The first Maths question Poppt answered is the reason why teachers in most school systems are "underpayed". Seriously, from my time as a college teacher (and those of my family) most elementary and highschool teachers understand the material they teach barely themselves and rather teach tricks they use to solve issues. But the moment a student doesn't understand their trick or require to solve more complex problems they basically require completely relearning. And you'd expect students to do and understand basic maths when they enter college, but sadly a lot don't and fall flat.
