I could see this being a tipping point for Starline. Just when he thinks his work has finally paid off, it ends in failure. I could see him being the one to make the Metal Virus himself in this timeline, and with how careful he is, compared to how reckless Eggman was in the comics, he could make his Virus perfect. Unshackled from being uncontrollable like in the comics. He would be even more of a threat than Eggman, and might eventually fall into megalomaniacal insanity, and commit actual murder.

That would at least not be lame, it would use a flaky premise of Eggman to drive a better plot through Starline. This here is a very good production, but it just throws out every reason Eggman might have to be Eggman and reduces it to "he was evil for evil's sake", just to make him "good for good's sake", in an equally flat way. What, "people appreciate what I do"? How does that spell him remembering ANYTHING about being Eggman, except there was nothing to remember? Oh yeah, and "I have a life I actually like", so Eggman all this time is SIMPLY hiding some self-hate or some other convenient psychobabble handwave? These kinds of explanations, like "boys pull your hair because they like you", and "people are being mean because they're just hurt inside." That's just the usual, constant parade of flimsy excuses, that exist to be widely applicable without having to consider any details, or make INTERESTING STORIES about the details. You could swap them randomly. Starline for example is being mean BECAUSE he likes Eggman, and some other character might pull a girls hair just to spread his own misery. These explanations are not RELIANT on the symptoms, they're just allegations that people want to believe in to make their world seem black-and-white. And it doesn't even make a person good, just tribalistic in favor of only few ACCEPTABLE personalities. Not unlike the tribalistic American sentiment today. Interesting stories come from the grey areas, like how do you handle Eggman, how does Belle handle Eggman, when there IS a reason he is Eggman, and he LIKES it? And everything in Eggmans characterization DOES stink of him loving to be who he is. He IS an egomaniac, to the core of his PERSONALITY. You can't just write that off as him "remembering" other ways to be, and now his temperament is completely upturned. Mr.Tinker worked better because it WAS an exception to everything Eggman loves, or KNOWS, since he DID forget being Eggman. It's like the HAZE of not knowing what Eggman knows MAKES you good, so what does that make Eggman? Correct, instead of GOOD? There CAN be a good Eggman by all means, but that requires what actually good people do: some work to find the good potential IN the character he already has. Without Eggman's character, I wouldn't even REALIZE Belle's character, and the excellent story depicting having a bad father, in a child-friendly context. I think that's better, than having feel-good stories for adults or children.

@@sboinkthelegday3892 Or... for a more compelling story, Eggman's brain has been scarred physically in a way no amount of reasoning or emotions can really fix, where he can remember, but something in his head broke and his behavior went for an U-turn and ONLY after healing (from the use of the Chaos Emeralds as the miracle gems these are), he'd go back to his true self, his original self (not healing may sound like an opinion, but this negligence can ultimately can cost Mr. Tinker's life anyway, because brain damage be like that... also, if the Emeralds are used to cure him from the Metal Virus, it _could_ happen without anyone knowing and everything would proceed normally after the Metal Virus)

Eggman as a protector would be unstoppable Think about it: he wouldn't have to steal resources, they'd be given to him, his robots and defenses would be higher quality since he'd have support from people like sonic instead having to frantically mass produce lower quality stuff just to his enemies at bay while he works on something else, he knows how to make the most out of power sources and resources they find, and to top it off he'd find ways to assist his allies like Knuckles, Tails or Sonic by giving them tech and upgrades to power them up further.

