enough to act on them. However, if you uncontrollably take antidepressants while having suicidal, homicidal or any other obsessions, you might end up in a situation, where you don't have enough time to asses your options (if you take too high of a dose, or if you're isolated yourself, and don't have anyone to talk to), you're energetic enough to act on your obsessions and from a fixation points they become actual goals, since you don't have any other goals at this very moment.

Exactly. Like, I don't get mad very often (as in week or months go by when I'm just casual) but the moment I do, my grandmother insists that I have mood swings, so a doctor gave me some medication to regulate that. Except that it had no effect because I never had symptoms to begin with. So naturally the doctor upped my dosage like every other day.

"We don't know how depression works so we don't know how antidepressants work" No, we don't know why depression happens to a particular individual because there are so many different factors that can exist separately or overlap with each other and so almost every case of depression, while capable of being categorised, is unique, and therefore we don't know what medication will work for an individual patient until we try one due to a combination of how their biological make-up affects not only their receptiveness to certain chemicals, but also the nature of their depressive disorder.
@comentingchannel

For example, if one drug is effective for a parent, it's much more likely to be effective for their child. Not only that but some people have purely chemical depression that will go away with medicine, for some people they only have life issues to sort out because they've lived with depression for so long it's affected their ability to function in general, like how someone may have a permanent limp in the future if their broken leg isn't treated properly during the healing process

And the idea that depression is so mysterious and complicated that it's impossible to determine its etiology is potentially very dangerous. A lot of doctors take "depression" as a self-explanatory diagnosis and medicate accordingly. But, say, thyroid damage, whether by autoimmune disease or cancer, can also cause depression; so the idea that one doesn't need to look any further after diagnosing depression allows those diseases to progress. Even after it was obvious my thyroid was the problem, it took me years to find a psychiatrist who would base my treatment plan on the results of regular blood panels rather than going by How Sad I Felt.

Since we don't know how the brain fundamentally works, we don't know how any mental illness works or how medications work. It's not a chemical imbalance and who the fuck knows really? Antidepressants create an artificial condition that your brain has to compensate around. This compensation is the false happy feeling you get until your brain becomes so tolerant to the drugs that maybe it changes permanently or something (who knows? not psychiatrists) and they stop working. Then it's time for the next one and the next one until the healthcare industry has milked your insurance for every penny it can and you are a husk of what you once were that you can't really even remember.

There will always be more research to be done to improve medication and yes the pharmaceutical companies make big money however let's be real I wonder how many companies would be interested in developing a product if no money was to be made...? Easy way to combat depression is hobbies. Do something that makes you happy. Whether its games, watching movies, or hell even releasing sexual tension as your body literally can't tell the difference from stress and sexual stress. What ever releases dopamine generally will help you. Also avoid depressing shit. Like movies that have a bad ending or bittersweet or a show that is overly dramatic that pulls on your heart strings.Basically avoid what puts you down and focus on what builds you up. Medicines can help but really if you do what I said it can get you off of it. Just manage your emotions. It may sound hard but all you need to do is stuff you like. And if it literally requires no effort like tv shows or movies then all the more easier to fight the lack of motivation depression can cause.

As someone who has suffered bipolar depression and only recently got medicated, I can safely say that medication is _worth it._ I was lucky enough that the very first one I tried has worked, and I cannot _believe_ the increase in the quality of my life. And this is from someone who was anti-medication for ages because I was medicated for the wrong thing when I was younger. EDIT: There seems to be a bit of a debate whether mental illness is all in one's head. All I can say on that front is that if you believe that, then you are either very lucky you have never experienced the type of mental illness that takes control of your life whether or not you try to think your way out of it, or you are in denial about what you are suffering. If it is the latter, I hope you can find some way to get help. Even if you believe it is all in your mind, I hope you can at least see a therapist to help you better take control of what's going on in there.

