Cuttino is absolutely right about defending the post. I have a new buddy I play one-on-one with. I'm a good outside shooter, but he likes to post up. We're about the same height. The first couple games I destroy him by stroking 3s. The last couple he starts posting me up on every possession, and with no shot clock, can just keep leaning on me and wearing my legs down. Once that happens, my outside shots stop falling, and I don't have the energy to drive to the bucket.

I’m glad you brought this up. Litterally all of James Harden’s offensive skills translate into post offense: Strength, footwork, ability to draw contact, change of direction speed, ability shoot while moving in different directions, passing, etc. He could be an even more deadly offensive weapon if he committed to working on his footwork in the post.

That's right, but you are comparing a player who posted a good part of his career and exercised his moves and footwork for this with a player who prefers long range and driving. Also adding the fact that Kobe had a great defensive game and was pushing his limits every game. I don't see that from a lot of players today. Not to mention, that Jordan was a great defender at the same time.

Cutino is correct. Guarding someone who posts up a lot is exhausting. It really takes out your legs. This is just smart basketball. If you have a big man (the 5) that can shoot 3s like Brook Lopez, you can pull away bigs from the paint and have your point guard post up and shoot.
@ctaylor28055 жыл бұрын
Yes he should! Ive been thinking this! He already has a good step back off of his elbow, like the one he did on iggy in 2015. He needs to use his midrange more, and if he develops a fadeaway than that would be even better. He also needs to speed up the amount of dribbles he makes(which means fewer) and at very least when hes at the top of the key move alittle bit more so the defense doesnt think your gonna dribble in one spot and lull defenders to sleep. That's what got im trapped in the GS series.

The reason why Harden is so hard to guard when he isos at the three point is because he has the Step back three in his bag. Defenders have to play for both the drive and the step back three. For most guys you dont have to press up as much because its a step back three, most maybe make like 30%, but Harden can legitimately make close 40% of those if not closed out on. If he posts up inside, the defender (usually the best team defender) doesn't have to worry as much about the step back as much since he knows Harden is more so trying to get inside to score or draw FTs. A step back 2 at 40% is something defense can live with from Harden. T That's why Harden is always starting from the 3 pt line. Its just straight up more efficient, and you know how much the Rockets love those.

An interesting and bold idea. I think come playoffs it could help when the game slows down and scoring becomes harder. Harden could perhaps use this as a way of getting a few simple buckets or more wide-open shots for teammates. But I still want to see how efficient Harden could be from the post. Not entirely sold.

Problem is this team is not the same one that has had snipers like Anderson, Ariza, and Paul for 3 point shooting in the past. Westbrook being a starter diminishes most of the value created from Harden posting up.
@f0rtyy8155 жыл бұрын
while thats true in a way, posting up doesnt need to generate alot of 3s. theres shooters, and cutters. hitting ur cutters with a quick pick and pop can easily lead to defensive errors. lets say harden is on left block. give russ offball screen to baseline on the right wing and i forgot the rockets roster but a stretch big off-ball screen into a pop 3. harden has 2 options along with creating for himself. russ can pop back out other side if the cut is ineffective and the guy on top can cut right side. russ can make his open shots so thats a simple play thats rlly effective. if everyone stands while harden posts, well then thats the problem right there.
@aja3longhorn3755 жыл бұрын
@@f0rtyy815 I see what you are saying but trust me I know this team. Cutting in the lane is not a strong suit of the personnel by offensive design. The only shooter who can get a look off quick from a screen with relative efficiency is Eric Gordon. Tucker is limited to corner which is not ideal for posting up. Green is inefficient and Danuel House must be WIDE OPEN to hit a 3. Russ has issues even on wide open shots. It's probably relatively good points per possession but I just don't think it is as effective as pick and roll with Capela.

Half a century ago, people dreamt of flying cars and living on Mars...but little did they know that the real REVOLUTION of man is for Guards to post up and Centres to shoot 3s.....( I am a post up guard all my life, people think I am crazy.....until they see me skyhook it in....)