Imagine this. Eggman (Sticking with his rechristened name, Mr Tinker) has walked out of the building that Starline was keeping him in. And Starline finally cracks. All of his hard work, his dedication, his want for attention from the Big Egg himself. Gone. And with it, the insanity grows in him, and he finally decides this Starline: “TO HELL WITH IT! If I can’t bring Dr Eggman back to his senses and rule this planet at his side, then by Mobius, I’LL DO IT MYSELF!” Starline captures Metal Sonic, and manages to reprogram him, executing a contingency command that tells Metal that “Eggman is dead, I have been given control of the Empire as his final command”, thus causing Metal to assume Starline as his new leader by default. Mr Tinker meets Sonic alone on a hill and tells him what happened and repeats what he said to Starline in this video. That he is ditching his dictator life and sticking to living in Windmill Village as Mr Tinker. After so many long years, he finally makes peace with his arch nemesis. Sonic is thrilled that Eggman decided to ditch his evil ways even when he got his memories back. Shadow is skeptical, but after a month or so, he finally decided to dumb down his vendetta with the Egg and ally with him for good. But Starline returns, either unleashing the Metal Virus, this iteration more perfected, or creating Surge and Kitsunami to counter Sonic and Tails. The former Eggman Empire has transformed into the Federation of Starline. A new era begins. Starline is the new Big Bad, Eggman is now a hero, and the fate of the planet hangs in the balance of two rivals turned allies, Sonic and Mr Tinker. And scene! 👏

Two ideas that came to mind… 1. Instead of Metal being reprogrammed (not sure that’s possible), maybe he has his equivalent of a whatever motivated him to become the villain of Sonic Heroes. We know in the games that Metal Sonic is an ever-evolving, ever-improving enemy, that has an insane copy ability. But the most terrifying thing that Metal Sonic has copied over the years, were other people’s personalities. If Metal came to the realization that “if I’m so powerful, why do I have to work for Eggman?”… That could seriously become a problem. It could be an “JLU Amazo” scenario, where Metal initially sided with Starline, and goes on to copy the abilities of all of the main heroes… It’s when Starline tries to boss him around that the trouble REALLY starts. 2. A story like this could actually give Belle more of a front seat in the story. Since her “Dad” is there, she might not feel as bottled-up around others. I imagine when she’s around Mr. Tinker, it brings out the best in her. Heck, in this AU, maybe she actually considers learning how to fight? I imagine Tinker would be hesitant, cause he’s not an evil inventor anymore… But after some prodding, he does design some non-lethal combat upgrades for Belle, so she can protect herself. Heck, maybe she’s the one who finally goes toe to toe with Hyper Metal Sonic?… Ehhh, scratch that, Sonic’s likely the one to finally bring down Metal.

The tiredness and tone of somber dejection in Eggman's voice. You can practically feel the weight of his shoulders as his heart is slowly cracking and shatters upon realizing the truth of the man that he used to be. In a way cementing that behind all of convoluted schemes and blusterous persona of a mad scientist lies the lonely soul of middle aged man whom (while he might not wish to admit it to anyone) would probably gladly give up his genius level intellect if it meant that he could have more people in his life God speed to you Mr. Tinker. May we dream of a world where Eggman Land is but a playground that brings the laughter of children. This along with Eggman's actual moment of hesitation in Sonic IDW issue #23 is both really wholesome and utterly heartbreaking at the same time.

I like this Eggman, he changed with his OWN will. And not with any help from hypnotism bullcrap. He knew what he did, and just settled to not going any further. Without anyone pushing him to the decision to do so. Eggman saw Mr. Tinker as himself, but not a better version of such. They're both magnificent in their own ways, and both have resolves. Both as equals. It's like the Yin and Yang. Except the Yin side of it decides to let that small dot of light grow and be nurtured by it's past mistakes and faults. In a way, once the rotten fruit falls to the ground, it becomes nutrients for the tree, additionally giving life to the seeds inside, helping it become brand new sapplings. That alone makes this comic memorable. For me at least.

This actually makes sense. Eggman would've seen life from two very different perspectives, and if he had given it more thought in the comics, he would've realized that his life as Dr. Eggman was a hollow and empty one. Having people in your life that actually care about you and want nothing more than happiness for you is something Eggman never had, and probably never would've had had he not lost his memory. And he probably never will again. 'Eggman' is forever fated to live a life devoid of human emotion and interaction, while 'Tinker' is has earned himself the privilege of living life with content. 'Eggman' is a dull and pointless existence, with nothing but the ambition of global conquest to keep him going. 'Tinker' has friends and a family who care very deeply for him. I'm certain I know which of the two is more likely to be depressed.

