You know... Thinking about it, Robotnik and Bowser switching places sorta makes sense. Mario is a human, and him fighting a guy who is using robots he built to fight makes sense. Mario needing things like capes, and powerups would make sense to compete with the robots Robotnik makes. As for Sonic, he's up against a guy he can't beat with speed alone. A super fast and super strong hedgehog up against a powerhouse with an absolute defense kinda makes sense as an archvillain.

@@Lunarcreeper I believe they're meant to grow tails as they get older and stronger in folklore, and nine is the biggest number one of them can have, or has at least managed to get, that I'm aware of. If you want another one, Blaze may be inspired by a nekomata, a cat monster that's strongly connected with fires appearing with it or being able to manipulate fire. I say 'may' because that's not confirmed, though there's the reasoning for it.

Mario couldve just jumped on Robotnik's head since it's roofless, and Sonic could've Spin dashed or Momentum Spinned into Bowser's Feet while he was facing toward him, or spin jumped into Bowser's Belly, and Mario about spin jumping on that robot that wanted to die.

Regarding Sonic, this is probably the one time Bowser actually used his head in a practical way, he was waiting for Sonic to move. Still doesn't make much sense given Sonic is literally faster than sound, but apparently Bowser has the reaction time of a coked up Warzone TTV streamer and can anticipate exactly when Sonic will move so as to perfectly time Sonic throwing himself into his back. But to Sonic's credit, at least in the sonic games I've played, Sonic's always jumped first and then threw himself into Robotnik. But that's still odd given that Sonic has dashed himself into several enemies before...
