Having just gone through Hurricane Helene, people had no choice. The water rose several feet in minutes until in some areas it was as high as 50'. In other areas, people watched as their loved ones, their animals, and pets were carried away by landslides. There was nothing that could be done. In fact, even animals who survived are still suffering because shelters are gone. Fencing is gone. Their supplies and feed are gone. This is when we, as fellow human beings, cone alongside to help. Hopefully, none of us has to make that horrible choice. My coop was OK. Our chickens handled it well. We had some minor damage to the runs. But I often think about the horror those people faced when they could notvsave their precious animals . 😒😔

My husband has been in the propane business for 20 years and that odorant is put into propane so leaks can be detected. It is not a pleasant smell for sure. Funny it traveled that far. Wonder how much leaked??? I also have the misfortune to live in so Cal and have been through about half a dozen forest fires now. In the last one, which was extremely close to our house, I decided to evacuate my chickens. I put them all in crates and put the crates in the back of the truck and drove the hour to the animal shelter that was caring for evacuated animals. It was July and by the time we got to the animal shelter, one chicken was dead and the rest were on their way to dying from the heat. Thankfully, they were taken into a pen right away and given water and a fan. The animal shelter did a great job caring for my chickens as well as other people's flocks and kept each person's flock together in their own pen, but it was stressful as the chickens were in a new place with different food, etc. In hindsight though, I would not do this again. It was incredibly stressful for the hens and for me. Getting them back home again was another ordeal. In future, we have decided that since the chickens have a covered run that is all metal, we will be leaving them and hoping for the best. I felt so bad that one of them died when I could have left them at home and they would have been fine. It is not an easy decision to make as you never know when this fire will be the one that takes your home out, but when you have to flee from your home, you just have to do the best you can. Even though we had several days warning to get out, the weather was in the 90s every day and I had no way to transport them in an air conditioned vehicle. In this case, trying to save them, was worse than leaving them. So you just do the best you can and you make your decisions with the knowledge you have at the time. Usually it turns into pandemonium during large scale evacuations, and you cannot say what you would or would not do until you are in that position and sometimes, you don't have the time to do what you would like to do. Sad but true.

I've been worrying about this for years. I have 2 dogs, 11 cats from when I was doing TNR and 13 chickens. I thought of buying a "schoolie bus" for transport but I couldn't afford it. I live in NY which currently is on target for WWIII and we have all these drones flying around now with the rumor of missing radioactive...fill in the blank. Whew! I feel doomed with all this. Even to capture all of these babies in a limited time frame is mind boggling. I feel your pain!

When the fires of 2020 started where I live in Oregon I told my family I’m not leaving without my animals. I had over 20 chickens and 4 ducks and 4 dogs. I rounded them all up and someone donated a tent to house my chickens and ducks for two weeks while we were displaced.

So glad you are ok! You can’t pack up the entire wilderness with you to safety. Or even all your homestead animals. It’s an awful feeling but you do your best! People have rescues for wild cats, wolves, and foxes. They can’t load them all up on the spot and go. Doesn’t mean they don’t care or shouldn’t have them! ❤

Be aware of this weird possibility: My husband walked past the stove in our travel trailer and something on his clothing caught on one of the knobs, but not so he could notice. Luckily, and I do mean luckily, several days later I smelled it but thought the regulator outside was leaking. Then I went inside and saw the knob on the stove was slightly askew. He was going in there occasionally to retrieve things, read, etc and thank God nothing happened. So be aware this can happen. So glad you're safe!

The nice thing about using chicken tractors for coops is if they're narrow enough they can be loaded on a flat bed trailer. What's even better if it's built on top of a flat bed trailer just load up, hook up & go. Chickens may get somewhat stressed on the road trip but they would be in the coop they're used to.

We had a flood here August 18th in our area and a breeder that I get my chickens from lost her entire huge metal Barn, the water washed away 100 chickens that she had and she was devastated and so were the rest of us who buy from her... she's still trying to raise money to rebuild because insurance won't cover it but the devastation of how the chickens died by drowning in the flood and the barn just collapsing with them is too horrific to even fathom.

