John came up with this lower harmony because the original high harmony (you can actually hear him singing it in an early demo of If I Fell) was too high for him to sing comfortably. But in fact this harmony is what, in my opinion at least, gives If I Fell it's haunting quality. With only Paul's line, it sounds like a happy song, with only John's, it sounds very sad. Put them together and you get a beautifully conflicted sentiment which is exactly what we see in the lyrics too.

Yes, and the way John sang harmony BENEATH Paul’s high lead was actually quite unusual for popular music, then and still now. It’s like great Cuban music where harmonies are beneath the melody for example. So much more strong and interesting than the typical high harmony above the melody in thirds.

It would be like if we isolated all the harmonies from a song like This Boy, or Yes It Is. They sound beautiful together, but would they sound as good in isolation? I think not. The fact that this line sounds so “out of place” on its own, yet meshes perfectly with the lead line, is what makes it an even better harmony,. And the fact that John came up with two very different harmonies and made them work like this is breathtaking.

It sounds weird only to those that have never heard of, or learned the standard 4-part music harmony that includes soprano, alto, tenor, and bass notes.. Singing in any chorus, church choir, taking a class in music appreciation, would help one learn about this most easily..

I can't imagine how difficult it was to sing this harmony line. I've tried and always fail, always end up following the lead vocal. Also seems unusual that John would be essentially singing back-up on his own composition, while Paul sang lead. These guys were just naturally blessed talents.

This is really getting magical ... when you get all these done, you've gotta give us a video showing how you do it! Separating the individual voices seems like it should be impossible. I can make out a bit of the non-featured singer only when they're briefly going into unison but when they're in harmony ... wow ... it's just miraculous what you've done here. And in 1964, they recorded the voices onto the same track right, so even if you had the original 4-track. Checking Jerry Hammack book, he say John and Paul recorded together on track 2, then later overdubbed the same parts on track 4. So have you got some kind of super narrow EQ filter that can be automated to change the center frequency with each note?? It's magic!
@jacquescousteau217
@jacquescousteau217 3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing. This was prior to ADT ( automatic double tracking ) . I can look it up,and see how tracks were layered. You’re right in mid verses Johns singing melody,and Paul is doubling him. Amazed that Paul could make his voice sound like John’s when he needed or wanted to. Imagine ANY vocal pop group today recording on four tracks analogue . They wouldn’t be able to by a long shot. Choirs ,accapella groups could do it ,but nobody in popular music I can think of.

They also double-tracked their voices, so it would have a fuller sound, sometimes, just a tiny bit behind the first track, to give it that kind of echo effect too.. George Martin was the genius behind all their music sounding so well.. If I fell in love with you Would you promise to be true And help me Understand 'Cause I've been in love before And I found that love was more Than just Holding hands If I give my heart To you I must be sure From the very start That you Would love me more than her If I trust in you Oh please Don't run and hide If I love you too Oh please Don't hurt my pride like her 'Cause I couldn't stand the pain And I Would be sad If our new love was in vain So I hope you see That I Would love to love you And that she Will cry When she learns we are two 'Cause I couldn't stand the pain And I Would be sad If our new love was in vain So I hope you see That I Would love to love you And that she will cry When she learns we are two If I fell in love with you...

This is my all time favorite break down of the Beatles harmonies that you have ever done! I listen to John’s part of IF I Fell, more than I listen to the Paul part which is often. The song simply touches my being as no other song ever has! That may sound strange, but it does. It always makes me feel happy,content…without connection to any particular person. To me it is the greatest love song ever written!

If I Fell is probably one of the most complex duets ever composed and vocalized. Another great harmonious song is, imho, Never My Love by The Association. What is your favorite harmonically balanced song?

What makes this harmony,and many other Beatles harmony parts is they strayed far from the norm. Prior to the Beatles almost all-possibly 95% of harmonies -were based on a major triad , the 3 rd being the obvious choice, and yes it was almost always the high part . - caveat- Always is a word one should never use,hence I gave myself a little wiggle room for the other 5%. The Beach Boys also used sophisticated harmonies - I sang very high,when I was younger I was in Paul’s range. Recently I did a vocal only on “ you won’t see me “ no mic,did it lying in bed on iPad ,same key as the Beatles. I got the high harmonies on the bridge “ I wouldn’t mind if I knew what I was missing “ But ! I missed the harmony on the chorus every time. I sang a natural third. I didn’t hear the mistake ! I sent the iPad recording to a friend of mine that is brilliant musician,and singer. I said I knew something was wrong, please tell me where I missed it. Be honest don’t worry about hurting my feeling “ He wrote me back. “ You sang the wrong part on the harmony on the chorus “ You won’t see me “ you sang a third , it’s a fourth higher,not a third,. You were off a semitone. I’m so sorry your hearing is going out on you “ He was absolutely right. You can’t take things for granted when singing Beatles harmony parts,listen closely. I never would have made that mistake ten years ago. There are times you have to suck it up ,and face reality with humility . If anyone reading this is a singer - I was a session guitar,bass,and vocal player . If your voice is a high tenor it’s generally the bridges where Paul went very high while a Beatles. I pointed out a couple of “bridges” where Paul’s singing an entire octave above John. I’ll Get You,and Baby’s In Black are two off top of head in respect to two part harmonies . But the high harmony on I Will is another great as example of stretching it, whisper it . Don’t get lazy,and complacent when singing harmonies . If you’ve got the gift for it, and the range use it. Baritone vocals are the most under appreciated of all. “If I Fell” is a great example. The lower vocal adds so much to a harmony. Mike Love was a terrible lead singer - why he sang lead on so many Beach Boys tunes I’ll never understand - BUT ! Mike had an incredible ear for low harmony parts. Just like Brian had the high falsetto to great effect ,Mike had that on the low end. With that said Carl was the best full voice singer in the Beach Boys ,Carl was close to Paul vocally ...

eira A -- Not it is not difficult at all... If you have a basic understanding of music and have sung before in choirs, groups, etc., that all harmonized, and are pretty good or better at sight reading music, then this is ju..st another song to read and sing... I am sure George Martin had a lot to do with this sounding so enchanting..