This was funny and on point as always although this one kinda resonated with me a bit more. I was on anti-depressants for over 10 years and by that point I truly thought I needed them even though I always felt "bleh" anyways. If I ever missed doses I'd go through horrible withdrawals. Finally after having enough of dealing with so-so doctors and pharmacies giving me trouble filling my meds I just stopped taking them cold turkey. it was hell for a few weeks but you know what? I haven't felt this good in years! I've lost weight,I'm more sociable and outgoing,and i actually feel like leaving my house and doing things. Just goes to show you medicating yourself isn't always the best course of action. I swear sometimes it seems these doctors (some not all) just prescribe you stuff so you have to keep coming back to them for refills. Sorry for the Essay but for me this video warranted it.

I once thought like you. I was put on a new antidepressant drug back in the 90s after my father died to deal with my depression, panic attacks, and anxiety. I was on it for a few years. I hated how it made me feel (no emotion), but once I was off them, I used to always give them credit for keeping me "alive". That simply wasn't true. After being on a few more antidepressants and anti-anxiety meds, I learned quickly that these drugs do more harm than good. I'm not saying that they're entirely unnecessary, as some people who have severe chemical imbalances could use some SSRI inhibitors or enhancers. However, you'll find that 95% or more of the population don't need them. The video is absolutely correct in pointing out the high level of dependency these drugs and the doctors/psychiatrists who prescribe them to you want you to have. You're made to believe that you "need" these drugs to survive or live a normal life. The pharmaceutical company makes billions on the average Joe who's doctor was paid a nice bonus to prescribe the drug to you. Most people are aware of how addicting Xanax is, right? It is one of the most prescribed anti-anxiety/panic attack drug out there, and for good reason. You'll keep wanting more and more of it, thinking if you don't take it, something terrible will happen. It's insane. I was put on it for years and let me tell you, weening off of it was a nightmare. The withdrawal symptoms were intense and my mind was a mess. However, what really turned me around on what Xanax truly did for me was the first time it "failed" me. I used to have severe panic attacks and I'd always take a Xanax when they happened. But one day, the Xanax did nothing. I still had my symptoms and that made me panic even more. It took me awhile to realize I needed to help myself and not rely on medication that wasn't really doing anything for me. All Xanax is is a muscle relaxer and it puts you to sleep. That's it. Upon realizing that and so many other things regarding these drugs, my life changed. I knew I didn't actually need those drugs. All I needed was better coping tools, a good therapist, and better ways of managing stress. I also desperately needed to heal the trauma I held onto from childhood. I'm still working on that to this day, but it's doing so much more good than any drug ever could. So, unless you were diagnosed with a severe chemical imbalance in the brain, which might make you want to kill people for fun, then I'm here to tell you that antidepressants did not save your life. YOU did. I'm sure you were told to do other things while taking them. No doctor or therapist worth their degree would tell you to JUST take the drugs and make no lifestyle changes. Think back on all the things you learned and changed along the way. That didn't happen because of some drugs. You changed as a person for the better. Give yourself the credit you deserve. The drug deserves none of it. You have the power to change yourself and you did. Don't let your doctor or a bad therapist tell you that you're stuck being depressed without drugs. Putting you on medication is their way of giving up or being lazy. A good doctor or therapist will work hard to get you through your depression and get to the root cause of why it's there. If you never heal the root cause, the anxiety and depression will never truly go away. That's why people stay on these awful medications their whole lives. They don't understand what it takes to actually get better.

@exantiuse497
@exantiuse497 3 жыл бұрын
Antidepressants don't "induce to suicide". Depressed people sometimes commit suicide, and depressed people also use antidepressants, therefore sometimes people using antidepressants commit suicide, not because of the drug, but because of the mental ìllness the drug was used to treat. Of course these drugs aren't without their side effects, but they aren't supposed to be used without a good reason, i.e. only for severe depression with risk of suicide or disability, not for mild depression or just bad mood. If the illness can lead to death or disability, one can accept the risk of side effects, do you not agree?