This might actually work. The only problem is whether or not D Antoni will allow it because this can absolutely help their offense and not be that predictable

0:30 i watched this on 0.25x speed... Either left or right the gathered step, he traveled. If you consider his left foot as a gathered step you, you count that as 0-1-2-3-4 but if you consider his right foot as gathered step thats 0-1-2-3.

Jordan Durant Kobe they all were elite in the post the fadeaway over either shoulder. Durant is especially good. It also gets teammates open shots and cuts for layups when defense turns their head or doubles. He has all the floaters and shots with diff footwork so he would be fun to watch in the mid range post. Pick and roll spread is great but being predictable makes it tough in playoffs. If I was that great I would want the ball all the time and go 1v1 and show off skills but you have to let others touch it more it makes them better on both ends. And really if they are gonna win title harden and Westbrook will both have to care about defense and give multiple efforts on defense and not have bad body language towards teammates when they or someone gets beat instead they need to just cover for them and take someone scoring as everyone’s fault. And they can’t focus on the refs or get into 1v1 battles that take focus off the game plan.

Maybe posting up isn´t as effective because we now know how to defend it? It´s now almost a muscle memory to double the post from the weak side, which was rarely done in the past. We also didn´t invite new post moves for a long time and maybe bigs know how to defend them better today. Posting up Harden could work for a quarter of a season but I´d think defenses would catch up pretty quickly.

well you dont see alot of guard posting up because they dont have the strength to do it. Getting good position in the post take alot of work too. Is there even proof that you save energy?

Jordan and Kobe played in the post and won titles this way. If Harden plays more in the post, then it's a certainty the Rockets will win it all. Jordan, Kobe and Harden are all guards - normally, posting is done through your bigs, Shaq, Duncan, Olajuwon (I may be missing some players/Hall Of Famers here, but you get the idea). I came up with this saying based on my observations of the past: "point guard driven teams always lose in the playoffs, you must go through your bigs who can play in the post. That's why it's called the *post-season*." I always dismissed guards because of their height and how the big man troubles the paint, but during the Warriors dynasty, we saw things a little different. Their runs were predicated on ball movement, spacing, pacing and 3-pointers. If post play is still a big deal, I would like to know the numbers behind post plays in playoffs. Is it volume, efficiency, guarding the post, or drawing fouls for free throws using the post. More importantly, from what position, the guards or the bigs. I would love to see you break down the importance of post play in the playoffs, Nick.

Nice video & analysis you got Coach Nick. I hope you should become the new head coach of Gilas Pilipinas & use your videos as an instrument on how the Filipino basketball players should become a very competitive & world class players, not amateurs or softies. 😉 P.S. Please make an analysis on the final match between Spain vs. Argentina on the recent 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Ben Simmons and Westbrook could probably post up like this and be successful. But I couldn't see shooters like curry and Harden post up

Mr.E Harden is bigger and stronger than most guards he’s built for it but he has to add it to his game

This is basically essential for Harden to use, because the shots will be easier for him to make at times when he is already tired. If he misses 2 or 3 three pointers in a row, he can just go down low and get easy buckets or easy 3s for his teammates. I think if he were to work on his post game just a little bit, then the perception of Harden disappearing in the playoffs would quickly change.

I hate the fact that the rockets play style now just doesn't have the mid range and long 2s part of their game It takes out a big part for options and threats to opposing defenses. I'd love to see your suggestion be added to the rockets' bag of tricks and plays

Morey: Posting up? Midrange? Whoooahhh!! Not happening, we're beyond that! D'Antoni: Yeah yeah, posting up sucks! you hear me Kobe and Melo? Harden: Don't need all of that. I already have two most unstoppable moves in all of regular season!
@Typerist5 жыл бұрын
its a good idea, but we all know he will iso 23 seconds and chuck up 3 pointers before the shot clock expire. Maybe an experiment with the post up can add more points of attack for harden

interesting idea. i do wonder if harden is tall enough to see / pass over taller defenders. compare to Jokic, for instance, who is able to pass out of post ups to anywhere on the court.

Love this video. Question for you. Should we as a basketball community re-describe the point guard position? How many teams point guards are primarily scoring with a wing actually initiating the offense? LeBron is going to be the primary ball handler, Draymond, Jokic, etc...
