"My day at Big GameDev Studios" First thing in the morning is our yoga class. Then we get breakfast at the decked out restaurant in the office building. Then it's time to socialize and catch up with my friends. After that we grab some coffees, gotta be prepared for those emails *tihi*. I usually get through 2 emails before our mandated wellness hug therapy. Then i usually have enough energy to write 1 line of code before lunch at our free michelin star buffet.
@kirbyjoe74847 ай бұрын
Nah, a big game studio certainly has the 2 hour mandatory wellness and productivity meeting slapped in the middle of everyday, but the restaurant is a fridge full of mountain dew and energy drinks along side a microwave, a pot of overly strong stale coffee, and some vending machines. The 2 emails are replaced by half a dozen or more that are all from different people and departments. Most are long, boring and completely irrelevant to your work but hidden amongst them might be a few key sentences that you absolutely can't risk missing, such as "The higherups think all the sexy armor and bad*ass skins you were working on as advancement and achievement rewards for the last month might anger women advocacy groups on social media so they need to all be reworked and toned down. Also, the achievement and reward system your team designed needs to be scrapped and we want it turned into a flashy microtransaction driven ingame store using a new purchasable currency. Also we would like you to design a purchasable loot boxes system including some consumable EXP multiplier items as rewards, but try to do it in a way that will not anger players. We understand this is a tall order since the game is releasing 2 weeks from now but we have reassigned everyone from the bug fixing and game engine optimizing team to work with you. They might need to be re-trained first, since none of them have experience as graphic artists or GUI designers. Also consider this your two weeks notice as we will be closing your studio upon launch of this new title to serve as a tax write off for the parent company. Thank you for all your hard work. We couldn't have done it without you. The game has broken all our presale goals thanks in part to the stunning work done by you and the other graphic artists who worked on the trailers, so we will be providing those bonuses that were promised in the form this these generous 50% off coupons for the deluxe platinum edition of the game that can be redeemed directly at our official storefront. Have a nice day."

It's not that the devs themselves are being lazy, but more so the unnecessarily long and bureaucratic process to get even a single change into the game, and the exponential amount of bugs that occur because of the amount of systems interacting with eachother.
@Entropy67Ай бұрын
@@justaperson8852 if you have exponential amount of bugs occurring in your game as you develop, you simply have no idea what your doing. The entire point of differentiating systems is isolating logic and bugs to specific scopes, so that you don't have to worry about everything else as you make your one part. The problem is that bureaucratic process, that stems from incompetent management. And when you have incompetent management you don't really need to hire competent engineers either, but with how the market is, I'm sure there's good talent they are suppressing anyways. There's gonna be good indie games popping up in the future. Hell I'm making a game engine right now, so maybe one of them will be made by me.

Making a game template from ready-made tools is the easiest part. 10 years ago, when I launched Unity, I also created a game in which you can run around a location like in an RPG. And it took me 15 minutes after the first launch of Unity. Simply because there was a button to add a location, and a button to add a humanoid character, in the case of a video, all that was left was to download the desired skin
@thomgizziz11 ай бұрын
No no it is not. He followed a tutorial... I mean literally copying it, almost all of the animation and 3d models were pre-made and the game is short as hell and missing a ton of things. 5 years isn't going to help as much as you think with just one person especially if they don't really care. If he would have opened visual studio and programmed a whole engine from scratch and made a pretty shitty looking game that did the same in 2 weeks then there is reason to be impressed. You are like a child that is amazed by something really simple because they don't understand how it is done.

Making a complete game IS tough. Having tools like UE5 makes it a lot easier for sure, and we didn't have such tools over the last 30 years, so it was tougher then. Also don't forget the 80/20 rule, which also means that you can get 80% of the game done in the first 20% of your schedule, but then the 20% closing details take the remaining 80% of time. And multiplayer adds a ton of complexity. Game design details add complexity. Multiple maps, game saves, etc add complexity.

