When I was 20, some unresolved childhood trauma met up with clinical depression I didn't realize I had going on so instead of calling a doctor I started using opiates to self-medicate. (Got in car wreck, not my fault, broken pelvis, 2003, they THREW oxy at me for MONTHS.) All I knew was the pills relieved the depression. It had been YEARS since I had gone a whole day without wishing for the courage to end my life. Obviously, I had no clue what I was getting into. The break healed, pills went bye-bye. Depression returned, I started getting street drugs, typical chaos and disaster ensued... So by 26 I was clean. But also broke. Never finished my degree. Hadn't held a steady job in years. Burned a lot of bridges. Embarrassed as all hell. Deeply ashamed. Lots of regrets. Lonely. New case of PTSD on board now, from a brutal SA at 25. I'll spare you the details, but let's just say it was bad. All SA is. But this was particularly so. For 10 years I left my mom's house maybe 15 times for something other than psych appts, therapist appts, sobriety counseling appts, random drug tests (my mom made this conditional - proud to say I passed 'em ALL! Every one! 😀😀😀) or something to do with my cats. (I rescue and take hospice cats. Done it since age 15, obviously not from 20-26, but I picked it up at 27 and still doing it now at 41.) Tangent time, sorry. Yeah, so I get it. I've never had a BAD weight problem, but I had a LOT of shame. I was terrified of seeing my old friends. Most really loved me, too. And were so happy I was just not dead. And nobody was hard on me. Never to my face, anyway. Nobody scolded me or shamed me, or shoved their happiness and accomplishments down my throat. But they didn't have to. Seeing a perfectly normal, not at all bragging, post of a friend my same age getting their Ph.D, or honeymoon pictures, or 1st day of school for their cute little kid... those things used to magnify my despair and I couldn't shake it for a LONG time. I didn't wish anything but the best for my friends! I TRULY was happy for them too! But just seeing a person near my age with their shit together and a smile and cute outfit... for a long, long time people like that just absolutely broke my heart to see. I was NEVER mean or rude or ANYTHING like this bitch, though! My God, that is some serious, Deeeep anger down in her soul. She was like SEETHING. Honestly it was tough to get through the episode. In one way I completely related to this clearly suffering woman, hidden away, miserable and ashamed of herself. I understood WHY she reacted to those women that way. I just can't relate to expressing her jealousy in such a combative and frankly, abusive way. I don't function like that. It's crazy because I bet we felt the same on the inside, but the way I handled that jealousy was just on a whole other planet of different from how Lisa expressed it. My God she was awful! Randy died from covid, his health was already bad before that and she didn't care much. She also caught covid but survived. The death of Randy kind of humbled her actually, she wasn't rude anymore and listened to the doctor.

The problem here is they didn’t think to tackle her mental health first. She’s been through a lot of trauma from her past which was the trigger to start binge eating. Even if she wanted to start a new diet and exercising routines, she will break it within minutes. She’s really suffering from depression and I think they should deal with that first before anything

That's the thing that bugs me about the show the most. I don't get it why don't they go see a therapist first before getting weight loss surgery but I guess it creates the drama. 🤷‍♀️

​@@WitchyWhaleUhh... they did exactly what you're referring to. Even in this specific episode, he goes on to tell her she needs to see a mental health specialist and that prior to any surgery. They had also connected many patients to therapists in the early stages and before giving them the surgery. I've seen it on many episodes. The problem when it comes to this specific clip is that this is very early on in the episode where she was bed bound and in a completely different part of the country to where Dr Now was. He was able to send a local dietician and physical therapist to her home, but the psychological therapists that Dr Now is hooked up with are based in Houston where he is so he couldn't go that route yet at this point. He does bring it up soon after this though when she's in hospital.

They edited it out of this clip but once the Dietician left and then when she ordered the physical therapist to leave, she then proceeded to go on a racist tirade about white people. Judging both of the women who came to see them based on their skin color and Caucasian race. She was saying racist things about white people, despite the fact that she is clearly (at least) mostly Caucasian herself. So I'm assuming she's one of those people who are 10/20% non white and cling to that as if that makes them a minority or something. His partner was also clearly white.

Finally a compassionate response ❤ She wants the help but is physically trapped and mentally trapped. She's not mentally ready to face things. People lash out when afraid or avoid situations and I suspect that is happening here. Her shouting at the door seems rude but if taken from the perspective of fear, it's an understandable reaction. She can't let them in, she can't escape them either. They are there in her face, personal space whether she wants it or not and that's scary. Also she'd not told anyone about the rape as a child. That leaves horrendous mental scars and can leave physical ones. I saw a Hoarders one where the lady had been raped and it triggered her hoarding, this triggered the ladies eating to make sure Noone touched her again. That's rejecting people too. I know she's not currently ready to deal with her situation and I really doubt that she ever will be. I'm suspicious about the relationship too, he barely says a word but serves her a HUGE breakfast which is more than I could eat in a day. It's also unhealthy as I suspect their relationship is. Keeping her trapped in the bed equals trapping her in the relationship. There's a Lot more to this than 'entertainment' and I feel very sorry for her. I also feel sorry for those trying to help her too but I trust that they are professional enough to understand and see through what's going on 😔
