You're mostly correct in livestock unless you're talking about pork. Intact boars are prone to what is known as boar taint which shows up in the mature boar carcass. Prepubescent boars are fine, but the mature boar has very little value selling for as low as .03 a lb at the salebarns and the meat winds up in highly spiced meat like pepperoni. Only a small handful of plants process mature boars.

Hormones are so important. I used to take a testosterone blocker to help with PCOS symptoms. My doctor told me I had to make absolutely sure I didn't get pregnant on it because it would make a male fetus develop incorrectly. It would be medical malpractice to allow the medication to be taken during pregnancy. I've been off the medication for years, which is good because so far I've only ended up pregnant with boys 😅.

In the medieval medical text, The Trotula, it was stated that the city of Salerno was a place for clean, well healing castrations. Salerno was an enclave of European, Middle eastern and African physicians. This created a beneficial exchange of information that built upon many more medical treatises than Galen. While Trota of Salerno was a female physician and the texts deal mainly with women's medicine, it has some interesting insights on men and male diagnoses, because women would often ask question (even in the 12th Century) of a doctor that their husbands/fathers/brothers/male friends would not.

Yes isn't it something like 95% of carbon is produced by 10 companies. In any case these massive corporations will not do anything to reduce their carbon footprint unless legally obligated. And that will only come via lawsuits brought on by very well-funded campaigns, that can afford very good lawyers. As those megacorps have a team of very good lawyers that work just for them. And many repeated cases brought against them, as no doubt they will push back heavily, at least to begin with. But since the fact of the matter here is that they are, objectively speaking, in the wrong, and the truth is that they pollute far more than any person or even country of people ever could; with enough pressure and cohesive action from passionate groups determined to do what can still be done to rectify the climate catastrophe, as let's face it our governments just aren't going to do enough, if anything at all, even if they claim to; there's a chance we may be able to act in time to force their hand. Much like the DuPont scandal and how the local population of Flint had to come together to stop the rampant pollution of the giant company that was giving them cancer, knowingly, lying about it for years, and had to be forced in a court of law to not only admit it but offer any form of compensation to the victims. These are evil entities we're talking about here and they have to be made to do what is right, there is nothing other than legal action and legally binding court verdicts with consequences that will actually affect them that will get them to do that. Conscientiousness/ morality/ having a conscience just doesn't apply here; as we saw with DuPont they would rather kill dozens, if not hundreds, if not an unlimited number of people just to avoid the truth getting out.

This is because testosterone is actually bad for your heart. There’s a reason the males have drastic rates of cardiovascular diseases, and it’s the leading cause of death in men. Notoriously bad for your heart and good for your breasts. Even though it’s called an androgen and thought of as a masculine Hormone, testosterone is actually present in males, females and intersex individuals, just in different ammounts and combinations. Fascinatingly, testosterone is the hormone that kickstarts female puberty . Thats why cis men who abuse steroids sometimes grow their own beast tissue. DHT is what kicksatrts male puberty. After menopause, females are actually only left with testosterone in their system, as once the ovaries are empty the body doesn’t have a good source of creating it’s own estrogen or progesterone anymore. That’s why so many older women have such a beautiful jaw lines and cheekbones ; Strong necessarily creates definition in the bones of the face. This can actually make sexing the skeleton of an idividual difficult if all you have is the skull. After the age of 60 or so, its hard to tell if the skull you are examining came from a masculinized female face or a gracile male one. Testosterone is also what makes men go bald btw.

But the way the bones grow is not quite the same proportions as when sex hormones are present at usual levels. This means in animals neutered young, there are ergonomic differences in the way joints are strained under use, and dome injuries are more common. Muscle development is much less with less testerone. Being more heavily muscled leads to larger bone attachments and thicker stronger bones. These changes may not make much difference for a pet. If a dog competes in dog sports, the amount and type of exercise they should get training means they are athletes, and like any athlete more susceptible to being injured while competing. For this reason, people who compete in dog sports like agility and flyball do not want to deserve puppies before puberty, ideally not until after growth has finished.

Dogs, cats, and horses as well. If they are neutered (castrated or spayed) before they are done growing (12 to 24 months for dogs, 2 - 4 years for horses), the growth plates close later, resulting in a tall, narrow, lanky appearance. Bones have receptors for sex hormones, so their lack affects the bones weakening them. Dogs are confirmed to be at higher risk of bone cancers if they are neutered. In breeds prone to bone cancer like the Rottweiler, this can be pretty significant. They are at higher risk of anterior cruciate ligament tears. There are a lot of negative health effects. There is a very comprehensive list of the various study findings online. They've also found in dogs that castration often increase fear biting.