Okay so suicide risk is higher for people who start antidepressants within the first week or so but there is a reason for it. Lots of them work by delaying the reuptake of seretonin in your synapses which basically bridge the gap an electrical impulse has to cross so you can feel things. So early on, it hasnt had the chance to properly make you *feel* better but it gives you more energy and motivation to plan a suicide attempt - and better planning makes them more dangerous. So they do work if you get the right ones and ride through that early period. The additional suicidality is, weirdly, the first step to them making you better. It just needs to be accompanied with careful planning, awareness from loved ones and a very good crisis plan

I'm not sure why, but something about this rubs me the wrong way. I do agree that antidepressant commercials are flowery garbage, but I think it sends the wrong message about antidepressants themselves. Before I was diagnosed with chronic depression four years ago, I was terrified of antidepressants for these exact reasons, that they don't REALLY work and it's all placebo, that they turn you into a zombie, that depression is just "feeling sad briefly" and pills aren't needed you just need to lighten up already! But now I can confidently say going on antidepressants was the best choice I ever made. I started on a low dose of Prozac and have since changed to a moderate dose of Effexor and Risperdone, and finding that medication that works is a wonderful feeling. Pills aren't scary, and I hate that it's thought to be necessary to paint them as these addictive little tablets that you pop like candy to no avail while still feeling like you want to die. It creates a stigma against finding the right help for a real illness. I don't know, that's just what I took away from this.

Guys, I did an entire year on how different anti-depressants work. Some prevent the re-uptake of serotonin into the brain thereby keeping the brain's "happy chemical" around for longer. Some simulate serotonin and cause the same reaction that serotonin would cause. There's medications which affects the more physical aspects of depression or panic attacks, such as heartbeat. The problem is that as if the brain wasn't immensely complicated in its own right, everyone's brain is different, so when they try something and it doesn't work, it's not them throwing anything they can at you beacuse they have no idea what they're doing- it's hard! It's really hard to find medication for emotional problems! Doctors pescribe medication because according to the charts, this should work for you- but again, everyone is different. It even depends on what's causing the depression to begin with- medication never helped me, but my depression was caused by faulty cognitions and grief rather than chemicals. So, yeah, YOU might not know how they work, but anyone who knows anything about this knows that it's so much more complicated than we could possibly figure out in a single lifetime.
@grodon909

So basically, you know the mechanisms, most of which are implied by the names (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor? I wonder how that works!) but like everyone else don't know how it works, or why it only affects certain groups of people with depression, or why it's the DoC for other disorders, like anxiety and related disorders, PTSD, and bulimia.

Blake - Depends on the person. I've heard of some folks going into remission, others have to stay on stuff for life. I think sometimes it depends on what type of depression you have and if you've always been deficient in that chemical. For example, mine goes in cycles so in theory we MIGHT be able to train my brain - and there's evidence my brain chemistry DID change because there came a point where the antidepressant that first worked GREAT for me started to make me more depressed instead, presumably because my brain started making those chemicals on its own again and taking the medicine tipped it out of balance in the other direction. I will, however, say that I've heard SSRIs usually have the biggest withdrawal effects. Depending on your dose if you want to try going off, you'll want to talk to your doctor and have them step it down slowly - that reduces the severity of withdrawal, since you're not cutting it out all at once. I do recommend having a friend or relative "on call" both starting new meds and stopping one, so if something goes wrong you've got another person who can come make sure you are okay and possibly nudge you to call the doctor if you're not thinking clearly enough to do so without prompting. Best of luck to you!

"We live in a society where expressing emotions is viewed as a weakness..." yeah, that's true and annoying. So many people want you to smile like a clown for them, though, but that's only "positive" emotions which are allowed. If you don't show emotions though, you "must be" a psychopath. Oh come on. If I hear something that I find funny I'll smile while laughing, but I can't fake emotions like yuppies want cashiers and waiters and so many service workers to do, or like me when I rang bells and guarded buckets for the Salvation Army, sometimes customers of the overpriced clothes stores would stop and instruct me as to how I'm supposed to be always smiling for their hedonistic narsisistic selves while it's 20 below zero Fahrenheit outside and my teeth already hurt from the cold. Come on.

