According to French-Algerian philosopher Albert Camus, our world has no ultimate meaning, but if it had, it would be impossible to know it. It’s all pretty pointless as if the universe is nothing more than a cosmic coincidence, born without any specific goal or significance. For some, such a meaningless existence could lead to despair and even worse. So it seems that, for many, meaning is necessary to live; and without meaning, life is not worth living.

When I was in 8th grade, my classmates were all given copies of "Of Mice and Men". My teacher skipped my desk. When I went to her after she returned to her desk, she pulled a copy of Camus' "The Stranger" out of her drawer and handed it to me, saying, "I think this is more appropriate for you, Chris." It actually took awhile to understand why she was always giving me a separate curriculum from my classmates, but I understand now how big a favor she had done for me. Thank you, Ms. Camlet.

The point of existence… IS to EXIST. We each make our own “purpose” in life. I like to believe that the meaning of my life is to LEARN and to EXPERIENCE life. I rationalize this with our VERY FIRST action at birth. We were given senses… and ever since our birth, we have been using them to experience and learn.

Many believe the purpose of life is to LOVE. I used to believe this as well. But then I realized that there was something we had to do BEFORE: we achieved this philosophy... We have to LEARN to Love. This comes in many forms and means. Even still, we typically LEARN the concept of Love from our parents, family, peers, society and religion. All of this requires using our senses to experience and to learn.

I was once obsessed with thinking what others would think if I do this or that. So I chose to do nothing. I was surprised that didn't stop people from forming their opinions of me. In other words, inaction is still an action. Same with meaning. If life has no meaning, why not just attach it one for the sake of role-playing? It's kind of liberating if you think about it.

It premiered in 1999 as a spin-off of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and ended in 2004, but where Buffy was a teen drama whose monsters were subtext for growing up, Angel is a supernatural drama about a vampire with a soul, whose subtext is about alcoholism and Sisyphus. There's a YT Channel called "Passion of the Nerd" who makes great videos analyzing each episode and talking about how Camus' philosophy applies to each Choice the characters make, and what it can teach us about our own lives. A good video to start with is: "Why you should watch Angel", bc it may not be your flavor, or, sadly, it may not be available to you if you're overseas. As someone who went from theism to atheism, it was really difficult at first. I was taught that the meaning of life was to worship god (Allah). After realizing that there is no afterlife, it's like learning to walk again. Even though life has no ultimate meaning, it doesn't mean that there is no meaning. The physicist Sean Carroll said it's like painting. A great art is not made by coloring books, where you get the instructions on what to color and where. A great art is made by creativity, we can paint different paintings.

First of all there are thousands of personal testimonials about both near death experiences and also past life recollections that have a lot of evidence to back them up. Of course it's not definite 100% proof that there is something metaphysical about life and death, but it's enough that anyone who is truly honest about what they know and what they do not know would have to realize that no one truly knows one way or another about the exact precise nature of this universe, of life, and of death. We just don't know for sure. It's not intellectually honest to say you know for sure that there is absolutely no afterlife, absolutely nothing that continues after the death of the body. You want that to be the case, but what you want is different from being completely objective about what is known and what is unknown. The exact nature of consciousness and this infinite universe is not even fully understood to be able to say a definite statement like that. History is filled with people who were extremely confident and absolutely sure about things that they were incredibly wrong about. Agnosticism, which is simply saying we just can't know 100% for sure one way or the other is the only truly honest standpoint. Atheism is a biased and presumptuous one.

Once, many years ago, I had an Anthropology professor rather bring this to light, - for me anyway. He said to the class, something like this, 'You may believe anything or whatever suits you, but it does not - and it cannot mean that it is true'. With more classes in critical thought, I really began to wonder if I could ever really 'know' anything. This really began for me when I was 18 years old. I remember it so well. I eventually became very anxious as well as depressed because I just could not find a reason to live, - I know this sounds really crazy, but it eventually drove me to thoughts of suicide. Then of course I couldn't figure out how I was going to do it. 😐 This state of confusion and the anxiety that followed it ties I guess right in with Camus's Absurdism. That was a million years ago, and inspite - or despite, - all the learning and experience from just living, that truth has never changed. Once sitting in a group, the group leader looked at the floor and shook his head after one of our group stormed out. He simply said to the rest of us, that there was no such thing as 'Finding Yourself', - he said to us that, it was actually a matter of 'Creating Yourself'. I grew comfortable with the complete nonsense that life must be. I don't know what Biology was thinking with an unnecessary sophistication to our brains. Her requirements were pretty much intact already. Unless it's one of Her many 'mistakes'; - we all know how that invariably turns out. Learning is a classic bell-shaped curve, any authentic 'purpose' in life quickly descends the more you learn. But I suppose that with that comes a kind of resolve, or surrender. I guess I became more frightened, but much more excited at the same time. And why I am typing all this is probably because that 'absurdity' I still resist. If 'Meaning' is so critical to life, how can I discover or manufacture it, while all the while 'knowing' that it's entirely absent ? Eventually, even Albert Camus had to resign to, or design a Religion; a 'belief' system that allowed him to go-on living, even though he knew (or did he only believe) that it was meaningless, without real purpose, and Absurd.