I personally think there are many levels to your statement. Not just black and white. Many people dont take the care and time for their animals in an emergency situation because most can not operate under pressure. There are some people who just dont care enough, their animals are of least importance which is very sad. this is real world stuff and i understand the judgment. Ultimately im truly glad this was not a true emergency for you, meaning im beyond happy everyone is ok in chickenlandia!❤❤❤❤❤❤️

The moment when you feel your brain accept that Awful Thing is really truly happening Right Now and that ACTION IS REQUIRED. Oh man. It’s a terrible feeling. But the only way to get through it with the least damage is to accept it, and deal. Yay you, for getting there. And may we all be more ready for our own future trials, because you had the guts to share.

I'd like to add that if you live rurally and have an LP tank, you can shut off your gas if your tank is a safe distance away from your house/building. I had a gas leak inside my house once when I was at work. It had blew the regulator on the house which then caused the regulator on the furnace to go out. Thankfully, the safety system on the furnace kept it from trying to light or my house would have blown up with my pets inside. It was a repairman who was there for something else that caught it and called it in. By the Grace of God I still have a house and nobody was hurt or worse.

I too have seen those judgmental comments, but sometimes there isn't time to save all the animals no matter how badly you want to. You can make all the right evacuation plans, but it takes time to collect livestock and outdoor pets. Sometimes all you can do is open the gate and hope their instincts help them escape disaster. I've ran out and opened all the gates on the smaller pastures in a raging storm with a tornado on the ground heading towards us. They were still fenced in on my property, but at least they had a chance of getting out of the way if it was a direct hit and figured they could go over or even through the perimeter fence with little to no injury, if the threat was enough. I've seen too many horses and other livestock trapped and killed locked in barns, so when there's a threat of tornadoes I keep them out on pasture with run in shelters. There are always those horses that insist on staying out in the storm which drives me nuts because I had 2 struck by lightening at the same time when I was a kid. Sometimes, it's impossible to protect them from everything. BUT it's easy to think you can until you meet reality.

Well, it is a bit difficult to guess what you have actually smelled. The typical rotten egg smell is that of hydrogen sulfide H2S, which is not used as an additive in gas. It is an acid and corrosive. Instead, they use Methanethiol (Mercaptan) CH3SH for that purpose. It has a distinctive smell, which people associate with gas, but many people will not be able to distinguish it from hydrogen sulfide and will associate it with rotten eggs too. That's because of the sulfur it has (in the thiol/mercapto form SH). They both occur naturally as a byproduct of plant decay in marshes, but are also found in sewage, natural gas, coal and crude oil. So, the source could be anything, from natural cracks in the soil releasing trapped gas from deep layers containing organic material (coal, oil), to a sudden release of gases from the bottom of swamps, a big leak of a large-bore sewage pipe, a leak from a gas pipeline, large piles of dung or large fields firtilized with dung or worse, with untreated sewage water... It could also come from illegal dumping of chemical wastes. So, better keep a watch on any factories in the vicinity. Mercaptan, for example, can be released as a by-product from factories treating wood pulp for making paper... The good thing is that as long as you can smell it you are safe. Human smelling threshold for these gases is very low, something around 0.005 ppl, well below toxic levels. If the concentration reaches 100-150 ppl, your olfactory system will become overwhelmed and you'll stop smelling it... That's when you will step into the danger zone... A bit higher than that concentration will irritate your airways and your eyes... I wouldn't be too alarmed if there are no gas pipelines or potential volcanoes around. But really, keep an eye on factories around and dumping of waste. Where there is Mercaptan or hydrogen sulfide there could also be other more toxic and hazardous compounds. No government or big money could be trusted. The public should always keep the whip in its hand...

Some cities prefer you contact your local gas utility rather than 911. All the fire department can do is turn off your gas meter, while your gas utility can actually repair the gas leak. This also leaves the emergency responders free to take care of more pressing emergencies.