I honestly think one of the reasons the Mr. Tinker persona vanished so quickly is because he hadn't had any truly memorable experiences as Mr. Tinker to really cling to. Everything Mr. Tinker did was just Eggman bleeding through into the more friendly persona, even the creation of Belle in a way. One idea I keep running through my head... what if, instead of just leaving him ignorant in the village, they had decided to educate Mr. Tinker, and tell him the truth about what he'd done, and what he'd done? None of the aggressive hypno/shock therapy shit to try and bring his memory back, just _teach Mr. Tinker about his past._ Let Mr. Tinker form his own opinions about the horrors he's unleashed on the world. Let Mr. Tinker develop his own feelings about it. Add some mental and emotional strength to the Mr. Tinker persona so that when the Eggman memories come flooding back, there is something there to resist going back to the old Ego and Megalomania. The meek humbleness gave way immediately, but what if all that pride had been met with the horror and revulsion of already having been told about what he'd done? Instead of just going "oh yes, that's what I was doing, BACK TO IT", it would be his old memories stacking onto the _new_ memories and experiences and feeling about his old deeds, and his old ways. Mr Tinker was meek, and afraid. But after being told about his old self, he's terrified and horrified and disgusted by what he used to be. When the memories come back, he realizes firsthand what he used to be like... but he's a new man now, and can choose to be better than he was. And now that he has his old memories back, he understands his old ways better than ever... and has the courage and confidence of knowing _exactly_ what he's capable of, to potentially even lend his assistance to permanently undoing the remnants of danger presented by his old assets, Mr Tinker becoming arguably the Restoration's greatest asset in cleansing the world of what remains of the Eggman Empire. I can dream.

This would actually be pretty fun comic idea. Like, a spin-off non cannon comic series where almost anything goes, could have dr. eggman finally settling down at least for a while, he would appear now and then during the course of the series, maybe helping on the sidelines. Could also have a storyline of him building a small amusement park and naming it "Tinkerer Land" (as reference to Eggman Land) while in the same comic intertwining with past Eggman going about his business. At the end of the comic the last two pannels are one of Eggman sitting on a throne covered in shadows in a colossal room alone and the other is Mr. Tinker taking a "family" photo with the people of the village. Just throwing ideas around cus I find this idea to be a fun "what if" scenario.

In all honesty, this is the route I thought the IDW comics were gonna go once Eggman appeared as Mr. Tinker. It would've been so much more interesting to see Sonic and Friends dealing with the new delima of their oldest and greatest rival now wanting to be someone who actually HELPS people rather than hurting them. And for that matter, who's to say Starline would just take this lying down? He could steal a sample of Eggman's moustache hair and combined with the eventual sample of Tails's fur he gets could decide, "You know what? I'm DONE with Eggman. If he won't return to the helm of Emporer of the Eggman Empire, then I'll just make my own!"

This would have been a better branch I think. There's more new ground to tread. I mean you could have Eggman return to old form at some point, but having him try for something different, to achieve something that actually brings himself and others joy. It would have been a greater arc. Create new villains, new characters, new dynamics, before then bringing eggman back in with the same goal but perhaps a different perspective and motivation.

Why, those other Villains could be his motivations for world domination at that point. A 'Peace by the Sword' concept, where in one of these villains destroyed the village he worked so hard to protect, causing him to come to a conclusion that the people need a protector beyond sonic.

Honestly I would’ve loved to see dr. My first time reading through the metal virus arch I almost expected eggman to stay mr. tinker until the very end where starline would have created the virus himself, and him being as precautious as he is would create it to be unstoppable. He would even consider the chaos emeralds and find a way to counter their power, and so the resistance would be forced to turn mr tinker back into eggman just so he could help them stop the virus. It'd be great irony for sonic and everyone else to genuinely come to eggman and basically ask him to be himself again, the one thing they didn't want to happen at the start of the comic

I had mixed feelings about this, I wanted for Eggman, on one hand, we get to see the character retire and we'd see an end to his story to make room for other villains to take his place. On the other hand, we would never see him again, Eggman's villainy is a bit tired out at this point, but he's still such a great character that has a hero-villain dynamic with Sonic that's been developed for over thirty years. I dunno (im not talking about the games just about the comics, Eggman better always be in the games.)

