Hearing that deep voice come out of June... it startled me and then it broke my heart. The forced “babyness” really shows through when you hear her real voice.

I love that the actresses are casted older. It makes June so mature and like she didnt get the chance to be a little girl because of Rose. I think the casting and this revival was just phenomenal.

The portrayal of June is really interesting. In most productions, when it comes to the moment of June blurting out her hatred for the act, most actresses would portray it lividly (which there is nothing wrong with as June is angry that her mother won't let her go further) but Leigh Ann Larkin had so much anger but she held it in, fighting to not let it out. That's what I like about this June. She is screaming inside but she has control over herself.

I adore Leigh Ann Larkin and find her one of the most underrated Broadway performers around. I saw her in both Gypsy and Night Music, and her voice is just stunning. I love how she really plays up June’s bitter frustration in this number too. In addition to finally dropping the mask and letting us see how June really feels about her career, she also injects a ton of humor into the scene. Laura Benanti is a goddess as well, but we all knew that already!
@MrJoseebus10 жыл бұрын
I'd give anything in this world to have a recording of the show I saw. It was the Friday night before the Sunday GYPSY closed. By this time Laura was saying "Smile, baby!" in a faux-LuPone accent like "Smile, baybaaay!" It was hysterical and the best memory ever.

Rose did many things and one things she did was have at least 3 birth certificates for each girl, so neither one knew exactly how old they were. (It didn't help that records weren't kept as well as they are now). It was said she eloped at 13 or 14. I think she might have been something like 16 or 17.

I really love their relationship, you can tell they really love each other and care for another even through all they've been through. They seem to be each other's rock and are holding each other together throughout the craziness Rose has put them through at such a young age.

The harmonies are SO great!
@janbrady42904 жыл бұрын
Harmonies are fairly simple in all songs in Gypsy as opposed to other Sondheim musicals where harmonies are just SO complex and HELLACIOUS. Like Sweeney Todd. (don't count the movie version at ALL) You have to have a perfect ear and have to be great at HARD harmonies.
@gregjohnson26143 жыл бұрын
You probably know this, but Sondheim didn’t write the music or harmonies for Gypsy, “only” the lyrics.

My problem is you can't view any musical theatre video on here without some misinformed person mentioning something about Wicked, as if that is the one thing that everything else must compare to. Gypsy has been around for almost 40 years longer than Wicked. I don't have a problem with either show, but there's honestly no comparison.

You know what, I think it is a fair comparison I don't know why people get so on their high horse. Its interesting to find how things kinda sorta relate to other things...OF COURSE Gypsy is a classic show and Wicked is relatively young as shows go, but still there are certainly similarities between the character of Glinda and the character of Baby June and the characters of the young Elphaba and the young Gypsy Rose Lee.I found your comment interesting.

I'm not sure why you're getting so many likes. You're being really rude to this person for no reason whatsoever. Their comparison was completely logical and not just "I LEIK WIKED". Get over it, Wicked's a great show with a large following. It will be mentioned. Get. Over. It. Don't lash out at someone for no reason.

Every time I watch this, I can't help thinking that even though Lauara Benanti's the bigger star, Leigh Ann Larkin does the better job here. Not only does she look like the real June Havoc, she's got some of her expressions and even her vocal mannerisms in here. If you've ever heard June Havoc on the Mexican Hayride album or seen pictures of her performing, you should be able to see what I mean. Larkin really does seem like she could be a young June Havoc. Maybe Benanti showed more of the real Gypsy Rose Lee in the later scenes, but Larkin is more like the real June here.

While I do admit I was a bit unnecessarily hostile (I stumbled across this today and honestly don't remember replying to it), I do stand by the comment that Wicked seems to be thrown around a lot whenever someone wants to seem like a true musical theatre "fan". I think of it in the same vein as people commenting on videos of musical theatre songs that were featured on Glee. They have no other frame of reference other than that one show and usually don't venture to discover where it came from.

It has nothing to do with snobbery. But we all know that every few years, shows come around that seem to become THE show that you MUST like if you like or participate in musical theatre. And honestly, those are the musicals that I end up not really wanting to have anything to do with, after hearing someone mention it for the millionth time, even on videos that it has nothing to do with. There are other things out there that people can enjoy. Why does everything have to be like Wicked?

There is big a difference between selling your 'detached' character and just being a detached actress. Obviously June is 'over it'. Thank you for pointing out the obvious. I only made that comment because I've now seen her in 2 completely different roles where I've felt she was detached.
