Just turned 30. Best advice I would give someone 10 years younger is that you don’t have as much time as you think you do, or that others tell you that you do. Seemed to be common when I was 20 that older adults would tell me that I had plenty of time to figure my life out and try a million different things before I made a decision about my career, but this is simply not the case. The truth is you have no idea how much time you have because none of us know how long we have here. Your 20s fly by like the blink of an eye and if you spend them partying and jumping around from job to job you will end up very unhappy at age 30. Work hard now and reap the rewards when you’re still young enough to enjoy them. Everything has a pay price to action and if you want a good life, you need to sacrifice at some point. So the question is, when do you want to make that sacrifice? When you’re still young enough to? Or when it’s too late? Also, don’t listen to people who de-emphasize the importance of having money. If you want to travel, afford a house in a safe neighborhood, and take care of your family, you need money. A lot of it. Those who demonize wealth and convince you to simply “follow your passion” are more often than not, leading you to a fantasy world, and robbing you of time you could’ve spent grinding for financial comfort.
@emperormouse5487
@emperormouse5487 3 жыл бұрын
THIS! I hate when people say "follow your passion, its not about money". It is about money! The amount of money you have (up to a certain point) is directly correlated with the life you lead, things you do, and people you meet. As for passion, of course you should go into a field that you are passionate about, but that doesn't mean that it isn't hard work. I feel like a big thing kids don't understand is that work is work and hard work is a necessary aspect to any field. Going into a field you are passionate about doesn't negate that- you will still have to work your butt off if you want to be successful. That's why after much consideration, I started medical school at 23 and hopefully will be done by 30-32. I've never worked harder in my life, but I love what I am learning and every aspect about it. Hopefully in my 30s I will have the freedom (financial and otherwise) to more or less do what I want and lead the life I want.

"So the question is, when do you want to make that sacrifice? When you’re still young enough to? Or when it’s too late?" This is a question I only started pondering recently (at 20 years old), and I think it's a great one to ask. At some point, we have to "choose our damn sacrifice" as Jordan Peterson said. Everything in life has a pro and con to it. Do you want to sacrifice time when you are young in order to secure financial success for your older self, knowing full well that you are sacrificing time that you could be spending "living life to the fullest when you're in your prime?" Or do you want to "live it up" in your 20s and early adulthood, only to find yourself woefully screwed over in your older years? Are you wise enough at only 20 years old to be able to judge where a middle ground between those two extremes are? I, for one, would hesitate to say that most 20 year olds are wise enough to do that, and usually fall into one of the aforementioned camps wherein a conscious sacrifice is necessary. For me, being an introvert has made that choice relatively easy. I have no true desire to "live my life to the fullest" in the popular sense of the phrase. I have no desire to party every night, go to clubs, go drinking etc. So naturally the most logical answer for me was going to medical school and "sacrificing" 7+ years of my 20s in exchange for ostensible financial security when I'm older. Right now, I think I've made the right decision. I'd much rather "sacrifice" my 20's because I honestly don't know what the hell else I'd be doing if I weren't in medical school. Unfortunately, for others the decision isn't as clear cut. Particularly for extroverts, you actually have to decide how and when you want to sacrifice in life, because if you haven't already, you will have to do so in order to reach any form of success. Or you can just coast by if that's your prerogative.

34 here and , if i can go back and do my 20's again i wouldn't change anything besides focusing on myself a little more , stop chasing woman who didn't want me, and not act like i had all the time in the world to reach 30... when you're young your perception of time is much different when your older becuase you're on the earth for a shorter time frame..... its why in jr high and high school feels like forever when in reality its just a very short period in your life.. as you age you see that time is very short and the days months and years goes past very fast.

There's literally nothing about my 20s that I want to remember...it has been some of the darkest years of my life and I hope to God that I don't endure that kind of torment again...I'm a 30 year old woman and people would naturally assume that I might dislike my age but believe me I've never been better.....I found myself at 30 and I couldn't be any happier...

Im not 30 yet, but im closer to 30 than 20 now and I am making a dramatic shift in my career, which is very difficult with a wife and 2 kids. If I could give advice to someone in their 20s I would say that you have a choice about your career and it should be made sooner rather than later, and the choice is this: passion and purpose at work or comfort and stability at home, but it isnt as simple as people say. You can have both... eventually. It just takes work sometimes. When I was 20 I was trying to get a well paying job as a prison guard because my town was a prison town and i had connections, but my passion was in medicine. I decided instead to take the risk and go to nursing school, which put me in debt and im not even making as much, and now im planning on medical school. When I was younger i didnt think i was capable of medical school, and didnt realize what I was capable of until after nursing school. If I could go back, i would go straight for med school regardless of the challenges associated with it, they seem huge at 20, but they compound. If you put huge decisions like education off they get harder and harder until eventually they become impossible, so if you have a dream, dont delay at 20, just go for it!

Hey Kevin! First off, thank you for the advice! Where are the investing/finance books that you mentioned? I could not find them in the links in the description of the video. Thanks in advance!

You know what sucks? I definitely lost my ability to read books on a daily basis. I know there is no excuses but that happened after med school

This was really affirming and helpful. Especially the bit about travelling (alone or not alone) you don't have to do it to discover and build philosophies but it sure does stimulate a lot of intellectual growth and awareness about ourselves and the world. Also, I'm so so psyched that you also follow F1. Probably a Mercedes fan. Kevin Jubbal you are woke. If you ever come to Africa please announce it and have a meet and greet! :) or invite fellow meds to travel alongside you if that's not weird or anything. Just a suggestion. Edit: Also, on the bit about investing and being money wise. There's a popular culture here in Kenya where an informal group of people pool money by making manageable monthly contributions and then proceed to invest their money jointly e.g. into bonds, property, businesses. People apparently form these groups from the time they are in university and they could even last lifetimes - 30+ years. Going alone you'll go fast but going together means going further and so getting with a group could be a sustainable, easier and HIGH YIELD :) step towards getting moneywise. Just another thought if you do a part two of the video.

What I wish i would have known hmmm was hard to pass since my situation was pretty much inevitable I can’t say I wish what I knew because I have no glimpse into the future then but I am happy to know what I know now has given me freedom to do and be me and smarter at that about certain things... IF I knew what I knew now I would have my own house car and a good steady job and have went to college

If I were to be completely honest, I really enjoy this view of you. I have grown apart from the MSI channel over the past 4ish months because of the very corporate feel/plugging that is a bit off-putting. I'm not trying to be accusatory in that, but what I mean to say is, I appreciate more the human aspect of your business and yourself than the services you offer (though others may differ in perspective, obviously)

ah...snap. I have to go do things I set out doing (finish my post-bacc pre-med) and quit my (stable) hospital nursing staff position now that I've got my experience. After my nursing bachelor's program, I set a goal for myself that I need to do hospital work to at least give my due diligence to learn what they do as hospital nurses, but I'm not happy. It may feel great to other people, but I have more satisfaction visiting patients in a home setting like I help more. I think I will go back to doing home health full time to also be able to accomodate my pre-med classes. It certainly doesn't hurt that home health is financially better for me, and I'll be returning to a normal sleep cycle (i work nights, I'm ALWAYS EXHAUSTED!!!!). Okay anyway, end rant, I think it's time to move on from hospital.