17:06 It's not hard to make games if you just asset flip and pull other peoples code off the internet through forums. Actually making a game yourself is very difficult. It also can vary depending on the type of game. Example of this in the video is how the dev made the skeleton small and reused animations because he didn't want to invest actual time into just animating 1 boss which is minor task for an entire game. A colossus sized boss like it originally was would've been so much cooler but it'd take more effort to set up. Could've had a cool cutscene animation too but instead it's the dude smiling and saying bankai

I think the hardest part of game developing are on those parts that are usually not given priority. He was able to make it in two weeks because the stage assets are pre-made. But if you'll do the whole dungeon area, including the mechanics, interaction, probably a few mazes, it'll at least take you half a year. That includes fixing the bugs and other minor stuff that becomes big if it stacks. But compared to years ago, because the engines and the entirety of the internet has pre-made assets, animations, etc, yes the game development is much easier. Iremember watching my dad make a tic tac toe from DOS and BAT and it took him a week, probably more, and that's a simple tic tac toe with nothing on it but as in tic tac toe. But now, a tic tac toe can be made in a few mins, max is a few hours with a few copy paste and some if-then commands. The game development really is far easier now than before.

I've worked in game dev before. I actually watched the original video before Asmongold saw it. I couldn't wait to see his reaction. Not disappointed. Making a game in 2 weeks isn't that hard. Making a really good game with lots of content and polish is a different story. It's actually pretty common for game devs to make small games like this in their spare time just to try out new stuff, etc.
@Zondels11 ай бұрын
True. I feel like the most difficult thing in making games is just to come up with some unique idea or twist for the game to make it interesting. And also writing the story.
@ExpensivePizza11 ай бұрын
@@ZondelsYeah I'd have to agree. Story has been especially challenging for me. Although, when it comes to ideas I would suggest just trying stuff out and not taking it too seriously. Often the best ideas are discovered through play rather than created with thoughts.
@jesperjohansson695911 ай бұрын
Game devs often use premade assets and animations like this to prototype ideas in a matter of days... But you can't actually build a complete game that way, because you'd be at the mercy of whatever assets you can find which would cripple your creative freedom and lead to a bland, janky end-product.
@ExpensivePizza11 ай бұрын
@@jesperjohansson6959 You might be surprised how many successful good games use premade assets. The key is striking a balance between you own creative art style and picking assets that fit with your game. When it's done well players don't even notice. When it's done poorly the games come across as cheap asset flips. As a game dev I notice this stuff all the time. I've literally purchased assets on the asset store and seen the exact same assets in wildly successful titles. But again, if it's done well and those assets fit the art style most players don't actually notice.

3:29 yea thats how it works now, anyone can pick up unreal, get code and assets from other people to just build their game like this and call it their own, I knew someone just like that. The man had grand dreams, but relied heavily on assets and code from others. We were friends for a time, I knew him online for about 10 years and when he asked me to work with him on his game, I agreed to learn unreal and try to make a level for it on the side. That wasnt really something I did seriously, I did for fun like we used to do when we modded other games, between friends. He had greater expectations from me tho, he kept saying I would be head designer on his game or some shit like that and he would share the profits with me on steam, etc. I didnt really want any of his money, but I said I would help anyway. The goal was to make a cheap old school shooter with a vision going against the pay to win policies, etc. So it wasnt a big deal anyway. I guess I didnt work on the map fast enough, because one day, my friend just had a mental break and decided I was shit. Without saying anything, blocked me everywhere, on discord, on steam, removed my acces to the game's dev management on steam, etc. But I was a fool. He had done the same kind of things years ago when we tried to run a gaming clan together, why did I think it would be any different? I dont know. But yea, thats the kind of people you will find making cheap unreal games, its best to avoid them.

The hardest part of development in my opinion is optimization. Even if your game is done, it can take a huge effort and time investment to test it for most hardware and their drivers. That's why nowadays most games come out as a buggy mess like Rogue Trader for example, which gets buggier the deeper you are in-game, towards the end-game it becomes nearly unplayable and you need tools to get around certain bugs and it can be a hassle, I for example simply uninstalled and wait for a patch. The bigger the game, the longer it takes to run a test, also, buying all of the most probable platforms, testing it out, especially at full depth, so yeah... Not that I defend the studios that don't do proper testing, but considering how investors and publishers harass these game studios with time constraints, these things happen all the time nowadays. Games just became too big, too complex to thoroughly test and harder to fix too. On another note, artificial problems in games just exacerbate these things. And they won't prioritize fixes either because that does not generate an income in the short-term. Cyberpunk 2077 would argue with them but still, they rather make new content than to fix simple bugs that are years old. Most games nowadays have minimal to no mod support and modders can't fix everything. The time is coming when games with either be scaled back or the industry will suffer a crisis because most games end up crappy, unplayable messes and barely if anyone buys them.
