When the Fighter was subclassed into Bard, the first thing that came to mind was a Battle Master Fighter Bard who would walk onto the battlefield out of a fog singing to pre-buff his allies as they follow in a formation one by one out of the fog. Then command moves, buffs, and debuffs are sung all around the battlefield.

That... is a concept I might have to try out as soon as I get more confident in my roleplaying. Right now I'm that one guy who talks the least which is not what you would want in a bard. And even though I am playing a fighter, for some reason my character's above average stats make him the group's diplomat just by using common sense.

Once ran a game where the players all did that, but with Rogue, to get Evasion at 2nd Level, then multiclassed into Fighter, Cleric, Wizard and "Fighter" (for two levels, then went back to Rogue. They turned themselves into this wicked Special Forces squad. They weren't OP, but dang it was hard finding challenges for them.

you can multiclass anytime around 5th to 6th lvl. (you wanna try and have one subclass, if not two.) my favorite was the battlemaster, gloomstalker i made. if at 9th lvl add assassin subclass from rogue and you can nuke any single target out of existence. Go! Battle stalker assassin!

@@jessesalas1286 Take 4 levels in Echo Knight for the Feat/ASI option. 3 levels in each Class of your choice with the final lv20 Point in a new lv1 Class or to bump up an old class by 1 level. If you're okay with a Full Feat Character, then Multiclassing shouldn't be a concern.

We were inside a Force Cage arena, and he was both Hasted and had doubled HP. The DM fully expected me to die. CR8 vs Lv8 with a Potion of Haste. _I wasn’t even bloodied._

I actually played a ranger using Ranger: Revised from Unearthed Arcana, they're actually really good! I was competing with the rogue for dps at lvl 4 (heavy crossbow + hunters mark + colossus slayer is 1d10+1d6+1d8 damage). Would love to see the ranger character actually get finished because of the new rules.

Good point. How fun a character is depends on how fun the player makes them. Though I've often seen that the players tend to match the personality of their stereotypes. (i.e. the guy who played the paladin was also the rules' lawyer, and the guy who chose fighter was also kinda basic in his playstyle and character creation...)

Sure the character itself can be fun, but that doesn't mean that the combat rotation and utility out of combat isn't a bit boring/basic. I love playing fighters, they're probably my most played class next to blood hunters, because I love seeing consistently high damage, but even though I love the characters I make with them, mechanically it does get a bit boring when 90% of your turns in combat are you rolling the same attacks over and over again. Maybe that's just a me thing though, in all fairness I've never really played the Battle Master besides one time because while I understand that they are a good class and they have versatility I hate that the manuevers are literally all they can do. Plus I don't really find the concept of the subclass all that enjoyable over something like the rune knight that harnesses the power of giants of the echo knight that literally makes a copy of itself

I've always been the DM for over 2 decades now and we always play 3rd edition in my games so the game where I'm the player now is 5e and I'm a battlemaster fighter is both completely new. That said I don't get the complaints. It's all a matter of how you play your character. I took battlemaster specifically to lead the party because we have 2 followers (new players) one newer player, and one who's less of a leader type character. My manuevers are rally because there is no cleric, precision for important hits, and commander's strike. It's all about getting the character to match what you want to do

I never multiclassed my fighters either. All to get that sweet QUADRUPLE ATTACK!!! Nothing like bashing a golem FOUR TIMES per turn with a silvered adamantine maul. Is it broken? Not so much, but it is reliable. Which is what I love about fighters. That, and they get most of their abilities back with a short rest.

I think my favorite character I’m playing is actually my fighter. They are intended to be majority fighter throughout the time I’ll play them. The reason I say majority is that I plan to take two levels of tempest cleric for the reaction and channel divinity stuff and this is mostly to further the story connections of my character, who’s backstory already implies a mysterious tie to the storm god of the world (they also have a magic lightning sword too). But yeah, this is more to add additional flavor to the roleplaying. The majority is still very focused on fighter because the party needs the tank part. Oh! And I made my fighter a linguistics scholar which is another thing the party relies on my character for. Helps that I am also built to be a decent face to the party (they really really needed it when I joined, along with a wider spread of languages). I quite like my role. I am built more to be well rounded than being the main frontliner (the party monk is actually our combat focused person, though my job is to help with that). Of course, I think the main reason this build works, beyond some good heroic stats, is that this campaign I play this character for, is a very roleplaying/storytelling one with a ton of intrigue. We are also a mostly intelligence focused party build with various areas of “studies” that each character focuses on and contributes to the group (inventions, arcana, history, languages, anthropology, nature, religion, etc). This means we have a rather well rounded group. Of course, we have our super genius, high int, focused party members, but most of us have a 14 or above in the int stat. My character, the ranger, and the cleric are far more focused on wisdom though which benefits a lot since we use our skills for insight and so on. The benefit for me is that my subclass lets me use my wisdom modifier over in my chosen charisma skills and I kept a decent amount of charisma base stat to use that with. This is how I am one of the smart ones, the party face, and the muscle. I find fighter is actually pretty good for this type of thing and it has me pretty happy. Still, it is a someone what intense campaign. While combat isn’t the priority, it certainly is made to be challenging. One of the main reasons why, when I joined, I became another frontliner with a build to does a ton of damage. Not paladin level, sure, but the player I was replacing was a paladin and it felt redundant and I didn’t have a subclass I was interested in for paladin that I felt inspired to use. I enjoy the fighter class I chose. Allowed me the flexibility I wanted. Oh! And there is more chances, especially earlier in the levels, to take feats without sacrificing too many ASI. Keep that in mind for fighter. Well worth having.

It's weird that there were no ranger levels, as Fighter is one of the only classes that synergizes well with Ranger. Double fighting styles can be a powerful advantage since nothing says you can only use one at a time. If you're going Eldritch Knight then the ranger spells are a nice compliment to your arsenal, if you're going Psiwarrior or Rune Knight then Fey Wanderer or Swarmkeeper really help you spread your damage around, or Echo Knight fighter and Hunter ranger with a focus on the mob-fighting abilities. Grab a halberd and threaten everything.
