Just want to say thank you for having this conversation. I can’t overstate how much I needed this. Thank you, dear brothers, for pointing me to Christ for my hope, rest, joy, and even good works. Grace and peace.

Appreciate this discussion. My faith in Christ has been growing progressively towards Covenantal and Confessional faith. I was born again reading Parable of the Lost Coin in my bedroom, went to church 7 days a week at the nearest Calvary Chapel I was recommended to. Joined and became a member of a small Calvinist, Dispi, Pre-Mill Baptist church and now reforming and being "born again, born again" to the Covenantal framework. I am not there yet, but the light and fire is slowly brightening. Thank you for being one of the embers of that light.

That's how I felt when I finally heard about preterism. I totally believe it and it felt like a weight was lifted off my back. It made sooooo much sense. Now I read Gary Demar.

Confessionalism is great if the confession you use is inerrant. The confessions I know of have errors. By being confessional you are propagating the errors in whatever confession you use. For instance sabbatarianism is against scripture. I would recommend you guys read The Usefulness of Catachisms Considered by John Glas in his Works volume 2. The fewer words or more concise in a statement of faith means the less chances of making errors.

The “fewer words” argument can also lead to greater vagueness and opportunity for misinterpretation. For example… You can’t get more “fewer words” than the “No creed but Christ” guys, but that statement requires the holder to define what he means by the term “Christ!” The Mormon Christ? The JW Christ? The Jesus of Islam? Surely less can’t mean more, unless it means more chance for misinterpretation. If inerrancy is the standard of of all Holy Spirit uninspired writings, we should all give up any teaching, preaching, and writing. Surely your church’s statement of faith should also be held up to that standard. In fact, it is confessing that Scripture is the final authority that is the initial aim of the confession, not pointing to the confession itself. Reeves said, “Those of us who love the 1689 Confession love it because we love the Scriptures. Far from denying or competing with the authority of Scripture, a historic biblical confession such as the 1689 actually promotes and confirms the Scriptures as our final authority. If there is any doubt in our minds, the confession removes it in the very first line: “The Holy Scripture is the only sufficient, certain, and infallible rule of all saving knowledge, faith, and obedience.” But the confession affirms more than the authority of Scripture. It affirms that these authoritative Scriptures actually teach specific doctrines. The authoritative Scriptures will do us no good if we cannot say what they actually teach. The confession expresses the conviction that the Scriptures deliver to us a coherent, life-altering body of teaching-the faith (Jude 3).”

And if you disagree with a confession, Scott, I’d say that confession did what it aimed to do. It was clear about what it confessed and you disagreed with it. Being confessional leads to clarity, not to error. Hopefully there is a historic creed or confession that you can, in clear conscience, hold to and agree with. Grace to you, brother.
