There was a great interview about 50 days into the war with one of the US/NATO pilots who trained and did exercises teaching the UA pilots. Now they are dying to get their hands on the UA pilots and start learning from them. They considered them the best and most experienced in the world at this point... they had been fighting, surviving, adapting and developing new tactics in an extremely complex and hostile air environment far beyond what any US/NATO pilot had ever experienced. They were even engaging when outnumber 12:1 and using the terrain, SAM and known MANPAD heavy areas to gain an adv...or force the RF to disengage.

Ooh this is a fun genre! The against the odds aspect really makes it thrilling viewing!! I don’t know what you’ve got modelled in DCS, but I think some of the following could be interesting: 1. Vintage Romanian Mig-21s that have been tricked out by the Israelis 2. Swedish Gripens or Viggens 3. Modernised Greek Mirage 2000s 4. Italian or British Panavia Tornado IDVs
@mwtrolle
@mwtrolle 2 жыл бұрын
1: Yes, they are interesting, especially as they have been modified to use NATO targeting pods and missiles. Guess the change to this platform is smaller then to western planes, and they might even be able to find mechanics that know the plane from for back in the days when they operated them in Ukraine. 2: Yes the Gripen's would be an even better plane for Ukraine, it's designed for the kind of war they are fighting, are easier to maintain, and are a lot more capable. But then again it's probably harder to get the Swedish government to accept the export of them to Ukraine, also there simply are not as many on storage as there are F-16's! Regarding the Viggen's, there is no point at all, as there are none stored away, besides maybe a few on museums, but you will need more than a few to make it be worthwhile. 3: Modernised Mirage, makes no sense from what i can see, there are a lot fewer then F-16's and they are mostly worse as well. 4: no need for them unless you got air superiority or you got capable AA fighters to defend them. Then again the F-16's or Gripens do the ground attack job well enough and with much less risk to themself.

Each of these new aircraft everyone is fantasizing about requires a logistics tail that is difficult enough to support in peace, but far more difficult during a war. It's not a sexy thing to discuss, but vital things like spare parts (especially engines), fully motion simulators, armament loaders, test equipment (all that stuff has limited TDMI intervals) are what produce mission capable aircraft for crews. So the more types of aircraft introduced, the more complex this gets.
@pastorjerrykliner3162
@pastorjerrykliner3162 2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the simple fact that pilots...even combat seasoned pilots...cannot just "jump into" an unfamiliar cockpit and take-off. One of the key arguments against the Poles shuttling off their MiG-29's is that, while they are the same "base model" aircraft, are different models than the Ukrainians were flying and outfitted with different avionics. Now take those differences and change the whole aircraft... Simple stuff like "How do I start the engines?" and "What does this button do?" I'm sure the HUD helps, but even the basic "Artificial Horizon" instruments are different from east to west: in the western instruments, the "plane" stays fixed and the horizon moves, in Russian equipment the "plane" moves and the horizon stays fixed. It's just not possible to put MiG pilots cold into an F16 cockpit and expect them to take off, fight, and land.

Weapon loaders will take days! Pilots will take a few weeks, or more depending on what level you wanna get them to. Maintainers are the major issue, they probably will take the longest to train, but if you have got them hooked up with video chat to some western experts in the area of expertise, I guess it might be done in a few weeks, but what then everything will go a lot slower.
@pogo1140
@pogo1140 2 жыл бұрын
Min 6 weeks if you are training experienced MiG-29 and Su-27 pilots, on a crash transition program using wartime regs, meaning there is a war on, there is no off base time, no parties, no down time. Remember you don't need to teach them how to fly, you're teaching them the systems of the new fighter and how to use them. lots of sim time between classroom work, lots of flight time, min 2x a day 6 days a week. Add 5 weeks for 50 sorties against the Fighter Weapons School. But like Mwtrolle said, the maintainers will take the longest. The logistics can be run by contractors with Ukrainians working alongside them as on the job training.

