The thing is, you're speaking from a "now" perspective and trying to relate it to "then". You get your idea when you get it. You can only imagine "if I had started then", but, was the idea there then? I would argue that you got some ideas from experiencing some new reality at a specific point in time, and, you started to chase it from then. So, just enjoy life and do what you do, when you do. She's giving some solid advice still.