I’d like to think that his reasoning for staying as Mister Tinker is more than just him liking the new version of himself. I think it is also mixed with a sense of mental and potential physical exhaustion. He must’ve been fighting Sonic for years on end. Combined with the fact that he has lost again, and again, and again. I’d like to think that him being Mister Tinker symbolizes him finally winning something. The hearts of children, the village, his robot daughter, and potentially more to follow. A more healthy way to fuel his ego without world domination.

First, woah, this looks just like the comic! Second, I think this is a more realistic reaction than what was actually put in print. The Tinker memories shouldn’t have been removed when Eggman got his memories back, so I feel like the warmth of his memories as Mr. Tinker, being accepted and loved, contrasting with the years of loneliness and failure, would make Eggman at least think twice about going back to his old life. The comic depicted it like Eggman just came back and didn’t care about what his alternate personality did, but more logically the rush of memories would just build on the existing Mr. Tinker personality, who would prefer a simple life at the village over a lonely one building cold lifeless machines for world domination.

I like what the creator did with Mr Tinker and Dr Starline in this 'What If' comic short. It’s a bittersweet masterpiece; bitter on Starline’s end due to him struggling to understand that the man he admired may never come back (for a long time or at all), and sweet on Mr Tinker’s end because he knows how much pain and suffering his past self has caused people and thus genuinely wants to change his ways. Which - from my point of view - disturbingly makes Sonic in the right and Shadow and Espio in the wrong. I say ‘disturbingly’ because of the comparison Sonic made between Shadow and Eggman at one point. He seemed to have forgotten the real reason Eggman does good things and Shadow had done terrible things. Eggman had willingly committed a large number of crimes against the world - and possibly more - and never once sought to change his ways for the better before losing his memories, only becoming good because of losing his memories. Shadow, on the other hand, was not himself when he once tried to destroy Sonic and the world at large, only to eventually see the error in his ways and use his second chance - the only chance he was given - to atone for his transgressions before losing his memories. (I hope Sonic apologises to Shadow when they discuss this.) But overall, this comic short is fantastic.

On one side, it would never had happened in IDW. In there, they play Eggman as evil because he is so intelligent he think he’s fixing all problems in the world and sees everyone else as too stupid to be trusted unless under him. Mr. Thinker was him dumbed down just enough to not see things as “my way or no way” and actually fix problems. Still, it would be such a great AU to see Starline taking over while Mr.Thinker would be friendly, or even become an ally to Sonic. It could even evolve in Starline being so cruel and evil without his idol complex ( let’s be real, not far from canon ) that Mr.Thinker would feel the need to call back Eggman to stop him, even if he’s afraid he might become evil again once those thougs come back to him.

I always love the notion that this was Eggman's out to being a villain for the rest of his life. Being Mr Tinker gave him the perspective that he needed to realize he'd wasted so much of his life trying to defeat Sonic and take over the world that he never actually did anything significant. This was the moment where he fully realized he was an old man that just wanted to retire, be surrounded by friends and family, and just be happy living a quiet life. It was a moment where he could've told Starline the truth; that he was a failure. That Dr Eggman was just a persona, and that nobody remembered the man who set out so many years ago to make a difference in the world, only the cartoon villain obsessed with fighting a neverending game of cat and mouse with Sonic. Even if he wanted to go back to that life, he knew he wasn't cut out for it anymore. But Starline? He might be a worthy successor to the legacy of Dr Eggman. Perhaps he'd see the pattern that Eggman had been trapped in for so long and be better for it, or he'd fall into the same routine himself and eventually find someone else to pasd the torch along to. Either way, someone needs to make sure Sonic and his friends don't get lazy.
