Breath of the Wild isn't the first Zelda game to feature Breakable weapons/shields. In OoT, Deku Sticks are breakable (though you can use a broken Deku Stick as a weapon via the ledge grab trick) and then there is the Giant's Knife which is basically a breakable version of the Biggoron Sword (which is ironically unbreakable in OoT but breakable in BotW) though you can use the broken Giant's Knife as a weapon (without the use of any glitches or tricks). Then in Majora's Mask, Deku Sticks return, and the cool looking Razor Sword is breakable though it reverts back to the Kokiri Sword if it does, unless the Razor Sword is forged into the unbreakable Gilded Sword using Gold Dust. In Twilight Princess, NPCs have to deal with breakable weapons too, as shown when Link finds his old Wooden Sword which he gave to Talo broken (using its remains to get Talo's scent allowing him to track him as Wolf Link). Oh and don't get me started on Shields. Too Late! In OoT, the Deku Shield is flameable and will burn if struck by fire elemental enemies like Fire Keese. In TP, the Ordon Shield is also flamable and of it burns it can't be replaced (as the Ordon Shield is one of a kind) though Link can purchase another flamable Wooden Shield or save the Ordon Shield by investing in and switching permanently to the Hylian Shield). In Skyward Sword, every shield that isn't the Hylian Shield is breakable, though they can be repaired by the Blacksmith in Skyloft or using certain Potions, and the Sacred Shield as well as its upgrades which includes the Goddess Shield can repair themselves over time.
@RaphBlade73 жыл бұрын
Also the Master Sword enters its stronger glowing "True Master Sword" (as I like to call it) state when in the presence of Ganon, Ganon corrupted Guardians (as the uncorrupted Guardian Scouts in Shrines do not trigger it), Ganon's Blights, and Cursed enemies revived by Malice. Heck, in Hyrule Castle, the Master Sword is permanently in its True Master Sword state while within the Hyrule Castle dungeon map due to Ganon's Malice permeating the place.

Botw is the best Zelda game because it's not like the other Zelda's. I hate the other Zelda's because the follow the same story beats, the same gameplay routine as every game. Oh link wakes up, he somehow gets thrown into a situation that forces him to go to multiple temples, get the master sword or some variation of it, and then you gotta kill an evil dude and save a girl. Like wow, thanks guys. I've stopped playing Zelda games since wind waker due to this. They all started to feel the same, no matter how different they were. They all followed those beats from what I can tell.

You know what’s a better way to encourage people to use different weapons than having them break like they were made of glass? Having different enemies require different weapons and tactics.
@ahdhwjdue83623 жыл бұрын
And attaching various different attack mechanics to the weapons themselves that match with stats Halo has been doing this for ages. For example a great sword being abit slow but packing alot of damage and perhaps stuns enemies Regular sword being balance between medium damage and fairly good speed Dagger having slightly poor damage but great attack speed allowing you to get alot of hits in fast to make up for it.
@samwiseb27993 жыл бұрын
I always hated that argument “it forces you to try out different weapons” Yeah and the “filler and padding” that people hated in Skyward Sword forces you to try out different gameplay but no one uses that as an argument. If a game “forces you” to do anything it’s not really good game design or gameplay because you shouldn’t be forcing your player to do anything. Isn’t that the whole damn point of “go anywhere and do whatever you want” in BOTW? Like people should be allowed to use whatever weapon they want and be happy with the gameplay structure you want. The whole “it forces you to try out different weapons/gameplay” is an idiotic argument because it’s not good gameplay because it doesn’t encourage the player to try out different things but rather pigeonholes them into being forced to try out different strategies. Instead of making enemies puzzle like and fun with their own unique strategies it forces combat and puzzle solving to be a shit tier paper Mario sticker star system where you are forced to gather weapons for the sake of gathering weapons but ideally not choosing to fight is the better solution. It’s the exact same flaw as sticker star but because bOTW is treated like the golden child of gaming because “it’s open world and you can do what you want and explore everything” somehow weapon durability is perfectly fine because reasons!
@grimms87833 жыл бұрын
I think BoTW can get away with it more easily is because the system is not as bad as Sticker Star's as well as the game itself being entertaining besides that. A major part of Paper Mario games after all is the turn based battles, that's sort of the whole point, while BoTW's, like you said, is more about exploring. That and charging head first into fights and breaking weapons isn't the only option the game presents the player with in terms of fighting enemies. Do I think the durability system is good and should be excused though? Not really, but at the same time I don't think it drags down the rest of the game. Possible ways they could change the idea of trying out new weapons is having the main weapon types of one-handed, two-handed and spear, but add more sub-variations with unique traits, as well as giving each of the weapon types and sub-variations mentioned more advantages and disadvantages to them. This way while each type of weapon has a general feel, certain weapons within these type carry things the player can learn about them. Sadly the game already tries to do this but doesn't go all in, like blunt weapons doing more damage to the talus enemies and breaking rocks faster, flame blades keeping you warm and cold blades keeping you cool, certain bows being able to be drawn faster or shoot further, boomerangs and lizal weapons coming back after being thrown, etc.

Indeed that is a terrible argument. This is one of the reason I stopped my BOTW playthrough right now. This mechanic also drove me bugshit in Dying Light. How about climbing picks, you know, the same ones designed to chip into rock and hold more than a single persons weight. Nah, same thing, zombie skulls damage climbing picks too. That shit really broke the games immersion for me. To make things worse, the firearms didn't need maintenance for whatever reason.

At least with Fire Emblem, you get 15 to 45 whacks with the pointy stick, and you see exactly how much you have left. A sword that was used against heavy armor a few dozen times may actually break, bend, or blunt to the point of uselessness. A supply of good weapons can make or break a sword-and-shield army. Still doesn't explain how I break a generations old magical sword against a 90% naked Dancer. Still doesn't explain the god-awful random breakage mechanic in other games, that can result in top-tier weapons shattering in a single use. Bad place for RNG if you aren't willing to code a base minimum item health. Very easy to design very poorly.

I don't mind it but I wish they were a bit more durable, it does encourage using different tactics with your abilities instead of just running in and slashing everyone but them breaking too often means you're just going through menus to pick another. What they should've done is make it about weapon maintenance instead and have you use resources to repair damaged weapons (different resources for different weapons) outside of battle (akin to cooking) and increase the number of hits it takes to break them while gradually making them weaker with each hit.