GR. Thanks for incorporating a few "suggestions" into this simulation. The hit and run tactics involved in this fight were much more realistic imo. Hit the easy marks (Gen 3/4) bombers and bug out when the airspace gets crowded with Gen 4++ fighters. 6:1 ratio is actually pretty good. The cost disparity between what was lost to what was shot down is huge. No country can sustain air operations losing that many airframes, pilots and sunken cost over a sustained period of time.

This is certainly a win, with the same reasoning as the last video. 2/6 losses is regrettable, but not unrecoverable, especially when you took down 12 very expensive and difficult to replace bombers. Consider that this would also be happening at other points on the front as well, it's a clear victory, though not a sustainable one. If I were to challenge anything about these missions thus far is that the bombers are essentially unescorted. Yes, there are QRF fighters in the area that take off as soon as your take off is detected, but that's a very different thing to knowing that the enemy has fighters in the area in unknown FARPs that can take off, do a bunch of damage, and land at a moment's notice. If I was the Russian General in charge of this, I would have the bombers escorted by at least one pair of fighters. That wouldn't make for a very good video though, so maybe have a CAP flying in the same area as the bombers waiting for those Ukranian fighters to pop up. More difficult, but also more realistic, but should still make for a pretty good video if you've only got 4 enemy CAP fighters to worry about and maybe another 8 150 miles away as a "QRF" that won't take off until your fighters are spotted by AWACS or the CAP is engaged. It would certainly make things more interesting.

"F86's victories vs Mig15s in Korean War were around 7:1" "Air Force planes of all types on air-to-air missions had an overall 3.8-1 kill ratio for the entire Vietnam war." I would say anything higher than 6:1 would be a good ratio. 12+:1 would have happened if Kortana was involved.
@KondorDCS
@KondorDCS 2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, F86s victory ratio over MiG15s were largely due to the MiGs being flown by inexperienced north korean pilots with junk tactics. Before that, WW2 experienced russian pilots flew the MiGs and they were pretty even with the Sabre pilots, who also brought their WW2 experience. This clearly shows that dogfighting is much more dependant on the quality of pilots then the planes themselves.

And the answer is: no, they would not be effective. People seem to forget that it is not 'just another airplane' you purchase for an Air Force. It's a weapons system. And even an earlier generation fighter as the F-16 was designed to be part of an overall Integrated Air Defense System, currently also equipped with more advanced C2 and tactical datalink capabilities as Link 16. So, equipping Ukraine with the F-16, vastly different in handling and deployment when compared to Soviet fighters as the MiG-29, would not only take several months to get the pilots combat-ready, the entire supply chain, maintenance facilities, Command & Control will need to be replaced. Nothing, literally nothing of the Soviet era technology, supporting processes or procedures would be able to support an F-16. So, no: this would not make a difference, it might even be impacting the combat effectiveness of the Ukraine Air Force in a negative way, since it would require significant resources to make this change and shift the focus from combat operations to the incorporation of a new jet into its arsenal. In nowadays, it's "You Fight As You Came'. There is no time to design, build and implement entire new airplanes.

Yeah, people seem to forget this isn't WWII where we can just come up with a better design and throw it into combat. However, let's pretend (for the purposes of an enjoyable Grim Reapers video) it's a situation sort of like the Vietnam war, where N. Vietnam pilots were training out of country with Russian pilots, in new Russian planes; afterward those Russian pilots were leading the North Vietnamese pupils into combat against the USAF and USN.

In the very immediate future, you are right, the infrastructure and training doesn't exist right now. That being said, NATO and similarly aligned countries are going to run out of former soviet equipment, Ukraine is planning ahead for that. Both the pilot training and infrastructure you are talking about is likely quietly being done. We are already seeing the gear being sent gradually shift. NATO designed Howitzers from the US and armored vehicles from Germany have already been sent. Fighter jet systems. as you say, are a lot more complex so the shift to get Ukraine using them will probably be a few months more at minimum.