I spend my days enjoying whatever happens and I spend a lot of time learning self mastery. Since I started studying Stoic philosophy (thanks to this awesome channel) I have been able to achieve a remarkable level of inner peace & equanimity. The stress, expectations, worries, etc. are all gone. I simply embrace whatever comes my way now, the concept of amor fati. Camus is right...life is absurd. And that's fine because it's the truth. And there's no logical reason to deny it. I see too many people deluding themselves with their religion, greed, egos, ambitions, etc. all the while foolishly believing in their "higher purpose". It's all so cynical & illogical, which is why I refuse to follow the crowd mentality but rather walk my own path in life. There is no meaning in life other than to just experience it & enjoy the finite time & simple pleasures we have on this Earth. And along the way, help others & be kind to people as best you can. I remember when I first figured out that if you look at the biggest imaginable picture life is pointless. It made me kind of depressed with a feeling of little to no self worth. By now I am fine again. I think when it comes to your purpose it's just to pick one. Whatever you wanna do or see in this world, do it or try your best to get there. I found purpose im vehicles, the looks the technology. I think I will dedicate my life to that it's rich in things to know especially when you get down into the details and you can make a living with cars. And one day when I am happy with what I have done I will end it or get ended before that, no choice in fate.

We need to eat so we don't have to eat again (in a couple hours) We buy things so we don't have the urge to buy things again (in a couple days) We work hard so we don't have to work again (retirement) We live so we don't have to live again. Our ultimate desire is to desire nothing, to put our mind at peace regardless what is happening around us. That's the ultimate purpose of living, and it's the same for all of us. We live life to learn all the required lessons so we will NOT NEED TO BE HERE AGAIN. We live for the evolution of our souls , to enter the realm/state of no birth and no death, the state of equilibrium, to be ONE again with the totality. We can learn that ultimate lesson by doing whatever we want to do in life, but following our heart/calling will yield the best return for this specific lifetime.

I think all meaning is subjective. Something that is profound to you may not feel the same to me. So having some cosmic meaning assigned to us won't work. I think the most meaningful thing I can do is be useful and supportive to the people around me. What I do won't matter in a hundred or thousand years, but it matters here and now to the people I love. That's enough meaning for me. We all have to figure out what matters to us individually.

I find it somewhat hillarious that despite being interested in philosophy I never troubled myself at all with existential questions. Basically always lived down to a T in accordance to what Camus described, acceptance of the lack of inherent meaning to life, this has always been natural to me. That doesnt really bring any relief or happiness by itself, its just one less thing to concern myself with. Funnier yet, Ive been living the seducer archetype as well, not in search of true love or a higher purpose, but enjoying this way of living devoid of anything else.

This is what novels and animes do for me. When I got the idea of how things really works, i have been filled with meaninglessness. That in this large planet earth, relatively we are only speck of dust to the entire universe. What is the meaning of all of this? But when I see my family living normal, happy life, I decided to disregard and hide that thoughts to myself. And thats where my imagination came in. When I discovered fiction years ago, I have been addicted to it. Characters living exciting lives, full of purpose. I envy them. I just want to get immersed in that world. My imagination. That I cant stop reading, sleepless nights. But then again, I realize, what my parents are working hard for. "My future". Then again, I feel bad for them. Despite my outer appearance that is focusing in my studies, happy life, Me myself have depended in alternate realities. Thats where I want myself to get away from that pit. And that is myself now, changing my habits, to live my life now, to repay my parents.And be a good citizen.

If life has no meaning that’s better than having meaning, because everyone will chase that meaning and life will become a competition. Having no meaning means enjoying and experiencing, which is fun.

One cannot live without attaching meaning to something. Having faith in their values and their philosophies means they attach meaning to this faith/way of life/pursuit. Even in the case of a man who lives his life in projecting the idea of meaningless life, that in itself is meaningful to him yet he does not realise it. However, meaning is not something you pursue. If you live your life truthfully, you will see meaning that is unique to you. This builds your character. Also, trying to live a life that is unique to you does not mean you need to let go of societal norms. The society created by all these rules and norms is simply a game you can choose to play. It can be fun but it can also be boring. If you find it boring then find some other game to play but don't lie to yourself. As long as you do what u truly feel, you r good.