Was just about to say. The real reason pets are spayed and neutered is to avoid producing more strays, not because it’s good for them. More recent research suggests that waiting a bit longer to get your dog or cat spayed or neutered mitigates these health risks. How long that is depends on breed and size.
@kiaradoesart9682 Жыл бұрын
@@loosehandle1 The research for cats (much less studied than dogs btw) is now suggesting the opposite- castrating early is perfectly fine for them and reduces their risk for a bunch of cancers as well, particularly females. A urinary infection/blockage doesn't have anything to do with their hormones, it has to do with cats being fed dry food when they don't have a strong instinct to drink enough water (their wild cousins get most of the moisture they need from their food).

So, the castration of boys started because women were seen as "unfit" to sing in operas. This goes to show how sexism against women can ALSO be deeply unfair to _men._
@LRM12o82 жыл бұрын
Sexism and especially gender stereotypes often affects both genders. Our society assigns hobbies/interests, clothes/appearance and behaviors with genders and any boy who shows interest in 'girl' stuff and any girl interested in 'boys' stuff instantly gets looked at weird or told they can't do that. It limits us all in some way. Then ofc there's "women's jobs", like nurse, stewardess, hostess, hairstylist etc that are paid less because of that and men doing the job are often laughed at. The dumbest thing I've seen was when my teacher in 2nd grade elementary school spent an entire lesson on ranting about how boys were generally lazy and dumb whereas girls were always intelligent, studious and obedient and she'd much rather only teach girls than having to deal with us boys. Up until that point I was quite motivated to be a good student (despite often getting into trouble due to ADHD), but this crushed all hope of my efforts ever being recognized by the teacher and I just concluded that her low expectation towards boys means that I don't need to put in as much effort then. @@valerielhw yep, she definitely was a psycho that would have been fired anywhere else. The problem was she basically ran the school along with another teacher who was just like her. They each taught two grades in all the main subjects. And together they picked a kid from each year that they'd deem a troublemaker and treat worse from the start. I was one of them. Another one, two years older, failed 3rd grade and when a classmate asked this teacher why the kid had to repeat that year, she made a rant for the rest of the lesson about how dumb and lazy that kid is and how he's ruining his future. Guess what all the boys in the class (myself included) did in the following break! The poor kid was sobbing and tried to hide behind the dumpsters. We didn't know better. How would we, with such a twisted teacher as role model? Anyway, I was sort of an easy target, because I was a fast learner and had ADD, so it would often look like I wasn't paying attention when in reality I was done with my tasks or didn't need to hear another explanation. But I was rejected from the start anyway, evidenced by a "picture with funny caption" of me on my first day at school with a thought bubble above my head reading: "must I do t'is s'it every day now?" in the weekly school report. Something I wouldn't have said or thought, I was super proud to finally go to school like my older brother, but they saw me as the type of kid who would hate school and then went on to make sure I will. In 4th grade my parents got external help involved by a pedagogue, who has been helping parents and schools with "difficult" kids for 40 years and even he was shocked by how these teachers treated some of the students and said he's never seen anything like this in his career. And that I should go to a different elementary school asap for the last half year. Which we did and my grades immediately improved drastically and I just managed to qualify for gymnasium, the highest level of secondary school. (rather than going through steps, in Germany you have to select the degree of education you think you can achieve after 4th grade at 10 years old...). But, well the damage was done. By the time I got away from that hellhole I've already grown hostile, cause I knew no friendly jokes, only malicious attacks against me from my old class and had developed serious anger issues (could also have been a side-effect of Ritalin), so bullying became a problem again in the other elementary school and the secondary school, but at least it wasn't actively supported by the teachers! They were rather trying to help me, which was an important change. But it still took six more years and three attempts at therapy to brake out of the cycle and get rid of the temper that made me such a rewarding target for bullies.

It’s also best to neuter dogs after they are 12-24 months old (depending upon breed- basically the age they stop growing) as testosterone helps play a role in growth and joint health. Fascinating video. In sheep, very early castration can lead to a particular problem. In a ram (uncastrated male) the penis and therefore the urethra grows considerably larger as he matures. In a wether (castrated male) the urethra remains much narrower, especially if castrated very young. If for some reason the animal later develops urinary calculi (kidney or bladder stones), the narrow urethra of a wether can become blocked more easily, preventing the passing of urine and causing great pain. This usually means the animal dies or has to be culled. Urinary calculi are particularly common in sheep which have been fed on high energy feed for rapid growth, but they are rare in grass-fed animals. In rams the stones pass much more easily through their larger urethra, and in females the urethra is of course much shorter and also wider so they don't normally suffer from this problem. Male sheep reared for meat are nevertheless usually castrated, because if he has reached puberty before slaughter the meat can be strongly tainted, especially if he's slaughtered during the winter, which is the tupping (breeding) season in many types of sheep. Similarly the meat of uncastrated male goats and pigs can both have a male taint, especially in fattier cuts.