Finland also use F/A-18's from roads, but Gripen C's would be better as they are designed for exactly this kind of war. Though there are advantages with F-16's, first and foremost there are simply so many in storage that would not matter much for the west to give away. I guess you could send the old F-18 hornet's instead, they also got reinforced landing gear and they even got the advantage of being smaller. The US got lot's in storage and they are practically worthless for the US. But I would say the F-16's are more capable than the old hornet's. If you should choose to send super hornet's, then I guess it could make sense if you planned to send growlers as well as support, as of the similarities between those to planes. But don't think the US would risk a growler, even a crashed one falling into Russia's hands.

F-16A does roll PIO a bit on landing. The YF-16 Flight 0 Taxi test incident was similar. I've also heard of a few F-16As including MLU birds doing the same thing. These birds as I recall still use analog FCS. At least one incident occurred during a section landing with the wingman having PIO issues. F-16C Block 52 jets have Digital FCS and a higher wing loading, so less likely to roll PIO on landing.

I'd advise that you start out with an aircraft that you love and start, then use the 2 week trial to try out other planes to see if you want to purchase them. If you find one, wait for a sale and purchase it at that time. Welcome to an addicting hobby that can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.

I'll save you some time. Yes, F-16s would be effective and I think you could train an experienced pilot to employ it in a few weeks. They wouldn't necessarily be "good" but they would get there pretty quick. If you had to pick between an older block F-16 and an older block FA-18 (like an old Canadian or Aussie) I would go with the FA-18. The radar is better, the A/G systems are better. I've flown both. I flew an F-16 on an exchange flight with only about an hour in the sim and a couple hours of briefing (IP in the back seat of course). I wasn't that hard. Was I good and able to employ the aircraft effectively? Heck no, but I could start it up and take off and land and figured out the basics of operating the RADAR. I think with a crash course you could train up experienced MIG-29 pilots in 3-4 weeks.

On the question: "Would the US send F-22s to a conflict like Ukraine?" - They flew F-22s around Syria for very little reason/effect. They were probably doing something we don't know about, but the point is that the Syrian conflict certainly didn't need the air superiority offered by the F-22, or likely even any type of A-G strike that couldn't be accomplished with other platforms.

Great mission :) I would say it was a success. With losses like that from a single mission Russia would have to change their way of doing air strikes and that would let off the pressure on Ukrainian forces for the short term and likely result would be an order to have escort for strike missions and thereby limiting number of missions, flexibility and increasing logistical cost.

USAF had the F22 flying its first combat missions over Syria. If the Air Force was willing to risk flying F22 over Syrian skies, I'm betting they'd risk them over Ukraine then. That environment is what the Raptor was designed for. Dominate the skies over a pier/near pier's air force. As for the Felon. Last I heard they have 10 test/protype planes for testing and 5 "Active" planes. I'd doubt they'd use them. Unless for some kind of sneaky mission....which would fail.

Just a note, awacs support is all along the borders over poland too etc. Not just over the black sea. During local daytime they also tend to all have their transponders shouting to let Russia know we're there, watching and thus visible on sites like flightradar. Tankers blaring transponders too. Normally our awacs don't have the transponders running. (I live next to the main base for them, I'll see them IRL and they won't be on flightradar, they are purposely having their transponders shout during daytime, this publicly being there started shortly after the invasion began.) Also noted in an earlier video you didn't have an awacs above the north sea when you simulated ballistic missile attack on the UK, should have been there as it is there every day IRL. Would have skewed your sim with some earlier detection. Ukraine is getting all the support manageable tbh. On paper we're not (yet) but in reality NATO is full in and has been for a while. Intel is massively shared with Ukraine and probably running ops too. Whatever we can get away with without triggering Russia to go stupid and ballistic on us. Ukraine was warned by NATO intel Russia would invade to begin with. I doubt F16's would help much, IRL you can't just hop into a plane you don't know and have at it. It's not a car lol. You need time to study the manual, get familiar with specs of the plane (even just the basics, ideal landing speeds, stall speeds, take/of landing configs etc. none of these are universal across planes) before they are useful at all. UA pilots aren't familiar with F16's. Su's and Mig 29's some of our eastern members have sitting around would be a better vehicle to send to ukrainian pilots I think.