Benevolens Psittacorum That's just factually not true. Emotion in modern society is encouraged much more than in the past which is why you have encouragement of politically correct language. In the past when masculinity norms were different you were expected to show less emotion.

There’s a whole science dedicated to this. The chemicals are called neurotransmitters, and if you don’t have enough of a certain neurotransmitter, then you may have chronic depression. It really depends on the diagnosis and how you react to certain medications. They do work for a select group of people, but not everybody. That’s why there is such a wide range of antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-psychotics, and much more.

That's exactly the point: they can't predict which one is for whom yet. It's OK there are many, because everybody reacts differently; the problem is we are but guinea pigs, and it even worsen some people's condition. "First do no harm", said some prominent doctor a long time ago...

After Covid I had to get a full time job in eCommerce retail. The fact that I was put into a position to have a routine (usu) 9-5 schedule I’ve been feeling better and haven’t been on the low-mood anti-depressants that I started on a couple of years before March. Amazing how the nature of Circadian rhythm and how natural structure for living can make all the difference.

Most people doesn't mean all people. First and foremost, we all need social contexts; family, friends, ideally both. Supportive people we have mutually beneficial relationships with, where we are both getting and giving in a meaningful way (not just being on a figurative emotional IV from someone, or being that for someone). But yes, some people deal with more intense depression than others and might need some further help. Chemicals may or may not be that.

I am currently medicated and I am in the process of accepting my possibilities of illness unlike before. I am also eager to get well (unlike before).

If you don't know what causes depression and what makes it go away, it's actually quite simple and the medical industry knows this but hides it from the public so they can sell their stupid drugs that makes people feel nothing. Ok, so here it is: Your brain needs seratonin. It's a normal hormone in the brain. People sometimes calls it the feel good hormone. Cause that's one of the things it does. Puts you in a good mood. One thing that helps your brain to absorb seratonin when you have too little seratonin in your brain (that's depression) is tryptophan. Tryptophan is a natural protein in the body that opens the "door" for seratonin to get into your brain. But our bodies doesn't make tryptophan, we need to take it in in our diet. Turkey and chicken is rich in tryptophan. And tryptophan helps you sleep better also. Which gives you more energy, more seratonin, better concentration (seratonin helps you concentrate too) and no depression. Other things helps too. Exercise to get rid of the toxins in your body. The colours blue and green in nature releases seratonin in your brain. Looking up at the blue sky, head tilted up, releases seratonin in your brain. So, eat chicken, go jogging and rock climbing, drink lots of water, walk in the garden. And in these times, one of the things that helps most, is hugs from your family (of course now the ones that lives with you). But you won't be cured if you do all this and you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Listen to the New Testament in one day, and choose Jesus. I have been there, I know what I'm talking about.

That shouldn't stop people from trying them out if they're suffering from legit depression. All medication has the potential to kill you. Beta blockers can cause fatal arrhythmia, aspirin can cause brain bleed, anti-inflammatories can cause liver damage or heart failure. And so many can cause camcer. If someone starts experiencing suicidal thoughts, they should be monitored or if it's really bad, hospitalized until the effects of the antidepressants kick in.

I'm on a combo of Wellbutrin, which by itself makes me less depressed but seething ball of firy hot anger; and lexapro, which was basically made to throw cold water on the firy anger leaving meh a kind of "oh well" attitude all day every day. This "meh" attitude seems to have spread to my thyroid, causing my metabolism to slow down and put on 20 lbs; but again, oh well. I'm not sure if it's a good thing, but it really doesn't feel like it; plus if I don't take it, well, look up side effects for SSRI medications, take the absolute worst sounding side effects from the list (nausea, a skin crawling sensation, and an endless series of what I can only describe as electrical shocks all over your body every few seconds), and stretch that out over a month. Hmmm, I don't know how to end this comment; oh well.
