Thanks for the awesome video, NetworkChuck :) If I may ask one question. At 12:55 the concept of exiting the code with exit(). As a someone who comes from the murky waters of Autolisp, using the exit function there used to force an error to terminate the execution of the code, which is a very crude way to go about it. I was wondering, if it is the same case for Python. Meaning, when we use exit(), do we force an error, that forces the console to brake further execution of the code, or do we just end it there naturally? Sorry if my question is silly :)
@swallowedinthesea112 жыл бұрын
You get a popup saying you killed program. The exit function is not used in production because of that nasty display. You really could just write the coffee code by including everything from line 22 into line 17's body.
@zyfryth2 жыл бұрын
@@swallowedinthesea11 Yes, from my humble programming experience, you can almost always include ways to exit the program, without having to kill it inside the code.

that's cool. at the end you wrote exit() to exit the program. Is there a command 'end' like in some other languages? I just don't like that red string and prefer that the program is kinda done.
@swallowedinthesea113 жыл бұрын
I have never used exit in seven years. I didn't even know it existed until I saw this, but you don't need to use it in this case because you could just simply, from the Challenge Lab section, paste the question of what do you want to order right inside the body of the Else after line 18. If you're not Ben, the If will run and immediately exit. Otherwise, the Else will greet you and ask you for your order.
@swallowedinthesea113 жыл бұрын
Oops, I meant if you are Ben, the If will run...
@awanturnik9783 жыл бұрын
@@swallowedinthesea11 oh okay so it require a man to put whole code under else statement, do I understand it correctly? What is your expirience with readability of the code when we do that on the bigger scale?
@swallowedinthesea113 жыл бұрын
@@awanturnik978 At 12:12, Chuck said that we could nest everything within the Else. He chose not to because 'it would look messy.' Let me first say that one of the greatest things about the language is that there are multiple ways to solve something. That being said, I think he just wanted to make everything less confusing to beginners by not nesting a lot of lines into the Else. But to be honest, a single line for the Else and leaving it at that is a bit lazy; we should take advantage of the Else by using it as intended. Both ways work, but the exit function has the dirty red text, and from a quick research it said that that function shouldn't be used in production code. As for readability, you as the programmer will have to decide on how you write and organize. The more you experiment and practice, the more close you will get to discovering your style. I personally try to limit nesting to two or three as I find the more I keep nesting within nests and deeper nests, I get confused and my eyes hurt.

Can you make it to where the if statement detects whether or not the string has a certain letter at the start? Like if the name variable equals and word that starts with B it will print a message.
@swallowedinthesea113 жыл бұрын
You will have to know the basics of indexing first: x = 'Negan' x[0] is 'N' x[1] is 'e' So on until you get to x[4] which is 'n' Keep in mind when getting each value in an index, you always start counting at zero. Now let's write an IF and use the above as an example: name = input('Who is the most beautiful in the world? ') if name[0] == 'B' or name[0] == 'b': # line 2 print('OMG! I love', name.title(), 'too!') At line 2, name[0] means if the first index of the variable name is 'B' or 'b' (I included 'b' because not everyone will capitalize the first letter of a name) then run line 3. At line 3, name.title() just means to capitalize the first letter of each word in the variable name. There is another way to write the above. It's a bit more advanced, but if you want to know more look up what string methods are: name = input('Who is the most beautiful in the world? ').lower().strip() if name[0] == 'b': print('OMG! I love', name.title(), 'too!')