A military conversion from say a 29 to a 16 would probably be about 6 months and that would be pretty intensive, you have a lot to learn and practice to form subconscious processes and muscle memory etc (remember, ''you don't have time to thing'' lol). Supplied by half a dozen nations) Mistral (~100 sent from Norway) Starstreak (Sizeable amount sent by the UK) Martlet (UK keeps denying it but there is footage of it in use) For Guns: AZP S-60 (Limited number was kept in storage) ZU-23-2 (no explanation needed) ZSU-23-4 Shilka (quite a few and many have been upgraded significantly) Flakmanzer Gepard (not there yet as far as i know but still useful for sure, sent by Germany) Overall Ukraine still operates a sizeable fleet of rather capable air defenses and the known losses only represent a fraction of their inventory. Ukraine still contests the skies Sources: Janes Photographic evidence official releases Sipri armstrade resource

What I suggested was to operate in or at least from areas where the US AWACS could give a good/decent battle picture.

But aren't the bomber incursions that need to be attacked on the Eastern front?
@mwtrolle

@@grimreapers There are incoming logistics coming from Crimea, and along the coast. Also, shooting down Russian planes and sinking boats and ships in the black sea vill hurt the Russian morale, limit their choices and free up units from the coastline that can then be sent to help in the fighting in and around Donbas. There it would make sense to use them more in an offensive role. About the bomber incursion, right now it's mainly along and close to the front line. But there have been attacks much further into the country, though it seems like they mainly use missiles now. Guess the F-16s could be used to hunt down some of the cruise missiles as well. I don't think the F-16s would be used to go all-in against the bombers in the frontline area, they would be used really carefully, picking out a few targets at a time, when they got some decent intel on what is in the area and where. The Ukrainians don't need to shoot down all the bombers that attack, they need to shoot some down, and in that way grind down the Russian airforce, or limit their operation in the area.

@@grimreapers Maybe make a video where video or videos to test what fighter could help most. F-16(Some suggested F-15, but I guess it would be limited by its size and requirements and having to be operated from roads), Mirage 2000, Hornets, Super Hornets and Gripen C's( personally I feel the Gripen C's would be the best for the role(especially as they are capable of using the Meteor missiles).

@@grimreapers Are there any good representation for the Upgraded Romanian MiG-21's in the game? As I understand they have got better avionics, and use NATO targeting pods, NATO guided bombs and some NATO missiles as well. Could they help the Ukrainians by supporting the MiG-29's from the back in the air to air fighting? How good would they be for ground support? As I see it, they are damn old, but they are not completely hopeless. Used in the right role they might be able to make a difference if no western planes can be sent. Their main advantage is that they Use NATO bombs and missiles, so we have got an almost unlimited supply of them. While it might not be the best or newest NATO missiles it can USE, they are probably a lot better than what Ukraine operates now. The precision-guided ordinance surely is better,, and as I said they can get a lot of it fast and indefinitely.

Without having enough knowledge about how the fighter jets detect each other and what factors determine who can aim and shoot whom first, I find such videos very hard to understand. (Not knowing many terminologies is another reason for confusion). I hope you could at least post a brief summary about the battle and the result.

Maybe it’s just me but I prefer that GR upload more actual content than that they try to explain the basics after each upload and end up making fewer of the actual videos. I’m sure there are plenty of existing videos and pages that lay down the basics.

We would send the stealths but they put the little rcs panel things on them that change what the actual rcs of the plane looks like. Can't remember what they're called, they use them when they do air superiority missions in the U. S.

How much difference would it make if you increased the self-defense armament of the Su-34 to include R-77 missiles and perhaps order them to attack your FARB rather than random spots on the map?

In these simulations, the Russian side is completely overestimated. As if they actually had the latest guided missiles presented at some military fair in large numbers in their arsenal. Or that the Air Force would mainly use SU-35s, but in fact they are primarily SU-30s and only a few SU-35s. In reality, even modern SU-34s attack primarily with ancient dumb bombs, and pilot proficiency is similar to that of ground forces and the Navy. It would be advisable to read an interview with a Ukrainian pilot (coffeeordie). If the basic conditions of a simulation in terms of equipment and training deviate so much from reality, the result unfortunately has no meaningfulness.
