It’s because of a very unexpected key change. The succession of notes work, but the last note isn’t typically how such a series of notes would end (which is why most of us get it wrong half the time). Cleverer people than us might be able to give it a name, like “Lydian” or “mixolydian”, etc.

What has always struck me about this song is how full sounding this simple two part harmony is. For a long time I suspected that George was slipping one of his sly middle harmony parts in there. But no...it’s a two part harmony sung by three voices. Lennon’s low harmony part is double tracked. The effect is just brilliant in its simplicity.

For harmonies, vibrato-less approach works best. It is a part of good harmony technique to ensure that the voices blend perfectly. For solo singing though, vibrato is very useful to add towards one's expression and make his or her voice stand out.

Paul is a genius at harmony in general. There are SO many examples where he is singing harmony with someone else, and he makes the other person sound amazing. I suggest the live version of him singing Something with Eric Clapton. Eric uses vibrato, McCartney doesn't. Clapton's voice isn't special but Paul makes it sound gorgeous. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp2Qc4GKmq-LoNk&feature=emb_logo

I was transfixed by the harmony . I owned some albums but at $3.88 Mono 4.88 Stereo, babysitting 6 boys and one girl for 25 cents an hour, I could own all. I remember buying them. The first and last of whatever that was.

@GT380man
@GT380man Жыл бұрын
Wow indeed. The odd thing I find is that, instead of questioning that remark, which we should, given none of the Fab Four had had any musical training, we accept it, because we’re told it’s true. I’ve always loved this song since, as a tiny child, I was allowed to mess around with my parents discarded “Dansette” record player, blue and yellow, if I recall correctly. Like many households, we had a pile of records, mostly singles (“45s”), and If I Fell was among them. Right up to aged 63, it never once crossed my mind to ask the question, “Are the songs plausibly written as claimed.” I no longer think so.

@strathman7501
@strathman7501 2 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that Paul wrote the intro? I have heard this before but never seen a reliable source. According to John himself, it was the bridge section that Paul provided: "It was If I Fell where he gave me the middle-eight on the F." If you have a source regarding the intro i'd love to see it. Thanks.
@S0nyToprano
@S0nyToprano 2 жыл бұрын
I think they wrote quite a few good songs in their own right. The one that always sticks out to me the most is Imagine… despite how overdone that example is. We have to remember that by the start of the White Album, their songwriting partnership was not as strong as it was before. So often times you’d have John or Paul write like 95% or more of the song and the other providing maybe 1 or 2 very small pieces of feedback that would generally bring minor changes to the song.
@aidanhickey9845

@@strathman7501I think John was confusing that with another song. "If I Fell" doesn't even have an F in it.
@myguitardetective5961
@myguitardetective5961 3 ай бұрын
No, Paul did not write the intro -John wrote the entire song (it's on his work demo composed in a key too difficult for him to sing). Paul arranged the low harmony part for John to sing turning it into a two part harmony ballad: their best ballad in my estimation.. In Q Magazine Paul falsely claimed the intro for himself: he's been doing that a lot in his old age. Fortunately, for most of his claims, we have the documentation and the tapes (as here) that settle these matters of compositional authorship.
@myguitardetective5961
@myguitardetective5961 3 ай бұрын
@@aidanhickey9845 He confused it with "In My Life" (as he suggested he might have done in the David Sheff interview). That F chord in the middle-eight is in "In My Life"..." For (F) people and friends..." That odd half-step drop was a trick Paul learned from Joan Baez's cover of the Jamaican slave song "All My Trials"...an idea that he first "nicked" in the Beatles song "I'll Get You"" and that he fell back on time and again (most notably in "Penny Lane").

Actually, it's John Lennon who wrote this song, and he credit to himself and Paul McCartney. John sang the lead on the intro, then Paul sang in a high lead while John sang harmony. John & Paul sang the rest of the song together into the same microphone when recording the song. It is one of my most favourite💕 Beatles' songs🎶🎤🎵🎼🎸🥁🎹🎺🎻🎷 in early 1960s.

Of all The Beatle love songs ... this is my favorite. Incredible harmony on this song. John provides the solid and relatively "flat" vocal that allows Paul's high harmony to soar.

Smufter 16, not sure what you mean by John's relatively "flat" vocal. Have you heard the original tape recording of John composing this and singing the harmony as well as alternating it with the melody he wrote for Paul to sing? Raw, amazing, and moving.

I always thought this song had three part harmonies. Was I wrong? It just sounds so beautiful that it seemed like it could not possibly be just two voices 🤔

The original recording is three voices singing a two part harmony. Lennon’s part is double tracked, and you can sometimes hear that there are two voices singing the same low harmony. That’s why it sounds so full.

If I give my heart To you I must be sure From the very start That you Would love me more than her If I trust in you Oh please Don't run and hide If I love you too Oh please Don't hurt my pride like her 'Cause I couldn't stand the pain And I Would be sad If our new love was in vain So I hope you see That I Would love to love you And that she Will cry When she learns we are two 'Cause I couldn't stand the pain And I Would be sad If our new love was in vain So I hope you see That I Would love to love you And that she will cry When she learns we are two If I fell in love with you...