2020 was not only the year Cova 19. it's also a year we had evacuated a forest fire We're only able to take a couple animals with us, I was only allowed to bring my parakeets and we grabbed our dogs and the cats, and we just left all of my chickens my ducks and my three month old gosling, I was just not allowed to take any of them because we didn't know if we would find a place that would allow them. At first we were going to live with our aunt which her area did not allow any poultry and then we knew another person and after we settled in there we were able to go back to our house the next day to Grab stuff that we left behind and pick up the rest of my animals, And while we're there we're technically in level three evacuation and had to wear masks and there's ashes everywhere and I was told if I see any orange light we had to leave immediately, luckily we never saw any orange light and we were able to leave With all our animals and we're also able to pick up someone else's chickens who would be left behind And their son was absolutely devastated. Luckily after about 10 days we were able to return home and the fire only made it about two miles from our house.

My hobby farm already has emergency plans for everything that you can think of except sink holes. My birds are trained to go to their coop on command ( "Birds to bed) so I can get them into transport cages to evacuate to a predetermined location for them. Yes, I have other animals too. Including barn cats who are trained in recall. I have emergency "bob bags" (tote with wheels labeled with names or numbers) with copies of vet records, feed, and anything else that they may need for the care each animal. So it is not hard to evacuate with my animal with a livestock trailer. I have other emergency situations planned out to and biosecurity measure in place of everything that every one can think of. My family knows about the blue binder that has every single animal that has been on this property past and present with photos, vet records, past with cause of death, emergency plans, feeding schedules, birth records, inventory, and ect. I also tracked anything that can be harmful for my animals like the smoke coming from Canada's fires, Ohio's train event, or RHDV and Bird Flu local near me everyday. So I understand how hard it is because even with my plans they may not even work. In that situation we have a plan in place for that too. So sorry you had to choose which one to take and which to leave. Glad you found out what was happening. Can't wait for the next video.

You were tired. I entered a contest recently to win a campervan - not something I would usually do but I was thinking of the hens in case we had forest fires.

I like what you teach and do to encourage chicken keeping. I do have issue with your motto: "Changing the World One Chicken At A Time". With all the efforts to unlive chickens, ducks, geese and destroying our food supply and causing famine, you are encouraging us to have chickens. Change your motto to: "Saving the World One Chicken at A Time"

People are so quick to criticize. They sit on social media, watch a video and think that they know what happens and how they would react in that situation. But unless you’ve been in a natural disaster or an honest God emergency, you don’t know how you would react or how it is. so tell the people that are criticizing to F off. When it comes to life and death, you have to prioritize and you usually don’t have much time to do it.

NEVER JUDGE, NEVER GUILT SOMEONE FOR WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN EMERGENCY LEAST YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF IN THAT SITUATION. NEVER IGNORE A POSSIBLE LEAK NOT MATTER WHAT.... I worked on college campus, while walking along the back of the buildings (which was housed student aparts on the upper levels and had businesses on the the street level) I smelled gas. I sniffed the smell to the reader... it was very very light. However i am sensitive having dealt with it before. I told my boss who didn't believe me. I decided to call 911 in front of him. I was told he was going to fire me for wasting their time. Jokes on him.. there was a small leak at a junction point. I was thanked profusely by the fire crew as it was such a small leak, it would have and had been over looked by many and almost missed by them when they got there... they had to use a measuring device after i lead them to the leak...

In an emergency, I’ll do absolutely everything I can to get my dogs and my cat out. But my reptiles and my chickens, unfortunately are not gonna be at the top of the priority list.

This has nothing to do with this but my chicken has a growing, hard bump on her head. She’s had it for a month now and I feel SO bad I didn’t take care of it sooner. What should I do? (Btw I can’t go to a vet)

Sulfur smell, they add this to natural gas. Also this smell(sulfur) could possibly be present in earthquakes when the ground opens up.

Well when I smell rotten eggs it's usually rotten eggs and then they start exploding 🤣 I have natural gas instead of propane though. Very different smell.

These people need to remember that when push comes to shove, the lives of our families and neighbors matter more than the lives of our animals and livestock. They have No right to judge people who sometimes have minutes, or even seconds, to make life saving/altering decisions for their families.

Where you in the area when they had that giant pipeline explosion that killed the kids north of Bellingham? Sulfur smell could also be fertilizer on crops. I remember smelling that here for days thinking we were in for some volcanic activity like seeping (I live in the foothills close to Rainier and Adams on the eastside). It was a sulfur compound on the orchards.