Meaning does not exist in the world, we are the ones assigning meaning to things. Just like our thoughts it only exists inside our heads but is undeniably a real thing. Same goes for good/bad, pretty/ugly etc. We dont arbitrarily assign these judgments onto things though, we do it based on certain criteria. What judgement a thing will receive also depends on the person judging it, since we are all different. Something can only be valuable, good, pretty etc acording to someone. Some things willl be almost universally agreed on (puppies cute) because we are all human and our brains work similarly, other things will be more controversial because of our differences, still it's all subjective. Objectively, the world just is. It exists, works the way it does and things happen because of other things that happened prior. This includes us and by proxi our judgements of the world. They are just as real as everything else, but they are not internal characteristics of the things they judge, rather a reflection of our own nature.

@@mariostoynov But do our thoughts really affect our actions? Can you prove that true, without a shadow of a doubt? Do we even have thoughts? Are we even real? None of this can actually be proven. Many believe this is all an elaborate computer simulation. How would we know? To put it in a more realistic tone. I have ADHD, and there's certain things (done impulsivey) that no thought can stop me from doing. And in the same way. There's things that no thought could ever get me to do. And trust me I've tried. So that blows your theory right there. At least for me, and the millions of others that have the same condition as myself. My point is that you're trying to pin something down that can't be pinned down. Many things are agreed upon as real, and/or true by the majority of us. But none of that makes it true, or real. And I defy you to prove me wrong on this. The only certainly/reality is that nothing is certain, and nothing can be proven real. And the only real constant is change. Now that's "real"! Or is it? 🤔 🤣🤣🤣 ✌️

@@amb3cog Well, all of us are operating on the assumption that our senses and common sense tell us the truth. There is no way to prove this is actually the case I agree with that. However, if we can not trust our own mind and senses, what else can we trust? We simply have no other option, all information we have is acquired trough our senses, all information is processed with our mind. While there is the possibility it is all wrong that train of thought leads us nowhere. If our senses and mind give us a completely wrong picture then our choices might aswell be random. But that is only one possible scenario, it is still worth making informed, well thought out decisions just in case they actually are such. So under the assumption our senses and mind are mostly reliable I think it is reasonable to believe our thoughts exist despite being only in our head. Casting away that assumption, discussion of anything is basicly pointless, except perhaps for the enjoyment of discussion itself. Ps: I forgot to address the ADHD part. Just because the connection between thought and actions isn't always THOUGHT > CORRESPONDING ACTION doesn't mean there is no connection between them at all, you are ignoring all the cases where it actually does work that way. Just because there are exceptions doesn't mean that the general rule is entirely incorrect.

It is a shame he did not live today because the meaning of life has been solved by one man. Ex-physicist Thomas Campbell. For my entire life I have searched for the meaning of existence in all sorts of places - religion, philosophy, and science, but in all of them failed me as I found holes, gaps in them that left me feeling empty. Only Campbell's Big T.O.E (Theory of Everything) written in 2004 - has stood up to every scrutiny I could think of and thus transformed my life to one of genuine solid unbreakable meaning and purpose that is nothing to do with faith or religion. It works because it is the truth. Once you get it you have an awakening experience which I can only describe as your very DNA knowing it is the truth. That's how deep it goes. Campbell himself asks people to find flaws in his theory but as yet no one has. It is inevitable that his theory of existence will come to dominate the world but first it could tear the world apart in the same way as Martin Luther when he also gave the world a new truth. When you mess with people's beliefs it causes trouble but in the end truth is unstoppable.

For me knowing the truth of reality was vital because now I know why we all exist and what out purpose is. I want to be an active helper in helping the Larger Consciousness System rather than do nothing and chaos get the upper hand. But we all have free will and thus have a choice.

I agree with this point. (it's shockingly similar to my personal views anyways) Life indeed has no such Thing as a higher Purpose on Default. The only thing you can do, is to give a purpose to You and your Life. This of course is only going to work, if you have something in your Life that lives up to the Idea of this Concept. (at least in your own mind/opinion) When it comes to living however, i think you should be grateful for existing, by enjoying your life as much as you can, while you still can, for being alive is no matter to be taken for granted. It is a Gift and a Privilege that has been limited by Time, at the very Moment you've received it. You therefore own it to yourself to live your Life as YOU please and NOT as others do. (Except you have to harm People that didn't do anything to you. That's maybe going to lead you to your personal Happiness, but i definitely don't recommend anyone to live like that and if they still do, they deserve the Consequences that come with it.)