If a male cat who's been neutered turns their back to you and twitches their tail at the base, congrats, he just tried to spray you and you've had the foresight to neuter your cat. It's their version of humping your leg. Landlords generally like male cats to be neutered for this reason as the spray they leave behind smells to high heaven and requires a special cleaner to remove. *sighs and points to her cat* He tries to do it to me all the time when I won't drop everything and feed him. I go "haha, naughty boi" and keep going with minecraft XD sadly cats don't understand daylight savings time, so when I normally feed him at 4pm, if it's winter time, he thinks it's food time at 3pm instead and spends an hour throwing the feline version of a temper tantrum. Rubbing the corner of my monitor, climbing up on the desk in front of my screen, headbumping and when I put him on the ground and tell him to sit enough times he freaks out and starts chewing random items in an effort to SHRED them. If he progresses beyond that, (and he rarely does) then he tries to bite me when I make the gesture for him to sit. Then he goes in the bedroom for half an hour until he calms down.

It can cause issues with urination and is common in intact male dogs but may be asymptomatic. Basically many older dogs have it but it doesn't necessarily actually cause any problems so many dogs live normally with it. It's 'Benign' because it doesn't directly cause death, but it can cause complications that do, in symptomatic dogs. Basically, if they're not showing clinical signs, don't worry about it, it's not doing them any harm, but if they are showing clinical signs, time to get them castrated. The removal of the source of testosterone (testicles) usually resolves the issue because the prostate will reduce in size. Prostate _cancer_ is actually more common in desexed dogs.

@@skyeiron5872 Thanks for your comments! This dog was having a separate issue where they did imaging to look for problems in the lower spine, he ended up with elimination diagnosis of probably degenerative myelopathy (separate issue, he was only a single carrier for it so it was a very unusual presentation according to specialists). But while looking for spinal problems they found what was related to us as a tumor, maybe they said mass, I can't recall for sure. It did reduce after that surgery. The overall question in the video title is valid, our pets DO have changes or issues relating to neutering, it's just that they can't directly voice what the issues are. So medically they have to just collect statistics on how likely each of the changes are and whether they are detrimental in the long run. Whether human males should be subjected to castration when they are too aggressive, or have too many uncontrolled impregnations, well, that's a separate issue....🤔

Also i might add that this is way worse then if you were to even take estrogen as a boy because then you'd still develop much healthier even if more feminine. Basically when growing we need hormones typically although i understand there are medical exceptions

There is a significant amount of evidence pointing to Alan Turing's death being an accidental poisoning and not suicide. The medical examiner was extremely biased against Turing, and even Turing's mother insisted that he did not commit suicide and that the authorities labelling his death a suicide was their final act of slander against her son. Look it up, it's actually VERY interesting.

In reality, it's possible for men to sing high notes using their natural voice! It's incredible that they used to castrate boys and ruin their health for something that can be achieved naturally... Metal singers in particular, are a perfect example of this: They achieve notes which even most women don't usually reach without falsetto, through training. Not only that, it's possible for a skilled singer to sing in either falsetto, their regular voice, or anywhere in between, which, combined with vocal posture and other variables, makes for a basically limitless amount of possible sounds and tones. Source: I am a Metal singer.

What about psychological effects? Like Alan Turing suffering from depression immediately after he was castrated. Testosterone and other male hormones play a big part in mood, motivation, drive and general quality of life. Do castrated animals and men suffer from the psychological and psychiatric effects of not having male hormones?

On castrated dogs at least, there are growth issues, as you mentioned sex hormones control growth, so depending on when the dog is castrated the head may not broaden, the legs will grow too long among other physical deformities, weight can be a problem. In females if they don't have bladder control before being altered they will never gain bladder control and will dribble urine their entire life. I had a Sheltie cross that was pretty much the poster child for spay damage, she had every issue associated with spaying too early.

I was expecting a physiological explanation for why my pets don’t get osteoporosis. Do you know why?
@zakosist Жыл бұрын
Maybe just because they live shorter, so these health problems have less time to develop. I dont know, just suggesting, since it often happens in old age in humans
@lisar3944 Жыл бұрын
@@zakosist but a large part of the reason it happens in "old age" is due to hormone loss. At least for women. After menopause, women (who are not on hormone replacement) start losing bone density remarkably quickly. As do young women who lose their ovaries or have premature ovarian failure. The loss of estrogen is primary cause for osteoporosis in women, and it *just so happens* that normally this happens later in life. But it's not the age that's causing it, it's the loss of hormones. I honestly don't know how much of a problem osteoporosis is for men. I know all of my female relatives essentially died or had their quality of life hideously reduced as a result of complications of osteoporosis, while I don't recall any of my male relatives even being diagnosed with it. Not saying it's no problem for men, just no first hand knowledge about it in men :/
